When the blessed day comes that I can retrieve my files off the ruined motherboard.

Remove the hard drive from your old computer, and get a hard drive dock, and use that to connect your old hard drive to your new computer so you can retrieve the files.

If your hard drive was recent it's SATA, if it's 7 plus years old, it might be IDE. If it's IDE, you'll probably need to get a hard drive enclosure, as I didn't see any docks that were IDE compatible on either NewEgg or TigerDirect.

I recommend a dock over an enclosure, as I recently bought an enclosure, and it ran real hot--had no fan, so I left it open and put it under a small fan I had to cool it off. As soon as I find the receipt, I'm returning it and getting a dock--they're cheaper and easier to use too.

Why not just record the hacking on video, as it was being done, and put it on YouTube then.

(boggles my mind too, btw. And on a college network no less... because those are never monitored or have their traffic recorded. WAIT, YES THEY DO)
