Not quite right. (I hope I can explain this with my poor english xD)
The whole darkness thing refers to the thought of the requirement of a connection. Or to go with quantum physics: A conscious observer.
You surely know of the thought that if a tree falls, but no one is there who watches it, it may be that it actually in fact never happened.
I always thought this is an interesting theory, cause then there is nothing and no one who can give evidence of that event...

But to keep it more simple: The princess explains that someone has to know of the world to keep it alive. So to say you need a connection. Or better more than one. It's like you hang a ball on threads. When all threads disappear the ball will fall down. The same happens with Erayu. Someone once created this world, but it's now forgotten by it's connections. So the last "thread" is vanishing.

Like if you create a world, which exists just in your mind. And then you die. This will cause your world also to vanish. But if you write it down and publish it, and thousand of people read and know about it, it is still there. Even if it's creator isn't anymore.... This was the background idea ;D
