“It’s hard to believe you can do good work for the little amount of money these days. We did ‘The Graduate’ and that film still sustains. It had a wonderful script that they spent three years on, and an exceptional director with an exceptional cast and crew, but it was a small movie, four walls and actors, and yet it was 100 days of shooting.”

Dumb Notes:

-don't write your characters around the story:
i.e. character sees dragon on mountain.
-write the story around your characters:
i.e. character sees dragon, seeing dragon changes character.

-let emotion drive the scene. i.e. Will they make it out of this alive?
-let anger drive the action. i.e. "Are you crazy? I'm not picking that up!"

Classic Rpgmaker games that get mentioned alot:
A Blurred Line

It only takes 1 hour to beat, but it's a really fun 1 hour.
highly recommended, it scratched that short game itch I had, while working on this stuff.

Beetle Ninja on Steam!

Will the steam release include the official soundtrack for purchase?

Trailer looks great! thanks for posting MUSO!

What I would have told myself 10+ years ago

Great stuff as always. These two points stuck out to me the most:

Pick 1 or 2 things and do them really well, disregard all the rest. I remember not even deciding what the story would be. Truth is anything becomes lame the more you spend time on it and replay the intro over and over. With enough iteration you can potentially surprise just about anyone with enough time and thought, but that has a cost. That cost needs to be factored just as much as any other potential time sink. Really I should have just wrote the entire story in a first draft from start to finish, tweak things a bit along the way but actually stick to immovable story points.

Another thing to consider is just make a few sentences of what the game boils down to "A quirky RPG about an eventual uprising started by unlikely heroes." and just never go in a direction that contradicts that statement. When making The Godfather, Francis Ford Coppola merely went back to the word "Family" whenever he was stuck in a writing corner. This isn't some magical spiritual creative thing he was doing, but a way to merely not get off track and lose sight of the goal. It's vague enough to not be too exact, but concrete enough to understand why you wanted to make the thing in the first place.

I feel dumb sharing this but; those two dumb tech demos I made, they took 1 month each, but while making them I began to have self doubts over whether or not they'd still be funny once I finished them? What helped out, the most, was those animated gifs you see on the gamepages - not only is it a form of self advertising, but it helped me boil down the jokes to their most simplest form and by doing that it gave me the drive to go forward and finish them; because you could instantly see what the ending and beginning was going to look like and whether or not it worked and then all the work you had to do in between in order to make it complete - I feel like that's been the biggest challenge with rpgmaker; because we're grown up believing rpgs should be long detailed experiences, we never took into consideration the challenges and issues that come with that and I feel like it was only with time and watching smaller successes come out since then, that maybe we should probably start to aim for smaller, shorter more self contained experiences - because the biggest problem is always going to be, losing the scope of something.

Also, This 100%, I've been saying this for years ❤️:
. I would also encourage anyone in their early 20s to actually experience more of the world and daily life simply because expressing things creatively comes more easily when you actually have tangible experiences to pull from. Exposing yourself to different hobbies and activities that aren't just consuming media actually often helps and compliments the creative process.

Point is you should complete games faster so you can not only get the ideas out of your system but also to enjoy life more in-between.

This post, perhaps? The text specifically talking about making a fan-trailer uses strikeout, so, I question the seriousness of it. Though, LordBlueRouge seems to have a tendency to use strikeout as a "speaking softly" effect, so, I dunno.

I'm always serious...™

...Speaking honestly however, I think visitorsfromdreams would be a better person for the job, since he's done this professionally and I admire his work greatly, (I'm still pinning for slime knight to be RMN's mascot, I would've thrown him into so many commercials).
I don't work well with deadlines yet, so I mostly do this stuff for fun at the moment.

All I really wanna do is remake this:

...into a short commercial and have like cash, liberty and few others say like "Hero's Realm" at the end of it.
As soon as like a demo or something is released, I'll start gathering footage.

Steamed Hams but it's SilverGunner?

...Okay, I wanted to make a thread about this, but I thought I'd post it here. Does anyone notice how hard it is to find stuff on google these days? I was trying to find a link to the original video of Lu9's midi and I couldn't find it. Whenever I tried to do it on google, the monster with the fishing pool showed up.

However, when I searched "Skinner_and_the_Superintendent_Theme_Lu9.mid" using duckduckgo. the original video from youtube came up - something wrong is going on here, why is this not showing up on google when you search for it? It's a very minor thing, but like, it's making finding old rpgmaker games and performing old file searches a lot harder.

I always appreciate how you write down the challenges here, but also how you go about solving them. It kind of normalizes the process and sort of acts as a road map for the rest of us. I really enjoy reading these, really appreciate it.

Great work. ♡

Steam Demo Festival Aftermath  - Was it worth it?

author=Darken
Basically you reallllllllllllllllllllllllllllly want to have the game ready 5ish days before the festival starts (and not on a weekend) but you know how deadlines can be. If you don't make it well... actually nothing bad will happen, you might only miss out on some initial exposure but it's hard to know what exactly I missed out on without a time machine.

I can feel my whitehaired English/German photography teacher who was the head of the art department at the time, wagging his finger at me while reading this haha. Great read.♥ Really happy with your most recent success here.

Also this was really good too:
I ended it on a hook (new enemy type runs across the screen before going to the end screen door). I think that was the right call as I didn't want the game to overstay its welcome.

Thank you for sharing your experiences here. It means a lot for the rest of us. Really can't wait to see how this turns out.
This was really good!
