HEARTBEAT Review

Thank you for taking the time to read my review while you are still finishing the game up! You even took time to answer all which is great :)

DIALOGUE SKIPPING:
You can actually skip dialogues but I guess we hadn't mentioned it in-game. To skip dialogue, simply hold down the W key (or Q? one of those). It'll make the text go by blindingly fast so it's useful for boss fights you gotta re-do.


Oh I didnt know that. I played with controller so maybe thats why I never noticed it.

I thought of snowfall covering the earth for the first one, and Wind beating Toxin was more of the idea of blowing away fumes. I didn't want to copy the general idea of elemental weaknesses/resists from existing games, so we made our own reasonings for a lot of them. For example: Shadow beating Flora is because of the idea that plants need sunlight to grow. I just personally like the weirdness of it all. There are RPGs where water beats fire but fire also beats water, so I figured it would be okay to do something odd like this. We spent a while trying to fit the elements together and not just stitching them together. We almost considered Toxin to beat Water with the reasoning being "pollution" but we decided against it.


Ahh ok that makes more sense now. I think it is good to bring in your own style and shouldnt stop that.

I'm not entirely into guys, but I find really beefy dudes aesthetically pleasing. If any character in HEARTBEAT looks really buff, they're going to be a dude. If they're kind of petite, they will be a girl. It's just my preference in terms of design. Not saying guys can't be petite or girls can't be buff, but like I said: just my preference. The only exception to this is Rick but that's because he's a little kid.


Totally can feel that actually haha. I love to draw and to draw portraits but only girls. Like boys are just any bit of interesting for in any asthetic way. Guess its the same here for you hehe. Well the models look neat so nothing much to complain but it is kinda unusual sight.

I hope the game comes out good. It is a fun game and very enjoyable. It sure deserves the love. So good luck!

Quick Update (Slight Delay)

Better make it right than fast. So im fine with that. I like the new sprites btw and the brown of Troz fits her much better. Pike seems pretty pissed though lol.

Thanks for the feedback! We're definitely looking into the stun thing, otherwise we're still in the process of fine-tuning things for the full release, so expect lots of tweaks and changes. As for the price, we've decided a while back that a name-your-own-price with a 5$ minimum would be ideal.

You hope 5$ is ok? You kidding. Thats easily worth a 10 bucks. But since we can pay our own price I will just do that. Gladly you are still looking into the game. I thought about the fighting system feeling dull argument. Maybe when you would more to rely on the elements it be more fun. Just a thought here though.

Quick Notes

Time Spent: 1h30m
Progress: I got to the start of the forest after the city (Fox-something)

- Pixel art is top-notch and sells the game practically by itself.
- The controls and UI/UX are very good. It's clear a lot of time and effort went into this.
- Music is very good but there are a few tracks that are played too often.
- The 4x random stun ability is overpowered.
- The battle system feels very bland and one-dimensional. Hard to put my finger on what, exactly, is missing. It's not just that the enemies are easy - that is easy to fix. Every new character feels like just a "+1 rando" rather than "this dude is unique and interesting." Expecting Chrono Trigger-level variety might be asking a bit much, but what you have here is pretty weak. (Might be a lack of equipment variety? i.e. equipment that gives significant stat boosts, resistances, or spells, so you have to strategize around it.)
- The dialogue has too much filler. I get what you're trying to do with it, giving each character their own flavor. That gets old quick. I would consider cutting ~25-50% of it.

That all might sound a bit harsh, but I'm assuming this will be sold at about the $9.99 price point (13 hours of gameplay) and am judging accordingly. If you can fix up the weak points, it can become a really outstanding game. Definitely looking forward to the final product!


Agree on the stun ability totally. Feels extremely abusive. On the other hand the skills with the low stun chance like never stuns for me. Dont know if thats really intended.
Battle System felt allright to me. Although its sometimes hard to keep track with the UI.
Asking for Chrono Trigger variety is probably to much ya. The characters all felt different to me. Just Rex didnt add much but the OP Stun. I think the problem here lies in the 100 Heartbeat moves. Since 3 Chars just got huge nukes. Makes them feel the same. Also you need to unlock "only" Kleins one? And you regenerate to much Heartbeat imo. You can just spam these moves.
Dialouges tend to be long ya. I enjoy them though but thats preference.
Price I would say around 10-15 too yes. 20 would be the top and very expensive I think. Specially if you look at other games in that franchise.
