Hi I do art mostly but also do games.
Please read my comic, Patchwork and Lace. It's about a Lovecraftian Disney Princess dark mage and her superpowered undead partner hunting monsters and being bad at communication.

2021 Misaos - Thoughts, Ideas, Plans
I do like the idea of having more event-based awards to hype up those games! Not a fan of team-based awards- the Misaos are already a popularity contest, so making it about people instead of games is just gonna make that more stark.
Though having more focus on promoting event games and encouraging nominations might naturally lead to more event games in the misaos, since it's all based on what's released in that year. This isn't a bad thing, just... we might not even NEED specific awards for them! :D
This is definitely a problem- the game page layout isn't really intuitively designed, and all the important bits are really underemphasized. You really need to know what you're looking for, and nobody knows to look for the nominate button.

I'm not sure if someone said this yet, but if it's possible, making the "Nominate" button more prominent and / or more clear might be a good step towards getting nominations. If people are new to the site, they might not know what "Nominate" means, what it does. Also, the button is kinda hidden and nondescript if you don't know what you're looking for.
I think having a "Nominate for Misao Award!" Button in its place might be kinda neat. That's obviously not gonna fix the whole 'lack of nominations' problem, but along with the community changes other people have recommended, it would probably help.

New to rpg world
Suggestions:
1) Go to main page, look at the games shown there, and pick a few that look good.
2) Go to the random page and pick a few that look good.
Then play them.
Then do a review! (And/or nominate for Misao awards if you can!)

I am a big fan of the offsite voting idea! Anything that gives more control to the voting process while not overtaxing our code doodz.

Though, alternatively, I suppose we could sticky What RMN game are you playing now? to cultivate that discussion as well. Not just simply for the Misaos, but, like, just in general.
Yes please!

How about a review event at the end of the year aimed only at Misao nominated games? Or any sort of event that encourages people to play more games and talk about them before nominating, I dunno.
Part of the problem is that end of the year is a really busy time for most people, and currently misaos are mostly populated by well-known/reviewed games anyway. The root issue is just a lack of nominations throughout the year, IMO.

You could also go the eurovision route and have both the public vote and a committee, who rank the games and then the amalgamated score determines the winners.
While this would be neat, it would also take FOREVER because the judges would have to play every game. This results in delays of a million years on contests that limit the games to about an hour; imagine what multi-hour epics would be like. We'd still be waiting for the judges by the time the next misaos happen!

You're right Mirak. I guess my favourite solution would be to make misaos semi-curated. And by curation I mean adding extra items in underrepresented categories and for example removing major goty players from the kentona's award.
Hell yeah!

I'm now wondering whether just adding a thread in Video Games dedicated to on-site games would work out better- instead of being dedicated to the Misaos, just drive some kind of discussion and awareness so people in the community can recommend and chat about the video games the site was made for.
And also seed it with the occasional (genuine!) post about nominating a game for Misaos if it's valid!
For real someone who plays a lot of games do this.
Beware of scams like this...(pretending to be Paypal)

Or we can solve the whole thing by removing the best event game misao.
That's not a solution that's murder :(

...I'm not poo pooing effort here. I'm saying there's a very real limit to what I can do as one person on RMN and that most of the information I get for the misaos is from actively searching and listening to you guys and then rounding that info up with what little time I have.
To be clear, my rant was more addressed toward the larger community, where we're supposed to be here to make and celebrate RPG Maker games, but nobody can be bothered to actually do that.

I'm not even talking about a dedicated thread, just more calls to action. Like youtubers are always saying "Like, comment, and subscribe!" because that has a measurable positive effect on engagement, so IMO we should work on building a culture of noms in addition to reviews if we want the Misaos to be anything other than an unremarkable, pointless prom court vote.
It'd also be nice if we didn't have completely disqualifiable stuff on the ballots, but that's not something most of us have control over.

Like honestly it's pretty discouraging how even when you're trying your damnedest to get any kind of discussion about RPG Maker games going on RPG Maker dot net, apparently not a single person on the site gives a shit. All the promotion and conversation happen off site, and any time someone tries to bring any sort of interaction about these games to the community based around them, the response is
