I'm super excited to try this labor of love, but some of the assigned controls don't work and I haven't been able to see anything related in the FAQ or elsewhere. None of the keyboard buttons work for Up or Left, and the controller is just unresponsive. I'm on Windows 10 Intel, it's patched to 1.0.7 Intel version, I have a generic controller, and I've tried the kbdreset and Cherry's input configurator to no avail. Suggestions?

Yeah I can't say I've seen this before. I know it sounds generic but try restarting your PC with the controller unplugged. Or if you have Steam installed try running a Steam game first, close it, and then try using it for DQ+. This is an older program so controller issues are really difficult to troubleshoot.

Whats with all the different versions? Should I just download the newest one?

There's only 2 versions, the other files are patches and most patches are deprecated or no longer needed.

If you have an Intel CPU just download the Intel Base game and the 1.0.7 patch. To apply the patch just overwrite the files in the base game once it's extracted. This is explained in text when you download the patch as well.

Hi Ljink,

Absolutely amazing! As a long time fan of DQ1, it breathes new life into the game. The extra locations and secrets bring back the exploration aspect that a replay of the original just does not have. The mini medal system was super helpful and fun, as I am playing on impossible difficulty and getting $5k gold for finding 25 mini medals really helped me to afford the Magic Armor. I really liked the design and especially the music in South Port, and the ability to change battle themes is a very nice touch. The sprite work and animations are top-notch.

Currently, I have gathered the "vanilla" DQ1 items needed for the Rainbow Bridge, and am grinding my way to purchase the new shield in Mercado. I cannot challenge the Dragon Lord or Shadow Knight in Domdora yet, as of level 15. I notice you said that one of the QoL changes you added was less grinding, but am I correct that impossible difficulty requires a decent amount of grinding? There are many things that still destroy me in the overworld, and grinding metal slimes is unreliable as it requires them to not flee for 7 turns.

The only bug I noticed is that, after swapping out my Broadsword for the Flame Sword, my attack rating seems to be lowered by 8, the amount the Warrior Ring gives. Now, if I have a cypress stick equipped, and the Warrior Ring, my attack is displayed as 2, instead of 10. Without the Warrior Ring equipped, my attack rating is 0. Another example, with the Flame Sword I should have 36 attack, and it shows 28 on my status screen. In fact, when I go to look at the weapon shop menu, the Flame Sword shows an 8 point boost to my attack (28>36), even though I already have one equipped. I tried testing it to see if the Warrior Ring is still in effect, and it does seem that when I fight enemies my max hit with the Warrior Ring is 36, and without it I tend to hit lower so the bug may only exist in the status screen, as opposed to also in battle calculations.

Thanks so much for this project, I discovered it a few weeks ago and I have been addicted ever since. 10/10 remake, I can only hope Square Enix does partway as good of a job as you did on their future release of DQ3.

Thank you! And yes, the game on normal and easy require little grinding. Hard/Impossible mode require a lot of it.

In terms of ATK, the way it works in this game is STR=BASE STR+ ATK. So ATK is just letting you know the combined attack value of the weapon and or accessory that will be added into STR. STR is the value that gets calculated heavily into the damage output. However weapons do also give a boost. These are much less noticable in Hard mode though.

I will look into that bug though. That definitely seems off.

Really enjoying this game! The original was one of the first RPGs I ever played! Question: I'm currently lvl 50, but I'm stuck as soon as I enter the Demon world. The hills just outside the world gate are impassible for me. Did I break something by leveling?

You must be on v.1.0.1. You need to update the game to 1.0.6 in the downloads section.

Thanks for playing! I'm still happy to see so many are beating the game and enjoying the post game content to the end!

Im about to start the game and i was wondering is there a list of what the personality does,or is it like DQ3 personality? Also are you planning on remaking DQ2,I think that would be cool if you do!

No plans on remaking any DQ unfortunately. I'm planning to make my own DQ inspired IP starting in 2024.

Here's the personalities. They are limited as the game isn't as varied as DQ3.

Supple: Promotes DEF GAIN

Brave : Promotes ATK GAIN

Wise: Promotes MP GAIN

Curious : Promotes HP GAIN

Innate: Promotes AGI GAIN

OK, I give up. Neither my X-Box controller nor the keyboard is responding (KB at last not like it shown in the PNG....and I am just too old to waste my time trying to find a solution...there are so many other (working) games around.

That's unfortunate. There is a program called "kbdreset.exe" that should help in the game directory. Try running that.

I caught wind of your finished game, Happy for you!

Congrats!

Also there is some cut content as well? Can you tell us what that stuff is out of curiosity?

I assume any leftover areas or other things is accessible through the engine editor for those curious enough to take a look of what could have been. (I like looking through Beta & Prototype content, its a fun hobby).

Thanks man! I appreciate you coming in checking on the game from time to time.

And yes there is cut content, but in the final version most of it was removed. I plan on covering cut content in a blog here and on Twitter before the end of the year. There's quite a bit. But they are older builds.

Just finished this amazing game with
110% completion based on the bard, 5 gold stars, 1 blue stars, lvl 45, dragon armor and sword, i did save-scum ALL my seed usages to get +3 so i had very high stats.

Really amazing remake with extra content you created there!
That letter item at the end of the ice key realm was really awesome as well!

I do wonder however :
Why does the spell page and zoom page both still have 1 full empty page and a couple of empty slots, and the portal key has 4 empty ????? as well... are those simply cut content that you didnt feel like removing the options from the game?

Whatever you do decide to do afterwards, I wish you luck! You certainly have skills! Even if it took quite a while, you made something amazing :) After leaving the "AAA" gaming industry back in 2013 after 10 years in it, I personally started learning C# and decided to make full on small indy games in unity, and now I'm starting again with Unreal.. so If I was able to learn all of it and make it happen, I am certain you will be as well! :)

Thanks again for this remake, you really did make something great there!

Congrats! And yes the extra spells are still in the game but they don't function. There were many extra keys planned but I decided I wanted to move on from this game into something I can sell & can make a more original project.

I will keep them in the game just incase someone wants to take over the game and add more content. At this point yeah I'm done going in and updating menus and whatnot.

But I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for playing.

Didn't know you made games too. Do you have any links to anything? Socials? etc?

Dragon Quest + Review

Nothing will ever be perfect. When I started, I thought I was going to play a simple DQ remake with a touch of extras. I got a true nostalgic journey with lots of extras from a development team who clearly loves the entire series.

I played nothing but Dragon Quest + until I completed the game. This is a great upgrade to Dragon Quest 1 and we have it on RMN as an RPG Maker 2003 game- what a real treasure. I cannot wait to see a sequel.

Well, again I'm glad you enjoyed the game!

This will most likely be my one and only complete game to leave here on RMN. So it's good to go out on a good note.

In terms of a sequel...that isn't happening, lol. However, I am in the planning phase of a new project on Unity. If you'd like to see what I'll be up to next, you can follow my Twitter if you'd like:

Thanks for playing!

Yeah I can totally understand wanting to move on after finishing a project :) No worries then! Thanks for the tips for the world! I shall do that! :)

Let me know if you need any assistance with French translation, being native french, my French is MUCH BETTER than my english! :D

No problem! Good luck finishing the post game.

I currently have a team of FR translators and we no longer are looking for volunteers, but thanks for offering your help anyways!
