JADEN'S PROFILE

I'm an indie game designer, currently working on my first major project, simply titled "Secrets of Kankara" (or SoK, if you prefer).
I use RPG Maker VX Ace, and have been toying with multiple RPG Makers for a number of years (since roughly 2003). I have also worked with Game Maker, although my primary focus right now is VX Ace.

So I can't get past twelve minutes in due to lame stealth mechanics. The guard by the lantern chest always spots me. If I try to hide in a dark corner, he spots me. If I get too close, he spots me even with his back turned. If I try to keep my distance, he'll turn around and come back as I loot the chest. He seriously caught me RIGHT AFTER the dialog box closed the first time.

Also, the chest doesn't reset after the guard took the lantern from me and threw me back into the dungeon.

Speaking of that, a bit of a flaw in logic: The villain seals the princess in crystal for getting in his way, but only throws the hero into the dungeon. The dungeon cell with a hole in the wall and an open door. And the guard has his back turned and also, apparently, isn't carrying a sword. Putting the hero in one of the other cells and having him find a way to open the door would make it, well, less dumb on the villain's part.

I do want to say that the (brief) combat segment I got to experience was good. The keyboard controls take a bit to get used to, but work quite well. The maps are pretty good, the music is good, the animations are good... It's just that the mandatory stealth segment really drags it down. I'm sure I'd love the rest of the game if I could play it. But I went in expecting Zelda-esque action (which the game does well), but then got thrown into a stealth game. Kind of a reverse Deus Ex: Human Revolution there.
Ouh. Yeah. I actually ran into that problem, but only because I tried to get past the guard, ignoring the chest. You basically have to keep a 2-tile-distance from him while his back is turned, grab the chest ASAP, and run the other way. It worked for me. Notice that you can save anywhere anytime also (In that case, right before you enter, If you'd consider retrying).

That is really the only stealth segment in the game, which serves more as a prologue, which is why I didn't mention it in review ^^' sorry for that.

I also want to say: I did not experience the scrolling glitch. Which is strange, since I'm accustomed to weird glitches because I have Windows 8, the OS that hates everything older than itself.

Well, I must admit I am using Windows XP (because I'm stubborn like that). Good that it didn't happen to you :)

It may just be from an older graphics card, though I'm not sure how it would only freeze that one room lol. I run Win7 personally, but I'll see if I can run in XP compatibility mode later and see if that triggers the screen glitch.

Edit: I just ran it in compatibility mode for XP (SP 3), and nothing froze. It may just be hardware related, but I can't be sure, myself.

Also, a tip on that guard; you have to follow at just the right distance to get in and out with enough space between you both, it can be difficult, but definitely possible. ;)
Which would be fine if I went in expecting a Metal Gear Solid or Deus Ex-like stealth game with combat, but nothing suggests that. So my main issue is that it's an entirely different game genre than I went in expecting, and that rubs me the wrong way. Similar to Deus Ex: Human Revolution promising stealth and subterfuge, then throwing DOOM/Halo bosses at you in mandatory combat. It's not the inclusion that's the problem as much as the sudden shift, combined with the demanded precision, that's the problem.

I also want to say: I did not experience the scrolling glitch. Which is strange, since I'm accustomed to weird glitches because I have Windows 8, the OS that hates everything older than itself.

I understand, I will endeavor to outline the necessity in this section of the game to sneak around (though it's pretty much going to be the only section that does it that way). I hope you will try the demo again, or if you'd prefer to wait for final release to try to full game. Thank you again for the feedback, it helps me to enhance the game and to make adjustments to suit a wide range of players, as well as fix some issues.

I'll look into that bug as well, I thought I fixed that months ago (guess not), thank you for mentioning it.

Also, you make a very good point about the dungeon cell, I think I'll redesign that part with a door or something, I never felt too satisfied with that part anyway.
Thank you for trying the demo.

The RMN Short-Trip - Episode 1 - The Secrets of Kankara; Action-Adventure by Jaden
Subseries of The RMN Journey

Hello, Krolan here. I got bored again. So I searched the most recent entries and found...

A non-standard Opening Screen is rare and therefore admired

Well, no time to waste. This is a Demo of a Work in Progress.

Story - Evil never dies

The Story features some old stuff and his grandson. I think. They're at home minding their own buisness, until...

Umm... Zelda... wrong game. You were supposed to bother a dude named Link over at Hyrule... oh... no? He's sleeping you say?... allright then.

It kinda reminds me of the classic Final Fantasy. Go gather crystals, because some evil dude wants to use it for himself. Seriously, why even bother to create those crystals if all they do is sit there until some bad dude wants to get them and so a good dude has to gather them beforehand. Maan...

Ok, I'm being unfair here. The Story is obviously unfinished yet and it has its own identity. I just wasn't able to extract it. There is a little Exposition Talk which shows that there is more to it than that.

Gameplay - You sure your name isn't Link?

Like in Zelda the Grandfather here tells you to stay home while he handles the problem, unlike in Zelda he has common sense and realizes his fragile bone-structure after you convince him that he is slow as slug. He tells you that you'll have to find your own sword, so you take your lantern and march into the evil castle to save a princess.

At first you're just sneaking up to the barracks and beating a Guard unconscious. Soon enough you find a sword (which you steal from another unconscious guard... why you didn't loot the first one is beyond me..). But now the gameplay really shows what it is about. You can strike your enemies with your sword, you also can do a few combos.

You lose your sword and find another Sword, one with magic propertys. You walk around and destroy bushes to get gems and other Items, like Bombs...

...search for Keys,...

...fight Enemies...

...and Bosses...

...solve Riddles...

...and craft Items.

A solid representation of what we can anticipate. I really look forward to it, a shame that it will take a while til it is done.

Regarding Graphics in this ~2hour Demo we have an enchanted-ish calm atmosphere, which is reinforced by occasional rain, a time-system (with effect on NPC's) and water effects. Not to forget: an awesome sword-move!

Items - Bombs that go Boom and the Bumarang of Doom

This Demo shows a simple but effective Item System with 5 equipable slots which are additionaly shown at the top right corner. It shows Sword, Shield, Armor, Accessories and the special Item (Bombs, Bumarang, etc.) The Sword is used with the Action Key, the Special Item with the Shift key, or with an Xbox360-Controller respectively A and X. We find the classic selection here, like the grappling Hook...

Sword, Bomb and Boomerang have all a rather decent attack radius, so hit detection is a non-issue.

Everyone who loves Zelda will also love this game.
Don't mistake this for a clone though. As said, the game has its own identity and the system in implemented flawlessly.

But the download is not only worth it because of those implementations, it is also worth it because of the Music. A mostly MP3-Selection can be found in the BGM folder. Hell, the download would even be worth it if it was only for the BGM. Some scores will let the heart of those who love tactical-strategy-RPGs beat faster.

Definetly a game of much potential that will hopefully blossom to all our enjoyment :)

The Demo is about 2 hours long, perfect for a short evening. If you are at all interested, give it a try! It's not a difficult demo, probably so anybody can try everything out.

Bugs - Those ugly little pests

No Bugs remotely worth mentioning, certainly nothing that will affect the gaming experience in any way. However, there is one I stumbled upon, I don't know if this is an issue with the game or on my side, but I'll present the workaround.

If the picture stops moving exactly here

Then know this:
Your game is still running. You still can move. If you move to the left far enough you will notice the picture moving again. Don't loose heart, it will be over very soon. Just keep going to the right (keep slashing your sword also, from this point there are 2 guards left) until you hit a wall (just walk right for about 5 seconds) and then go up. After 1 or 2 seconds you should be in another room and the picture is back moving again. Except for this one room you will never meet such an issue again.

However, you have to return to this room 2 more times shortly there after. This time no enemies and the same rules as before apply. So the second time, just go right and then up again. The third time you come actually from the right and will most likely have the blackscreen from the transion. Just walk left to the point where the picture starts moving again.

Anyways, Great Demo, I'll wait impatiently (:P) for the continuation :)

Thank you for trying my game, I certainly enjoyed the review that you wrote and am glad you liked the experience.
I'm unsure what is occurring in that room that froze the screen for you, primary testing hasn't yielded anything, but I'll continue looking into it and check possible causes.

If anyone else runs into the bug mentioned, please do let me know, just by knowing how often this bug occurs (and where) I can trace commonplace events to that location and see if any of them are causing it somehow. Though it's kind of odd that it only happens in that spot lol. Thanks again for mentioning this :)

@Kiana:
Yeah, I apologize for the large file size, that's mostly just default sounds that take up a ridiculous amount of space, but don't worry, the final version of the game won't have all of that because I'll be going through and deleting unused sounds (which I should probably do sooner rather than later).

Offering Detailed Game Reviews (by flap)

Hey flap, just letting you know I added my game to this site as well, so if you wanted to post the review here too, you could. The game page is http://rpgmaker.net/games/7099/

Looking forward to reading it, I've been on break so when it's done I can fix the not-so-great stuff lol.
