SMILINGDRAGONRPGSTUDIO'S PROFILE

The focus of Smiling Dragon RPG Studios is to deliver fun, story-driven role-playing games (RPGs). We believe that RPG-making is a work of art in which the story and gameplay must complement each other in order to deliver quality titles that you can enjoy.

Formerly known as "Shaola development team", we are a small group of fantasy fanatics, writers and indie developers who love the RPG genre. We design user-friendly games with simple mechanics and fun gameplay.

Shaola development team was created in 2015 to focus on the Shaola series and design the world of Shaola. We design a unique and alternative world to maximize our imagination and creativity.

In 2016, after a year of working remotely online and meeting on Zoom (as our members are studying and working on their main jobs all over the world), we finally had two offline meetings in San Diego and Los Angeles. We had great conversations about our vision and overall philosophy on RPG-making.

We discussed in detail some of the well-known parallel universes in fiction, such as Middle-Earth, Neverland, Elfland, Discworld, the rich worlds of A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones), and The Witcher, as well as the great storytelling of Japanese fiction, notably manga and JRPG. Afterward, we decided to write about the great stories in the world of Shaola.

With that approach, we focused on creating hybrid role-playing games that combine our favorite aspects of old-school Western RPGs and JRPGs, while at the same time removing those things some players didn't like, such as random encounters and time-consuming grinding.

Smiling Dragon RPG Studios was formed in 2016 as the product of those two great meetings in California.

The Shaola series is a long-term project. It is a process of telling great stories about many appealing characters in different kingdoms and regions in Shaola. The gameplay in Shaola RPGs will be based on the distinct story, characters, settings and environment of each title.

Hidden behind the beautiful high fantasy theme is the cruel world of medieval politics, as each character and faction has different motives and conflicts.

We try our best to avoid creating carbon copies of the Tolkien-esque RPGs from the 1990s—the ones in which players go on a heroic mission, meet orcs, wizards, trolls, goblins and hobbits, defeat some dark Lords and win the game. We will try our best to be much more innovative and creative in our storytelling.

Old-time writers tend to oversimplify the struggle between good and evil into stereotypical clichés. The Shaola series introduces gray tones into a black-and-white universe.

Two major characteristics of every game in the Shaola series are: I. Fun and easy gameplay; and II. Innovative, creative storytelling that builds your enjoyment to the fullest. The story in each game will be entertaining, designed to hook you from the beginning to the end, and on par with any adventure game or visual novel.

It is a combination of many fun things that we've loved since childhood, from our very first experiences with storytelling and fiction. The Shaola series is a present through which we share a fun, exciting, enjoyable and delightful experience with you.

Heroes of Shaola

Thank you for your kind words. I'm glad you like the game. The game is still under development.

We have been discussed about giving away free copies of this game exclusively for the rpgmaker.net community, but we still don't know how are we going to do that yet.

If you interested in the Shaola series, you may want to play this game too: https://rpgmaker.net/games/8437/

We divided our team out to work on the two projects separately. At the present, I'm pretty much working on Heroes of Shaola all day. Hopefully it will get done soon.

Cheers!

demo was awesome :) one question though where can I buy full game?

Heroes of Shaola

May I ask what difficulty (Easy, Normal, Hard or Legendary) are you playing at?

Put Sleep Pollen on a Priority of 3 and Posion Breath on 4 and leave attack at 5, that should fix the problem.

Thanks for your suggestion. I think this is a very good idea. I'll try it and test it out.

In the next version (0.1.5 or 0.1.6) we'll divide the Haunted Mushroom into 5 different kinds with each kind specialized in one (or a few) things. The balance should be better.

Thanks for your kind input. I appreciate it.

Obviously, we'll get a publisher or a professional to help us clean up the grammar. None of us are native English writer.

I'm surprise with the spelling thing, though. I'm the one who works with the engine and I'm very carefully with each word. I used Word and a bunch of grammar programs to check the text. This is one of the main reasons why it took so long. Obviously software can't proof read like human could, but they should caught all misspell words.

First, let me admit that English class was my worst class in school :)

Having said that....

I did enjoy your demo very much. Graphics were good and I like learning the battle system.
The BIG problem with this being a COMMERCIAL game is the spelling and grammar.
It's really not good. Way to many words not spelled correctly and the grammar made
some of your sentances a little difficult to understand.

If the spelling and grammar are cleaned up, this would be a better received game.

Hope this comment helps you to improve your game and make a lot gold in the game making market :)

About the presentation flaws, yeah this is not our thing. Right now I just want to put some concepts and the Tech Demo in the RPG Maker community to get some feedback and constructive criticisms.

When the project is closer to the finish line, things will get real. We'll have to either hire a team of professionals to do PR/Marketing/Press/Distributions etc.

I was looking at a site the other day, it cost $724, yikes. If our funding failed, we would have to team up with some publishers. They will publish the game and do their things, we do ours and focus 100% on completing the games. We've done some research and is looking at 5 indie friendly publishers right now.

You can take a look at the presentation of Heroes of Shaola at Softpedia: http://games.softpedia.com/get/Games-Demo/Heroes-of-Shaola.shtml

That's how a presentation should be done. I did my best but that's why they are professional editors.

About the party thing, it's kinda hard to explain clearly. I just want to make it short.

Basically the default party system for RMVXA games is not that logical. In real life, if you bring 18 guys with you and then seeing deadly enemies, why would you just pick out 4 or 5 guys to fight?

So basically we have a Recruitment/Inn system. Just like real life, when you recruit some one, that person will stays some where. When you travel, you choose your team at the Inn (or any appropriate place) and bring them with you. Whoever you bring is the one that you'll fight with.

No I don't think you're being mean. I appreciated the blatant straightforward opinions, like Firefly in our free project here: https://rpgmaker.net/games/8437/

The things is as far as RPG Maker games, non-commercial games should have a huge advantage over the commercial games, because they have an unlimited resources and supports from the community. Personally I have done a lot of non-commercial projects before, both as individual and as a team.

There are a lot more stuff going on with commercial games, it's basically a business, there are a lot of legal things involve. And people tends to discriminate against commercial games. Probably for good reasons, due to a huge amounts of bad commercial games out there.

I would said all non-commercial games that nominated for Misao Awards at this site are far better than many $20 RPG Maker games on Steam. You can go to Steam and check out the tag "RPG Makers" and look at some games.

Lol, take a look at our side project, it's free. Maybe you'll like it more. Check it out: https://rpgmaker.net/games/8437/media/3832/
