Is RPG maker the best game developing sofware? You Judge
RPGmaker is by far not the "best" maker around. It is the easiest though.
If you want to be a professional game developer I would suggest sphere. It's free and based on Javascript.
Why this one you wonder?
It should be obvious that being a professional developer will likely not start with a major job at some big gamestudios.
Therefor budget is smaller etc etc. In my opinion the best way to start a succesfull (read money) carreer would be in webbased games like flash. However since html5 supports a canvas module which can be used to make direct browser games written in Javascript, I see a big future for this method of gamedevelopment (both for desktops and smartphones).
So here you have it, the opinion of a unprofessional game developer using rm2k3 XD.

Combat systems: Do's and Dont's & Opinions
Well one thing that always comes in mind is the following:
I dislike it when people try to put every system they liked in a game in one game. Thus making it very difficult to get the hang of it and very difficult to make any sence or balance it.
An other thing is big animations. If you have like monster combo, go for it, but don't annoy me with 30 second battle animations on minor element magic XD.

What are you thinking about? (game development edition)
I was thinking about switching over to XP and rebuilding the menu (I once posted) in that program. Got pretty far actually but after half a day I opened rm2k3 again XD.
Can I use RM2K sprites in VXA?
You're good to go if you resize everything x2. Rm2k(3) uses 320x240 resolution with 16x16 pixels tiles.
XP/VX/VXace use 32x32 tiles

Alternatives to Towns
It would be wise though to have a diffrence in doors you can open and which you can't. It's a bit tedious to click every door just to see if you can open them.
Cancelling "Move Picture" if there is no picture...
Haha, I just got the most simple solution for you EVER! I downloaded the trial of RMVX yesterday (nice battle music btw, but the rest of the program is not suited for me) and I thought: why not try to get this bug to help you.
Now, first I didn't get the bug at all, after messing with the picture command I did got it.
Problem, when you place pictures with "center" as origin RMVX will try and find your bitmap (picture) width and devide it by two to get the centerpoint of it. Since there is no picture, it just says: Hey you, there is no picture to get a width from so here is an error in your face.
However, when I first tried to simulate this bug I had my origin selected at topleft. When I do this I don't get the error because it isn't looking for the bitmap width.
So here you go, easy solution for you: Set origin to topleft instead of center!

You don't have to force wait time if you don't do "stop all progress until moved".
Besides that, you could use transparant dummy pictures that you won't see to avoid the picture not found error.

Hmm, another thing: If you are using a picture based menu, why would you run two events, one for button pressing and one for the cursor to show.
I don't know if this by any point usefull, but in rm2k3 I do this in one event, just updating the cursor movement and placement after I press a button.

choosing a good-looking rpg engine

I would also suggest, to stay away from rpg maker 2k and 2k3, and even XP and VX. (VX is pointless, Ace has better support, and is more powerful, and XP is outdated, as well as the old rpgmakers)
Allthough I agree with you that rm2k(3) shouldn't be adviced to anyone (apart from oldschool fanboys like me) I don't get why you wouldn't advice RmXP. From all the new makers it would actually be my first choise. Three layers for tilesets, unrestricted size for chipsets and other nifty things =).
Btw, I tried your link, but it didn't work. I would like to try it. Edit: never mind, just copy and paste the link XD.
