[SCRIPTING] [RMVX ACE] Is there a way to play sounds on ineffective attacks?
Okay, probably the way I would do this would be to add a :resisted attr_accessor property to Game_Battler and alias initialize to set @resisted to false before doing the other initialisation stuff. Then I would alias make_damage_value to look something like this:
And then in perform_damage_effect of Game_Enemy:
And the same sort of thing for perform_damage_effect in Game_Actor.
Obviously you'd have to put together a script that will overwrite those unless you want to edit the defaults (which I wouldn't recommend) and replace 'parry' with whatever SE you want to have on resist (you could even add it to Audio as a method so you can call that instead).
def make_damage_value(user, item) value = resist_check = item.damage.eval(user, self, $game_variables) value *= item_element_rate(user, item) value *= pdr if item.physical? value *= mdr if item.magical? @resisted = true if value < resist_check value *= rec if item.damage.recover? value = apply_critical(value) if @result.critical value = apply_variance(value, item.damage.variance) value = apply_guard(value) @result.make_damage(value.to_i, item) end
And then in perform_damage_effect of Game_Enemy:
def perform_damage_effect @sprite_effect_type = :blink if @resisted Audio.se_play("Audio/SE/parry") else Sound.play_enemy_damage end @resisted = false end
And the same sort of thing for perform_damage_effect in Game_Actor.

Is humor harder to pull off in games?
Timing is one thing that can be funny if subverted, yes, though the situation itself being unexpected can also be a source of humour.

Okay, I'll tell you where you need to put it. One sec. Just to clarify, do you only want to play this sound specifically if the target's resistances caused less than 100% of normal damage?

Yay, victoly!
I ended up getting pretty lucky in terms of items/abilities with the exception of the potato. My first ability (Engarde) allowed me to protect either me or my ally from a night attack. It was then replaced with an ability (Unguard) that let me negate abilities or items that prevented my items from working on other players. I also had a bulletproof vest that protected me from one bullet, and I got a mine (which I used to kill someone, was telling the truth about that).
Interesting that I dodged the sword above my head only by virtue of Libby wiping the traps. :D

Building on the point I made in my last post, I think the closest we can ever get to defining a general cause of someone finding something funny, it's when they expect one thing but get something that completely subverts their expectation to the point where the incongruity between what the brain tried to fill the blank with and what actually ended up in the blank can't be reconciled, so we justify it by deriving enjoyment from its absurdity.

I've always found references best used subtly, tucked away as little extras. But then you have games that put the references front and center, and then they feel cheap and feel like an aversion to writing original content.
Just gonna leave this here.

Is humor harder to pull off in games?
It's a difficult question to answer. The nuances of one's sense of humour are probably one of the biggest mysteries of humanity. What is "funny"? You can ask 100 people and you'll get 100 different answers.
I tend to lean towards the surreal or absurd when it comes to putting humour in my work. I like to poke fun at established conventions or lampshade tropes. One thing I really like doing is writing funny descriptions for items, like in Sidhe Quest I had the conceit that all your equipment started out as being made of cardboard, so there was a Cardboard Ring with the description "Don't propose to your partner with this, trust me."
At the end of the day, jokes are as hard to pull off in video games as they are congruent with the sense of humour of the player. And your mileage will wildly vary with that one.
I think it can be said that one of the most "safe" ways of doing humour in games is, as I said, making fun of all the things in games that we roll our eyes at when we see them but put up with for the sake of the medium. As Liv puts it "With my inexplicable healing powers and unrequited love for you, there's no obstacle we can't overcome!".

Guys, as much as I'd miss the sweet sweet makerscore I'm considering converting SiR and JiJ into blogs. This would allow me to more easily lay things out, I'd control my own submissions, and I could link articles between each other to show things like which classes call a given method. Do you think that would be better for the community?
