Do RPGs need a story?

author=LockeZ

Notice how the guy with the controller doesn't care about dialog. The guy without a controller should have his hands on an open book. Your motivation should be 'this game is fun and this is my entertainment.' While reading may be fun to a lot of people, there are different mediums that focus on reading. Like books. All without that pesky combat getting in the way.

Intellectual Property Means Nothing On Mobile

Content providers don't give a fuck. Just make money. Do it make us all money any way you can! I'm sure if you could make money playing Candy Crush you would. Steam proves it with trading cards. People will buy a game, not play it, but have it open just to get trading cards to level up and get booster packs to sell to make Steam wallet.

I played Candy Crush up to level 30 and then it started getting impossible. Took 3 weeks to beat whatever level I was stuck on. Then it just wasn't fun after that.

Do RPGs need a story?

You're in a goblin cave grinding for stats in the form of a level up or equipment.

You assume a role in everything. Doomguy is just a stranded marine in space. I'd say the motivation to play the game is that its actually fun.

Do RPGs need a story?

Woops guess I'm ok with plots. Just not stories? Well the story of you, but so many modern games just have cut scenes and walls of dialog. When I play RPGs here and I don't have control of my character within 5 - 10 minutes, I lose interest.

Heavily agree with Milennin: There are things that can hold my interest for 20 hours. Selecting "Attack" is not one of those things.

Final Fantasy 8 lets you skip all battles.

Wait, what? That's not a feature I remember!

I didn't remember the feature either until I went back and slogged through it as an adult. Its some esper power. You can do 50% battles or 100% no battles. It seemed pointless having no battles.

Do RPGs need a story?

That sounds like a combat flaw. If the combat is boring, why have it? When you can just have a story. Like To the Moon or Final Fantasy 8 lets you skip all battles.

Do RPGs need a story?

A lot of people play RPGs for the story. People love Final Fantasy characters. I personally don't care. Don't need a back story to my characters. I don't need a story. I just need to play like back with Dragon Quest. Princess is kidnapped. Save her. Mario has used that formula too. Zelda seems to use a simple formula too.

So I'm asking, do RPGs need a story?

They need dialog of course like the castle is to the north or boy I hate that monster that keeps eating our children. That alone could be a story. Your own story journeying to the castle. Journeying and killing the monster. Like silent protagonists from Half Life or Doom.

Original twist for Space Invaders, Maybe?

The sad thing about Space Invaders is the fact they aren't invaders, they're reclaimers that have come back for their planet after Earthlings killed everything on it. The invaders are the last hope for their entire race.

[VX Ace] Russian Roulette Skill

4 hours ing. I've made a script to collect the user and target and damage the user if shot. Now the hangup is damaging the enemy or even finding the enemy. Too many odd troop variables, after that it will be showing the damage done. I think I'll give this a rest for now.

[VX Ace] Russian Roulette Skill

I think this can be done in common events, but lately I've gotten into a lot of scripting no one else has done. I think I'm up for this challenge to script it.

Alright, 90 minutes later. I have the skill where it pulls the trigger at himself and switches back and forth. Starts with a 1 in 6 chance. Then drops to 1 in 5 and so on.

I've got the base damage ratio at 150 HP and it doubles each failed attempt. This can all be changed. I've got a damage ratio thing so you can change it to damage *= 1.5 or whatever you want.

I also need to call into question the random. I have the system showing the variables. And about 95% of the time the gun goes off on the 5th bullet when there is a 50/50 chance. But I guess random is random. This also makes the skill pretty long. But I guess random is random.
