ELDER71'S PROFILE

Hi, I'm Stephen, lead designer of OMNIS - The Erias Line.

Aspiring game-dev, societal drop-out, coffee drinker, chain vaper. Pixel tweaker. Location maker. Character dreamer-upper.

Also a part-time Parallax Mapper available on commission.
(contact me re: commissions at elder71@hotmail.co.uk)

ALSO - I like reviewing games. If you're looking to get your game fairly reviewed with constructive criticism/feedback, PM me or email me or otherwise contact me telepathically. My messenger-pigeon service is out of order following an unfortunate incident that involved a jumbo-jet engine.

Cheers,

@Frogge Silly frogge, your paragraph is good, but you didn't basically say "jumpscares are stupid"!

I will disagree that rm is limited in how scary it can be. If anything, its limitations encourage creative/varied scares.

I think that that's the root thesis of the experiment I'm running. To see how unsettling/scary I can make a game with sprites, tilesets and a low resolution. So far, my impression is that it's just about understanding what will and won't work with such limitations in place, and taking as much advantage as I can of what (hopefully) will work.

Love the graphic style! Great choice.
To be honest, the priority was on creating tilesets quickly, so I'm doubly delighted that the look has come out so well!

When this project first came about it was just going to be RTP only and made in a day. But I've done my usual trick of getting heavily invested, so one day's development time has turned into two months!

I think it served you well. Many people forget that the simplicity (well played, that is) makes best games. I personally, find the style you used simply alluring, saw it only in a few games, but it works well, especially if you want to focus on story more.

Maybe I am too old, and that's why, but I just don't buy all those perfect-graphics games. Simplicity is not bad, its better than people think, and you really did a great job here. Just keep it up!

I agree. In my opinion, if games could be good PS1 era, they can still be good without super-HD graphics and every pore and hair follicle rendered on the characters' faces.

I'm still working on fine-tuning my approach to the story, trying not to overload it with any one thing. So - while I wouldn't guarantee that I'm gonna get it right - rest assured that a lot of care and attention is going into the script.

I hope this game does really well, but at least if it does happened to botch then people can call it "The Allison Durr".

I'd happily join them!

This looks so gorgeous. Lovin' it.

I was worried that it looked a bit basic, but the main idea for this project is to finish it quickly, so I won't be devoting weeks/months to parallax mapping like I did with Omnis.

Piles of cardboard boxes block the path. It'd be easy to just shove some out of the way but Snake could be in any of them and you don't want to blow his cover.

Well, of course. If you inspect one of the boxes, you can overhear snippets of his conversation with Otacon. He's whispering, of course.

The hand is also animated in a basic way - it 'grabs' for you.

I'm trying to use a lot of symbolism without it being too crude or confusing, so we'll see how that turns out!

I want to add: the maps won't be this 'empty' when I'm finished, I haven't got around to creating many background details quite yet.

Nice looking sprites. I'll see where this goes.

I didn't want to spend hours and hours on them, but I guess I've picked up enough pixeling skill to do them quickly and not make them look horrible :)

Looking foward for this project! <3

Stay tuned!

Looks like really interesting project. I also appreciate zero jumpscares and horror atmosphere instead idea. Good luck with everything! :D

I have a visceral dislike of jump scares - and not in the 'I enjoy jump-scare horror' sort of way. Atmosphere is obviously a much harder thing to do and do right, but that's the whole point of the challenge I've set myself.

PS - All: I have some 'monster' sprites done, but I'm reluctant to reveal them before there's a download for the game. But if folks really want to see them, I could make a blog post showcasing some designs?

Horror game? By the creator of Omnis? I'll take two please.

:)

This is my first attempt at actually putting 'horror ideas' into practice, so I've got my fingers crossed that everything comes together nicely!

I guessed it was influenced by House of Leaves immediately with the blue text but of course appropriating ideas from different mediums can lead to interesting outcomes. Sounds promising!

With my last project ('Omnis'), taking things so seriously with fundraising and marketing and all that jazz took a lot of the 'creative spirit' out of game making.

So I'm making this purely for the fun of it, without worrying about anything :)

Depending on the time you do the live spriting, I would be interested :^D!

As for the artwork, it's pretty rad! I like it a lot.

Thank you, I was blown away by it.

re: the spriting - yeah, timing is an issue with such a global community. I suppose I'd have to research a time that suited the most people. Thanks for the encouragement though, I'll definitely look into it now!
