SMILINGDRAGONRPGSTUDIO'S PROFILE

The focus of Smiling Dragon RPG Studios is to deliver fun, story-driven role-playing games (RPGs). We believe that RPG-making is a work of art in which the story and gameplay must complement each other in order to deliver quality titles that you can enjoy.

Formerly known as "Shaola development team", we are a small group of fantasy fanatics, writers and indie developers who love the RPG genre. We design user-friendly games with simple mechanics and fun gameplay.

Shaola development team was created in 2015 to focus on the Shaola series and design the world of Shaola. We design a unique and alternative world to maximize our imagination and creativity.

In 2016, after a year of working remotely online and meeting on Zoom (as our members are studying and working on their main jobs all over the world), we finally had two offline meetings in San Diego and Los Angeles. We had great conversations about our vision and overall philosophy on RPG-making.

We discussed in detail some of the well-known parallel universes in fiction, such as Middle-Earth, Neverland, Elfland, Discworld, the rich worlds of A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones), and The Witcher, as well as the great storytelling of Japanese fiction, notably manga and JRPG. Afterward, we decided to write about the great stories in the world of Shaola.

With that approach, we focused on creating hybrid role-playing games that combine our favorite aspects of old-school Western RPGs and JRPGs, while at the same time removing those things some players didn't like, such as random encounters and time-consuming grinding.

Smiling Dragon RPG Studios was formed in 2016 as the product of those two great meetings in California.

The Shaola series is a long-term project. It is a process of telling great stories about many appealing characters in different kingdoms and regions in Shaola. The gameplay in Shaola RPGs will be based on the distinct story, characters, settings and environment of each title.

Hidden behind the beautiful high fantasy theme is the cruel world of medieval politics, as each character and faction has different motives and conflicts.

We try our best to avoid creating carbon copies of the Tolkien-esque RPGs from the 1990s—the ones in which players go on a heroic mission, meet orcs, wizards, trolls, goblins and hobbits, defeat some dark Lords and win the game. We will try our best to be much more innovative and creative in our storytelling.

Old-time writers tend to oversimplify the struggle between good and evil into stereotypical clichés. The Shaola series introduces gray tones into a black-and-white universe.

Two major characteristics of every game in the Shaola series are: I. Fun and easy gameplay; and II. Innovative, creative storytelling that builds your enjoyment to the fullest. The story in each game will be entertaining, designed to hook you from the beginning to the end, and on par with any adventure game or visual novel.

It is a combination of many fun things that we've loved since childhood, from our very first experiences with storytelling and fiction. The Shaola series is a present through which we share a fun, exciting, enjoyable and delightful experience with you.

Heroes of Shaola

You can try go to the Menu and set game difficulty to "Easy". Make sure to kill the single Orc first, to loot for better weapons and boost up Raphael's Anger, save his Anger skill for the hard fights. Utilize everything (skills, anger, items) during those tough fights.

Game was kinda basic, but interesting. Couldnt get pass the 4 orcs after many tries. They get too much random crits and stuns into my party, which was basically 1 guy and a weakling that immediately gets twoshotted. This download was only a demo anyway so...

Some clarification:

- This map is to show the basic geography of the world of Shaola. It won't be in the actual games, Shaola or Heroes of Shaola. The main setting of Shaola is in Everland. The main setting in Heroes of Shaola is in Zenman and Amazail.

- The different colors on the map supposed to differentiate nations, not landscape. It's not snowy on the north of the Great Desert.

- Most of the mountains supposed to mean uninhabited areas. There are no mountains on the map that represent national borders, except for the Ankania-Amazail border. They are natural obstacles that divided the "north" and the "south". This is the perception of the people of the 8 kingdoms, since no ordinary man ever cross the Great Desert.

Those mountains are the only reasons that the corrupted Ankania hasn't get swallowed by the powerful Amazail, yet. The natural obstacles and geographical advantages of the Ankanian are the main elements that defend the southern kingdoms from the northern aggression.

You can read more about Amazailian-Ankanian history here and here.

Hi, thanks for your comment. Busts are display for important characters on cutscene only. Important characters are the ones that previously introduce by special effects. We tested the Yanfly script and it wasn't really a great fit.

Heroes of Shaola

We don't know for sure yet, since the game isn't finished. But based on what have been done so far, it probably contains at least 10 hours of comprehensive gameplays, not counting the side quests and exploration.

The game series will focus on nostalgic feeling. We're trying to bring back the players' childhood with some improvement on the plots and story.

How many hours is this game? Graphics remind me ALOT of the game dink smallwood and I loved dink smallwood.

Heroes of Shaola

Hint: The "Guard" option in the battle will build up your Anger pretty fast. You can use the Anger skill of that character when your Anger points are 100. Anger skill is the most powerful skill of a particular character. Some characters have it, some don't, some haven't learn it yet. Most badass characters in the game have it.

Heroes of Shaola

In the latest version (0.2), the Haunted Mushroom have been divided to 3 different kinds and they'll be less powerful. The Blightcap specialized in delivering ailments and bad states. The Sleepycap specialized in making you sleepy and delivering more painful physical damage. The Redcap is a poisonous mushroom that specialized in poison.

In realistic play, the Blightcap is the most deadly of the trio and you'll probably want to eliminate them first.

But basically, when you have a powerful guy like Raphael in your party, in Easy or Normal mode, you should be able to beat 'em up. Especially if you drink the Energizer or have been farming around to build up Raphael's Anger skill (Fist of Fury).
