Dragon Warrior: Begin a New Quest

Heya,

First of all, thanks for playing the game! I'm sorry that some things have been frustrating, but I'm happy to try and answer your questions and I hope that overall it's been a positive experience.

1 & 2. The third way in is guarded by the Red Dragons in the cave to Carnelia. If you go down the path that you're warned against going down, and fight against two sets of four Red Dragons, you will find stairs that lead to the third path. ON that path, you will find the ancient library that hosts a lot of flavoury history and many missing monster entries.

3. There are still a few recipes yet - the Brimstone Marble and Perfect Diamond are indeed used in the Alchemy Pot, one time apiece. Gold Bars are more useful, and can be used repeatedly at the end for the last recipe. Any extra Diamonds or Marbles you're lucky enough to find can be sold for a bunch of money.

As for your complaints...fair enough, but:

1: I'm pretty sure they only restored 1 HP in Dragon Warrior 2, but I understand. In any case, they were definitely meant to be used outside of battle chiefly, because they certainly do suck inside battle, I agree with you.

2: Bad luck? There is exactly a 1-in-11 chance for the Wizard's Ring to crumble with each use, so having them break quickly COULD happen, though it's unlikely.

3: I do like the way the Sun Crest works for that cave, because it's meant to invoke the Radiant Spell from DW1. Personal preference, though.

4: I can understand the criticism here, though to be fair many old puzzles, like the Eginbear rock puzzle or a couple of things in the pyramids in DW3, doesn't come with an explanation either. I am looking into writing an FAQ when I get the chance to accompany the game, though. :)

5: Bounce is certainly critical in the game. In playtesting, this wasn't the fight that my testers and I found super-hard though; it was the fight against Abraxis and his sentries that was absolutely nuts. The Rubber Hat (obtainable from the Medal King) does greatly reduce damage from Lightning magic. Note also that the hero tends to very quickly run out of MP, so if you can survive the first few turns, the battle typically becomes much easier after he is left with just his basic attacks.

6: There is a little bit of lore scattered throughout the game that hints at this, but it is tough to figure out how to access the innards of that dungeon, I agree. Again, this is something that an FAQ would be helpful for, but I'd like to point out that many other RPGs are "guilty" of having bonus/optional material that is tough to figure out with little or no direction (FFX, FFXII).

7: Yeah, it doesn't make sense. RPG Maker VX Ace has a really weird and unfortunate vehicle system where it designates what tiles any given vehicle *shall* be able to travel over and land on, and so I was limited - and I couldn't find a script to correct this either. I agree that this is a frustrating limitation that I actually specifically looked into solving but didn't come up with anything.

8: Point taken. It probably wouldn't be too hard to produce a blown-up image file with a few more details to help in navigation, but the included map is meant to sort of simulate the old-school crappy maps you'd receive in your instruction manual. Making stuff like that is really fun for me, though, so it might be a cool little project to include with a later update.

I really appreciate your feedback. Again, I hope that these issues haven't been too frustrating. It's been a long-winded labour of love, and all of your suggestions are well taken. Best of luck if you do decide to go seek out that library. :)

I'm so glad! You're coasting in toward the end. If you can find your way to the Last Refuge, Balghast's castle will not be far beyond. You're stuck with three people until you get there. Best of luck -- you don't have far to go now! :)

Dragon Warrior: Begin a New Quest

Wow, good for you!

First, I'll try and explain that cave. If you fall through the correct floors, you will fall into a different passageway and be able to collect that treasure chest. One "easy" way is to map out the region on a piece of paper. But the trick is that it isn't random at all: the pattern of skulls on the floor below tell you exactly where those pitfalls will appear on the floor above. :)

The next place to go in the story is to go back to the Underworld. If you haven't been to Branvaria castle yet, it is west of the Sun Shrine, and accessible by foot. At Branvaria, you can take a ferry and head toward the Dark God's castle!

While it is technically optional, I would recommend at this point that you take a look for the Life Crest, which you have probably heard about here and there. To find it, search the world using Ramia for some woods you haven't visited (near the fairy fountain) and then advance the Alchemy Pot sidequest a few steps.

Best of luck. You're almost there!

Wow, I really appreciate that!

Have you been to Nazrah and to Carnelia?

There is a major storyline section that you have to go through up on that plateau, where you'll figure out some major plot points, and you can access it once you have the final key and the Golden Pickaxe.

To get the Golden Pickaxe, look at the world map and find the island chain in the southeast part of the world. Visit it to learn some cool things about your main character's past and to obtain the Pickaxe; once you've obtained that, you are ready to go to Carnelia (and watch out, the monsters on the way are touuughhh!).

Good luck, let me know if you figure it out!

I remember seeing this game hosted back on the old Woodus Forums, I will definitely give this game a try when I can.

That would be amazing! If you do, Kaliesto, keep me in the loop with how it's going.

Thanks so much, and good job for getting so far!

It is indeed the fourth floor. "The square furthest from all stairs" is a little bit out of the way in the northwest area: Two steps to the west of the top of the northwestern pillar. You just need to search the square.

Good luck. :)

OK. First, make sure that you have revisited Anville and witnessed the events there, as should have been indicated after the Josephine battle.

It just occurred to me that in order to proceed, you MUST have the Cloak of Wind.

Once you're there, if you talk to everyone, you'll hear about a dwarf contingent that went off across the bridge to Carnelia. Head northeast from Anville. Instead of going into the cave you went through to get to Matarona, continue northwest along the coastline, and after a long walk, you'll come to another cave. Inside you won't be able to progress far, but you'll find Hammy the dwarf. He will briefly join you, and reward you upon returning home with the cloak.

Once you have the Cloak of Wind: Equip it and head east to the Devil's Horns. Go to the top of the west tower and leap off of it facing east. The cloak will cause you to fall much further to the right than usual, crossing the strait. From THERE, you have access to the eastern tower, or you can head far to the southeast, where you should find Elderwood (eventually).

Hopefully that helps a little more thoroughly. I am excited to put together an FAQ for this - eventually!

There's never a need to visit the east tower except for treasure -- and you can always "Return" or use a Wing to get back to the other side, if you ever need to. The next place to go is to venture east and south until you find Elderwood. :)

Dragon Warrior: Begin a New Quest

All right, next stop for you will be Elderwood. It's a long walk, but head far to the southwest, past the ruined town in the swamp (you'll head there later). They will give you some direction as to what you must do next.

On your trip there, follow the advice of the wizard in the tower: Stick to the forests on the coast, because in the plains in the area, the encounters will be pretty challenging until you gain a couple more levels.

The east tower: Which one? The Devil's Horns, or the one in the snow near Fortier Castle? The east tower of the Devil's Horns really doesn't have much at all in it outside of some monster entries and treasure, if you're looking for something more special.
