Start You At Level 35 and Reset You to Level 1

Hey guys, first of all, yes, I am alive. Second of all, I was thinking of opening my game with the party at levels 34, 37 and 35 respectively, having the player go through a dungeon area kicking arse and taking names, and reach the boss. At this point in the game the boss will, in this order
1 - Overpower you
2 - Strip you down to level 1, removing all your abilities and equipment
3 - Toss you off his airship

From there on out the game's structure would be similar to that of a normal RPG, you slowly gain your levels again, buy your weapons again, relearn your skills, and so on and so forth.

As for why I'm considering opening the game this way, it shows the player the kind of powers and abilities they'll get to play with, let's them learn how the game is going to work. It also allows me to get straight to some action and get the player engaged straight off the bat. By then taking the powers away, the player has a reason to hate the villain, has a reason to fear the villain as they got their arses handed to them, and knows the potential of each one of their characters.

Of course it could backfire, throw the player off, then make the player simply stop playing and leave the room when they're demoted.

What do you guys think?

Game Drive Week 08

I was half tempted to say take a break for Christmas, but then I decided we've all been taking too much of a break as it is. I mean, we've not even had screenshots yet and were almost a third of the way there! So yeah, those of you who have time off for Christmas, do something to your projects!

Game Drive Week 07

So, today it's time for a discussion over engines (Craze, calm down). I noticed in the last topic that I'm not the only one going back to the drawing board. Originally I was gonna stick with my trusty RM2k3, but I then played in XP and VX and began to doubt I could achieve my desired effects in either program.

I then considered Game Maker 8, and was willing to learn proper coding for the first time in my life, until it struck me that if I'm willing to learn to code for GM8, why not learn something like XNA? OK, it's ambitious but it feels like a far more concrete decision with a better route for distribution.

I'm currently torn, and am considering signing up to a subscription based website to learn XNA coding from video tutorials, doing things the way I learn best, learn by example and learn by doing.

Game Drive Week 06

Thanks to everyone for the descriptions of their worlds last time, I think that's the longest topic we've had since week 1! Apologies for this being late, appropriately this week it's time for a...

Roll Call!

Who's still in this? Who's given up already? And have you (yes you) changed your project entirely and restarted already?

Game Drive Week 05

Where in the World?

So guys, where are your games set? What's the locations history? What are the landmarks? Why should we care/ be impressed? Tell us!

Game Drive Week 04

Hey guys, sorry this is a day late. Got home from work last night and a good friend quickly turned up to talk about some stuff he's going through and we ended up chatting til quite late and I've had work again today.

So yeah, four weeks in. Can you believe it's going so quickly? You know the drill ^^;

Game Drive Week 03

Apologies for how brief this post is. Just finished work and I'm in a bad area for Internet. I've decided we kinda need a thing each week to keep everything moving along at a nice pace and encourage discussion, this week we want to know who your main character is! Where does he come from? What drives him? What does he look like? I'll post my own when I get home, either as an extension to this post or as a reply.

Game Drive Week 02

OK guys, second week in! How's everyone doing so far? It seems we're already at different stages and taking different routes, but that's OK, we all have different methods and workflows, we also have different commitments outside these forums which is what helps make our community so varied and will help give each of your projects a sense of identity.

I don't want anyone to feel that they're not working fast enough or not making much progress. You have until June, Christmas is round the corner and we all have jobs/ college/ whatever, it's perfectly OK if you don't have a single map yet.

Right, after that semi-pep-talk-thing, let's begin week 2!

Game Drive - Week 01

OK guys, the Game Drive is upon us! It's time for everyone to start telling us what their plans are, start building some excitement and enthusiasm and jump off the mark strong!
