Would U play an FFX 2D made with RM2K3? (first screenshot)
This is actually really funny. The FF72D remake I published is actually my second attempt. The first one I made was when I was just getting started with rm2k and it was probably worse than this. I decided myself that I'd come back later when I can do it properly.
I'd say by all means keep working on this. Projects like this force you to study every detail of the source material and you can learn a lot about game design by doing that.

Heh, you guys are like 6 years too late to the conversation around the best engine for this. The answer is obvious anyway, any real programming language would've been better (including RGSS/Ruby in the newer RM's), but it's a moot point. At the time my decision to go with RM2K3 was one of pragmaticism and familiarity.
Having said that, there's a difference between better and easier. FF7's battle mechanics differ so widely from the built in systems in VX that I would've been forced to start from scratch anyway. So although I would've definitely benefited from using RGSS as opposed to eventing, I really doubt I would've found the task "easier".
Quoted for truth.

I have to agree; content creation is the number 1 drain on time for games. Creating the underlying framework for that content is the fun part.
A customized battle system is easy to make in RPG Maker 2003, just not as convenient as straight coding done in the later RGSS RPG Makers.

I honestly can't believe you're still working on this, but I'm really glad.
In the event you don't finish this, can you release the battle system?
I've thought long and hard about if I should release an unlocked version, and I honestly still haven't made up my mind. That deliberation aside though, I'd be very surprised if anyone could put any of the code to use; there's just too much of it and it would take a long time to sift through it all. But yeah, there's still a very real chance I might release an unlocked version, I'm just not sure it'd be useful beyond satisfying people who'd like to lurk through the project (which is always fun anyway).
Additionally, if I do decide to unlock everything that also would include my releasing proper spritesheets on Spriters Resource or something.
Dynamically lighting my room to games/tv with a wifi bulb
author=PizzaYep, that's basically the ideal mode, and I'll probably go one further and make it choose the dominant colour instead of the average.
I think it'd be a lot nicer (for me anyways) if it just changed colour based on the overall colour tone of the screen. I don't know how hard it would be to rig that up, but I think it'd be cool. Probably a lot less jarring with the transitions as well.
This is a neat idea though. I might look into something like this in the future.

Hah, yeah it's a pretty rough attempt right now. To clarify there's an RGB LED bulb in my ceiling, and it's being set according to the average colour of a 100x100 sample from the centre of the display.

Hey guys,
A few weeks ago I ordered myself a cheap WiFi LED bulb with the goal of dynamically lighting my room for games/tv. Here's the results. :)

I'm designing my own battle system at the moment that is somewhat automated and by sheer accident stumbled upon your work. Similar to you I much prefer to work on the technical systems first and sort out the story/events later.
I'd be very interested to hear more about your dev process. Out of curiosity how did you integrate your system? Did you subclass, override or start fresh?

Thanks for the support guys!

author=AdditPretty close, it's currently at 4242! The bulk of it is item and materia names/descriptions. Surprisingly the text system is rather simple; you just need a single picture for each possible character (I'm using 83) and a call event for each one to print out the character with the correct width spacing (and a few extras like space, newline). This is made possible by Cherry's Pic Pointer Patch, otherwise it'd be nigh impossible and I'd have to individually place each character for every text box.
Man, the amount of pictures in your picture folder must be at a staggering amount, probably more than 5000+ since you even emulated your own text instead of using the default one. That's just pure insanity! Even I wouldn't go that far.
author=XBusterMostly custom! I was able to rip all the battle effects from FF7, so I've tried to reuse things that still work well in 2D. All the backgrounds, charsets, tilesets, etc are mine though. Before this project I had never done pixel art and have just picked it up as I've gone along, but I think I'm getting better.
Are all of the graphics custom made? I know that would take a while because FF7's areas range from completely natural areas to modernized towns and cities.
