There's nothing wrong with random encounters. It is a perfectly viable system.
Provided normal rat enemies don't leave your party reeling for potions and elixirs after every battle. If the frequency of random battles in games is too high then it's not acceptable IMO.

I think Scribbles meant people just basically set their bar too high (often to the level of commercial games) not that their comparing RM games to retail ones.

Hmm is that all you beta tested? A good beta tester plays a wide range of games including the dire ones or at least that's what I thought.

Sounds interesting but I seriously want a 5-star suite if that package is going to cost an arm and a leg.

Unlike, 2k, 2k3, and XP where you can import loads and loads of chipsets/tilesets. In VX, I think you're stuck with just one set of tilesets.
That's silly, I'm sure you can import more resources if you wanted to. I had a go on a trail version but I didn't see if that was the case though.
I'm going with VX unless what Jakester said is true.
