Try desaturating the continents, adding in a yellowish brown tinge, and using layer blend modes. The way it currently looks, it seems like it was just a parchment texture with an opacity drop to reveal the world map layer below.

Since everybody has seen the old classic REFMAP forest tilesets, I'd do a little more to show it off than this... Variance and the chaos of nature are key to any good outdoor map

To preface: I did not accept this entirely for the humor, although frankly it is pretty hilarious. At first I just posted it in IRC and was going to deny it. Then I realized that 'HardCoreXboxFan' brings up an interesting point for discussion, though he doesn't realize it.
What exactly is effort defined as in this community? How much effort is sufficient for making a good project? That sort of thing.
