Twin Peaks ftw!

The map is looking good, though I still think the far bank shouldn't be brighter than the ground closer to the player.

Best RPG Boss Battles

This thread is boss!

(Sorry).

If Craze hadn't already mentioned them, I would have brought up Xenosaga Episode III's boss fights. It is definitely the best installment in the series, and the boss battles require constant attention from the player to keep up a working strategy. My only real complaint is that some of the boss battles really dragged on, for me at least. After it is clear that the player has a working strategy, there is no reason to drag things on for another five to ten minutes due to a huge boss health bar.

I'm a huge SMT fan, and while those games are frustrating at times, to say the least, I always respected Atlus for being able to design really clever and challenging turn based fights. It's honestly hard to pick just one favourite boss. One of my favourites though is definitely God Brahman from Digital Devil Saga 2, my favourite console RPG. God Brahman's strategy is pretty basic; an elemental battle of attrition, but the set up, pacing, and music of the final battle really adds a lot to the experience. The bosses abilities strike just the right balance of seeming daunting without seeming cheaply overpowered:

Somewhat surprisingly, I own Persona 4 but haven't gotten around to playing it yet. With all the good things I've heard about it, I probably should give it a try...for 'research'.

Yeah.

Whatchu Workin' On? Tell us!

I find writing down dreams can be a source of inspiration. One's mind assembles different ideas while asleep that it never would while one is awake.

I'm currently trying to find a way to divide picture sprites in half using the Ruby scripting engine. I want to have the enemies, when defeated, slashed in half instead of just fading away. I think this would be much more satisfying for the player.

I also prefer the purple sky.

Cool, I wish I'd written that now.

In any event, I'm glad you brought it up, as it made me try an airbrush anime style, which I think meshes better style-wise while still having a bit of the cutesy contrast I'm going for.

I've never trusted fairies, and I never will. I could never forgive them for the death of my boy.

Anyway, the map looks good, though the line between the diagonal and regular walls is pretty obvious, and I think the dark space outside the map should be darker.

I agree, though settling on an art style and then working from there is much faster than having to go back and change it all later.

But at least the maps are getting done.

I think colouring the lines helps the image look less flat, which is probably for the best. The recolouring only took about an hour, and colouring the other characters will probably take less time now that I know what I'm doing.

Me again (sorry for the double post).

So I went ahead and experimented with an airbrush style for the heroes. Here are the results:

I think you'll agree that the airbrushed character looks much nicer than the cell shaded character. It's not exactly the same style as the monsters and the backgrounds, but it is a lot closer and hopefully a little less jarring. The only problem is that of course this kind of art takes a lot longer than the flat cell shading.

Once again I have made more work for myself. -_-

Thanks. Well, my characters are intentionally somewhat generic-looking, as everything about my game is designed to evoke memories of old-school 80s and 90s RPGs (such as Ys). While the characters look generic, however, the events of the story are intended to turn those clichés on their head. I'll explain in greater detail once I get my act together and make a game page.

I'm actually recolouring one of my character line arts in the airbrush style just to see how it will look. If I like the results, I'll post it to get feedback on which people prefer. As you can probably tell, visuals are very important to me.
