Hi I do art mostly but also do games.

Please read my comic, Patchwork and Lace. It's about a Lovecraftian Disney Princess dark mage and her superpowered undead partner hunting monsters and being bad at communication.

What do guinea pigs dream about? Probably not this, but just roll with it.

What makes you want to play one game over another?

Interesting-looking gameplay. And/or the impression that it's a good horror game, because I am a sucker for the spoopy.

Arguing that old games weren't ever going for "realistic" because they suck in comparison now is like arguing that early color movies weren't going for fidelity because digital is more detailed.

And yeah, video game writing- ESPECIALLY dialog- roundly sucks, because the kind of people who generally end up writing video games are not really writers, they are gamakers. (And usually learned via playing older games and/or consuming genre fiction, which tend not to focus on well-crafted writing.)

Really, I think we'd have a lot more good-looking games if we could regard the subject as an objective comparison of light information and animation principles rather than just devolving into "newfag vs retrofag" all the time.

This.

The same could be said of all religions pixels, though. Arguing over a medium is silly, because it's all about the execution. It's like asking whether colored pencils or carved marble is better.

Do RPGs need a story?

author=Zachary_Braun
Games can be tacked on in any manner of ways, but without a story, there's no grace... it's just a lab rat plugging a skinner bar for a food pellet.

There can be grace in battle tactics, exploration, and graphics. A story in the sense of "here are some people and their motivations and dialog" is not necessary for good gameplay. The idea that a game NEEDS a story is ridiculous. (And I say this as someone who is a big fan of the story side of games.)

The Screenshot Topic Returns

The lack of shadows is kinda weird, and the pole thingies in the upper left stick out visually because they seem to have an outline. Beyond that, I like it.

Notice how the guy with the controller doesn't care about dialog. The guy without a controller should have his hands on an open book. Your motivation should be 'this game is fun and this is my entertainment.' While reading may be fun to a lot of people, there are different mediums that focus on reading. Like books. All without that pesky combat getting in the way.

Yeah, all those people that like things like "character interaction" and "narration" are just losers that should go read a book and leave the gaming to REAL gamers, who only want to press buttons to hit things until they die.

Or IDK maybe it is possible that there are different ways to tell stories in games, and different ways to appreciate games, and the point of that comic was that people enjoy games in different ways and shouldn't get into a brawl over someone having badwrongfun.

JUST MAYBE
