ELDER71'S PROFILE
Elder71

Hi, I'm Stephen, lead designer of OMNIS - The Erias Line.
Aspiring game-dev, societal drop-out, coffee drinker, chain vaper. Pixel tweaker. Location maker. Character dreamer-upper.
Also a part-time Parallax Mapper available on commission.
(contact me re: commissions at elder71@hotmail.co.uk)
ALSO - I like reviewing games. If you're looking to get your game fairly reviewed with constructive criticism/feedback, PM me or email me or otherwise contact me telepathically. My messenger-pigeon service is out of order following an unfortunate incident that involved a jumbo-jet engine.
Cheers,
S.E

author=Dragnflyauthor=Elder71On that note, not counting personal preference is there anything... linguistically technical in the book. By that I mean anything that would make an audio version less impactful? And just to re-state, I don't mean an opinion of which would be better. I mean like are there key illustrations or anything that require a visual medium?
I would repeat the recommendation to read House of Leaves. You should pick up a copy straight away and get lost in it - reading it won't spoil anything for this game, I'm 'inspired by' rather than 'based on', if you get me.
I would say so, yes. Large portions of the text are laid out in very unusual, specific ways, which is one huge piece of the House of Leaves experience.

Large parts of it are in languages other than English too - I only read/speak English so I didn't go through those passages, but their simple presence adds something to the atmosphere of the book that would be lost if they were cut from an audio version.
In summary, it's a very visual book and plays with space. An audio version would be possible, I think, but not without a very complex and risky edit.
So, apparently, 650+ events on a map can cause SOME LAG

Which engine?
VX Ace. They're all Player Touch, Transfer Player (using variables).
The map is also about 150x90
I cannot believe that I didn't anticipate lag. I was getting carried away with a puzzle idea.

I haven't read "House of Leaves", but I've been told to. I'm not going to until I've played this already wonderful looking game. I can't wait to get my teeth sunk into it! This is very much my kinda game! Good luck and hope to see it soon!

That's unfortunate! I could recommend places to get sound effects I think, but that doesn't sound like your problem.
I hope it gets worked out by the end!
Yeah, fingers crossed. There's a chance that I may be over-thinking the problem - OR that I haven't yet thought about it enough.
Time will tell :)

It feels better to deftly overcome an issue than bluntly work around it, eh? Agreed. To me working around an issue is only fun if you do it in a crafty fashion.
I'd offer to make your sounds for you but my good mic is about 6000km away. I could try my not-so-good mic and just see what type of quality it does. I've never actually used this thing for anything but Skyping with family and that doesn't count.
It's a very generous offer. I'll bear it in mind if that's okay, I'm not approaching this project with too much organisation so if we do work together I want to have things (i.e. my ideas) in proper order first and avoid mucking you around

My advice with the sound effects is to decide early on how feasible it is to make your own. If you do go that route then use exclusively your own because people can tell if there's a change in source. I mixed and matched on an old project and the game was literally laughed at because of how obviously some things didn't fit. Anyway, that's me trying to help. Good luck.
Thanks for the pointer. The problem is (well, ONE of the problems) that I don't have any ability or know-how when it comes to generating my own sounds. I tend to stick to Free SFX for my imported SEs, and try as hard as I can to only pick ones that fit.
In these early stages, I've still got the option of redesigning certain things to get around the problem, but that feels like a cop out to me.

Thought I'd post this in case anyone would be interested in taking a look at how the visuals are shaping up. I won't do this too often though, lest all the game's creepy things be 'spoiled'.

Woman in blue nightgown takes a shuiken to the face and falls into pit trap outside blue ninja star dealership. Dealership owner, who is a midget couldn't get there in time before two people with awesome 1980's handlebar mustaches share a big mug of beer and discuss the terrible happenings and how the world is going to hell when even a shuriken dealership isn't safe.
For a serious guess, woman dies while she was pregnant. Ghost baby is angry. Two people are frowning because they didn't like what happened.
I can't see anything but handlebar mustaches now!
Y'know, so, that's kinda got to be what the explanation is :)

You're welcome! ^_^ This, your avatar with a figure in a door, and the picture of the hand are all very creepy and make me excited for the game.
I'm working very hard and doing my best :)
