20 mins in photoshop and I didn't even have to get out of bed. If you can find a better font it will be even better. Btw you can get photoshop cs2 for free and it's better than gimp.

Spriting is the best option in my opinion if you are up to it. Also don't forget that music can be used to convey emotions pretty well.
