Dragon Warrior: Begin a New Quest

Ohh, see, I had in my mind the "items" that they were equipped with. In many (most?) instances, I would make sure that their weapons and armour were unequipped - and put back into your bag - before they left. This is explicitly stated at least once, too, when I think Owen says something like "Oh by the way, here are my things."

That being said, with the individual inventory system that I used (thanks to a terrific script!), it is impossible to remove items equipped to the ITEM slot, which is closer to what I was referring to.

Checking into it more closely: I'm a little surprised at what happened with your hero, to be honest. Some specifics:

When the hero leaves your party, he is fully unequipped immediately before his departure, except for equipped "items".

When he returns to your party, the code in the scene specifically does nothing more than adds a full set of Platinum equipment to your inventory and equips it all. I certainly never (and would never intend to) throw out any of his old things, before or after he leaves your party, exactly because he could be carrying some important stuff. Are you 100% sure that you didn't sell it off or something after he left? (I doubt it - but I can't be sure!) I just don't see at all what could have made something like that happen in the game's code. :)

There are so many layers to sift through, though, and events where things happen - it would be easy to miss something I guess. You have been extremely vigilant and watchful, and I greatly appreciate the help in spotting some of these things!

Hey Salvia, wonderful to hear! Some answers (and probably some not-really-answers) are enclosed in the spoiler:

1. Wonder may be recruited by visiting Evandusk post-game. You might remember, you might not: But Wonder is the slime that dreamed of going on an adventure one day! He will be ready to go with you if you go and chat with the little guy.

2. Wow, good eye. As a matter of fact, it is working perfectly: The issue is that the increase is not reflected in the amount of Exp reported at the end of battle. The game will double it "quietly" and add the result to your total experience. Thus, if you fight a slime and get 1 Exp, and you have used Voice of Experience, then you will see "You receive 1 Experience point!" but each character will be rewarded with 2.

3. The characters will generally come back in the state you left them. I don't believe it is possible for a character to leave your party without losing "essential" equipment first, but they will return with whatever they left with. I guess it is a mix between "intentional" and "I didn't really care that much anyway" in the end. :)

4. There are a few enemies that can indeed cause people to drop their weapons. In particular, King Slimes and a couple of others can "throw its weight forward" and the target takes damage and drops their weapon. It may be re-equipped after battle. In Rubiss's case, you might have been hit by the spell of "Sag" or "Sagmore" which has the dreadful effect of lowering the target's attack power significantly (without any great way of countering it except to die and come back). Bikill doubles damage inflicted, but does NOT change attack power - and thus is ineffective and getting past this effect.

5. The Sage's Stone cannot be obtained through any lottery. However, the Sage's Focus can be - that may be what you're thinking of? (To be clear, this can be done with the Golden Ticket only, in Polona).

6. Oh - probably! There are a ton of things hidden among in Rubiss' cave, including those irritating grains of sand on the water route. There is a piece of spectacular equipment, one on each of those routes. Also, as discussed earlier in this discussion, the Chance spell has all sorts of awesome effects though some of them have a very slim chance of actually happening. One of those does indeed allow you to buy a Sage's Stone if you're rich enough, but this would require a ton of luck.

7. Thanks Salvia. :) I think that members can submit ratings or reviews by clicking the stars. Someone really quickly wrote me a review early on (I think it was Firefly!) and I really appreciate any feedback that you might have to give.

Much appreciation for all of the patience and what a run toward 100%-ing this little obsession of mine! I hope you enjoyed it.

Dragon Warrior: Begin a New Quest

^^^ Absolutely listen to Firefly!

Something that a couple of my testers have done is draw a really careful map. The place is sprawling, one of the biggest dungeons in the game. It really helps to remember where you've tried/not tried to go, and where every door and stairway leads. Generally, every door and stairway is "geographically correct" meaning that they should lead to somewhere that makes sense on the next floor/screen, etc.

Good luck!

Dragon Warrior: Begin a New Quest

This is it sir!

A couple of pro tips:

The major thing that seems to get most people (and my playtesters) was her Staff attack. This is a lightning-elemental attack, and very few items offer lightning resistance. If you haven't already spent your medals, consider going to the Medal King's palace and investing in a Rubber Hat: These should dramatically reduce the damage you take from those attacks.

Second: Bounce, bounce, bounce. So useful. Throw a speed-boosting item on Catherine and get a Bounce spell up as quickly as possible and the old hag will do a lot of the work in bringing herself down.

Good luck! And remember, nothing could be as bad as the road to Rhone.

Hey BrainTemple (and fellow math major - always wonderful!),

Listen to Firefly - a veritable beacon of good knowledge. Hopefully that helps.

Thanks a bunch for the kind words. The total inspiration for this game came when it looked increasingly unlikely that we would see a DQX release in the west. What else can a frustrated DQ fan do but put together a game of his own and hope that people latch on?

Best of luck with the final sections of the game! Keep me in the loop with how you're doing. :)

Dragon Warrior: Begin a New Quest

Oh, no offense taken whatsoever! I'm under no illusions that my game won't be for everyone, but that's why there are thousands of 'em out there. If you ever do get back into it and you have any questions about anything, don't hesitate to ask me. :)

Dragon Warrior: Begin a New Quest

Hey Ryan, thanks for the input! I appreciate the notions and I agree that I like those features myself. I designed this to be a fan-game to specifically feel like the old NES games, and the NES Dragon Warrior games had black battle backgrounds (which I adopted, partly so that I had less graphics work to do!).

The dash is something that actually was in some of the testing versions, but eventually I took it out. It IS true that it isn't a feature of the original games, but that to me is a poor excuse... however, there are a couple of events that happen in the game now that do not trigger properly when dash is implemented. I believe that these are events where the game is checking to see in a particular loop whether your sprite is in contact with a particular tile, and when you can zoom past, there is a chance that this check doesn't happen properly. After investigating, I decided to remove this as a conscious decision.

While both of the above aren't going to change for any future releases of this game, they will definitely be implemented in future games that I make, just because of the kinds of games I want to make going forward. :)

Finally - I am not sure what options RPG Maker VX Ace has for fullscreen beyond the defaults! If you hit "F1" you can set it so that it launches in fullscreen instead, but I get the black band as well. I could look into some of the scripts and so on that people have used to obtain different fullscreen effects, though if any exist.

Thanks again!!

Dragon Warrior: Begin a New Quest

Nope, Catherine doesn't learn RobMagic - that Staff is exactly what I used myself, through the whole game. Note that after my own experience and that of a couple playtesters, I actually nerfed that staff severely from what it used to be, too... it used to ALSO restore MP every turn, but she was basically an infinite power plant of healing that way.

Dragon Warrior: Begin a New Quest

Hi Salvia!

So, it's a pretty complicated puzzle that spans multiple floors and pathways into the castle.

Generally speaking, you will need to:
-Make three different boulders appear using three switches
-Use the statue in the lower left of the "watery" screen" to either position them along the top row or along the bottom row.

I've hidden some more details below:

Two of the three switches you need are fairly straightforward to access from the main entrance. The third, however, is less straightforward, and it is referenced in a book that you can find in the study (near the healing point). If you travel outside the castle but on top of the mountain, you'll notice that there is a kind of fault in the ground separating you from the east side of the castle. Make your way across the mountain pass to travel to the upper right, on the opposite side of that fault. There is a secret entrance near one of the statues, and the coordinates are given in that book in the study. (I don't have them on me right at the moment!) That entrance will lead you to the third switch that you need.

Let me know if that helps!

Dragon Warrior: Begin a New Quest

Whoops, you're right! I missed the first possibility - edited the list. ;)
