Actually, it probably has a lot less to do with being faithful to the original, and more to do with doing what they know works. They've been pushing out games with the Kingdom Hearts style of combat for a while now, and I assume have gotten positive results for it, so it's clear that's what they want to do now. As a company, it doesn't make sense for them to go back to turn based, when a majority of the staff is now trained for third person action gameplay. Sucks for people who just want the original game updated, but it's hardly unexpected.

Now Barret with sunglasses. THAT'S sinful.

Wearing sunglasses everywhere is Rude's shtick. Why they gotta front on his turf?

The big plot twist: Barret steals Rude's sunglasses, and proceeds to wear them for the rest of the game, no matter the time, weather, or location.

No, he's just upset that they've changed it a bit.

Geez, obviously it was never going to be the same game. Getting all in a huff about it is just silly. I'm going to get it and enjoy the fuck out of it despite the changes because I want to see how they upgrade things and what stays the same. An improved script, for one. Graphical changes for another. I'm looking forward to what they do with the gameplay - it was never going to be the same battle system and if you expected that then you're very silly.

Because when they said something new, I expected something new, not porting over the shitty action battle system they've been using since kingdom hearts while the Mana Series who does its job 100000 times better (gameplay wise anyway, kingdom hearts is a cute franchise) remains dead.
And who says it's the same battle system? 2 seconds of video and speculations. That's nothing to judge on. Besides, even if they showed longer portions of a battle system, just remember what happened to FFXIII's battle system. They showed off really cool images of it and everyone clamoured about how cool it was gonna be but the end product was quite different. What they show now is very much likely to change from what we get. Don't start getting depressed about it until the damn game is out, at least. :/
Early days yet.

I think my favorite part of the trailer was

Jet Black doing the voice of Barrett

But yea, an action RPG will be cool! The battles in FF7 weren't the memorable part of the game, for me. Planning your team with Materia was fun, but I'm sure they're going to have that for the remake too, considering how integral it is to the plot!

Yeah, honestly, as a person who enjoyed the story/atmosphere/world more I'm a lot more worried about those being changed up than I am about the battle system being kind of wonky. I've sat through battle systems I didn't enjoy before, but I'm sure it won't be that bad.

It's now being reported that the remake will be episodic.

If that's true, then that's really interesting. I could see how it could be reasonably broken down into episodes, but, each episode being a "unique experience"? Hmm. I suppose that increases the chances of it being ported to PC at all or in a timely fashion, so that's good.

Anyways everyone, please continue to yell and scream about how this will ruin everything.

it certainly does nothing to assuage my concerns that this is a naked cash grab. Why make you buy one game when they can make you buy six?
Probably the only way for SE's high rollers to get something out without missing another console generation

An episodic set up makes a lot of sense for this game. With each release, FF games have been getting more graphically intense, but they've also been getting smaller - less unique areas, etc. FF7 could be huge because of the clever stylized shortcuts they took, like using pre-rendered backgrounds.

Five years ago Square-Enix was saying that an FF7 remake would take over ten years to make, if they did it in the style of FF13. Splitting it up makes sense - it's probably going to be an enormous game.

I am wondering how they're going to keep things exciting after Midgar, though. When you start chasing Sephiroth halfway around the world, the original slows down a lot. But, with what they've shown so far, it looks like they're really on-board with totally re-envisioning the game, so they probably have solutions in mind. It's already a cash grab - they're capitalizing on something they know people will buy. Same with any IP, right? - just look at half the Zelda games out there. I'd way rather have a totally new look at the story and action over the same exact game with newer models.
Their estimate is correct because SE has proven themselves to be wholly incompetent in HD AAA game development. They're making improvements like learning to use a third party engine instead of trying to make their own (see CrystalTools or w/e the ff13 engine was called e: nevermind the brain drain they experienced like Yoshihisa Hashimoto leaving /e:), or getting people who can get the job done to take over struggling projects like FF14 and FF13v/FF15 but it's a long uphill battle to get back even halfway to where they were at the start of the last console generation.

They did greenlit Nier 2 so I have some hope that they're digging their head out of their asses.
okay seriously what is everyone's issue with barrett's sunglasses they look fantastic on him

It looks cool to me. But that's probably because I have no feelings about it because I've never played the original. I hope it's a good game.

Edit: If it's anything like Crisis Core it'll be entertaining but repetitious. Which isn't such a huge a sin in my book; only a small one. I guess it's scary for everyone because it's their beloved series... meanwhile I'm just here missing out on the bitter nostalgic disappointment.
