50 Days of Representation

I just realized I have no idea how to use certain REFMAP town tilesets I've downloaded for this project, and I can't find examples anywhere. Gosh darnit.

I guess I gotta look harder.

This is looking sweet! Can't even tell it's RM2K3.

50 Days of Representation

I finished the first intro cutscene, now I need to do a little tutorial section. The problem there is I'm lazy.

Frogge, that looks sweet! By the way, I'm using some of your Refmap edits on my jam entry <3

Thing is, I'm doing things in a "non-linear" fashion, as in not exactly building things in the order they will show up, and now I've realized that, depending on what I learn as I continue making stuff, I may need to throw away a lot of what I've already done. A shame.

I love this! You can't forget the helpful doggo <3
Doggo's mostly going to be a support character with one or two hard hitting attacks, so yeah, VERY helpful Doggo.

I'm torn between wanting to use ATB for some extra granularity in the combat (Differing Turn orders, being able to play with ATB gagues with skills), and going pure turn based (Simpler to manage boss patterns in a puzzle-like manner, easier to handle battle events, etc)

Other than that, I have the basic design skeleton for the combat done, got all my faces and stuff for my trio of humans.

If I were you, I'd go for ATB. It just feels more organic that way, and speed is an actually useful stat.

EDIT: I am terrible at time management. I spent the entire first week of the jam focusing on details instead of big picture stuff. Stupid, silly details that most people might never find because they are associated with optional content. I know making optional content is kind of silly when I have such a short time to work, but I just feel like a lack of optional stuff would make the game feel a bit... thin, given how little in the way of deep mechanics it offers.

Scapped my initial idea. Too big. I'm going back to my roots.

Going back to my original RPGmaker setting, going back to that vaguely formed "Dragon Hunt" story I had, going back to the idea of just 3 dungeons with little story beats in between, with my old battle system.

Yeah, this seems more doable in about....oh god 3 weeks? *mild panicking noises*

But hey, by thinking along more diverse lines, my characters now seem more interesting, or at least have inherent reason to be traveling together for this.

Went from "an old man, wanting to go out in a vengeful blaze of glory, and a pack of other people with little in the way of story because they can be swapped out to make the game more replayable, story be damned" to "The lady seeking vengeance on the dragon, plus her highly supportive girlfriend, their dog, and what amounts to basically a dragon scholar".

50 Days of Representation

I don't know. I can respect it if the event would rather focus on marginalized voices talking about their own experience, because as a straight white upper middle class dude, I do not have first hand experience on what opressed groups go through, and it'd be insensitive of me to pretend that I do. If that is the case, I'll still make my game, but I'll release it outside the jam.

However, if it's still okay to participate, I'll try my best to make something good to support the causes without pretending I know things I couldn't possibly have lived through. Incindentally, that's why the story is told from the perspective of the matchmaker, not the single people.

50 Days of Representation

Wait... I'm a straight white dude myself. I thought it was okay as long as we were making games about marginalized groups (in a non-patronizing way, of course)... isn't it okay?

I guess I should share my idea with you guys, maybe it will help undecided people come up with ideas of their own.

So, my main character is an expert "matchmaker", her specialty is bringing people together and forming romantic couples. She gets called to a beautiful tropical island to help form couples between the island's youth. There are four guys and four girls in the island, and the chief is adamant that you only pair guys with girls and vice-versa.

However, as the matchmaker explores the island and discovers the preferences and feelings of the young singles, she realizes it is impossible to make everyone happy unless the chief allows two gay couples (two guys, and two girls) to be together, and then she has to convince the chief to let go of his preconcieved notions of how love should work so they can all be happy.

At first, I intended to make it sad and sober, but then I realized it would work better if I made it mostly upbeat and funny with a few sad moments here and there.
