haha - glad you found it interesting :) it was a 2-day project, and I didn't want to waste time on graphics and things, and instead dive right into all the "real" content: the dialog, etc

Super RMN Bros. 2

ah, I got impatient and downloaded a couple levels to give them a try in advance. of the ones I happened to try, I really liked Solitayre's levels, and am now even more impatient for the completed project :) this may not have been a very RPGish event, but it introduced me to SMBX - which has turned out to be awesome - and seems to have created some awesome work, so... yeah! I look forward to it, that's all :P heh

Small World

hm. I'm not sure what would cause that, but I am by no means an RPG Maker expert. maybe someone else here can tell us more.

I did have to do a little trickery to get the game to start up in windowed mode. if full screen mode has always given you better performance, though, it's easy to switch between windowed and full screen mode: the key combination ALT+ENTER should do the trick.

Small World Review

I do want to say that there is a sort of end/objective to this game, but I fully admit that the game's biggest failing may be that it does not guide you to that end, or even giving you any indication of progress toward it!

I tried to make the discovery of the statues the obvious goal, by changing the music when you find one, offering to save the game, etc... making a big deal about it, basically :P and when/if you find every statue, you will be taken to a place where everyone thanks you for saving the world (even if they never tell you how :P) but the game never makes you stop playing, which I know also throws people... "did I win, or didn't I?" it's confusing.

I think another part of the problem is that I created a game that defied many expectations... in an RPG, people often look for battles, inventory, spells, leveling-up, etc, and I threw many of those conventions right out the window (and then tossed it at people looking for an RPG :P) and instead tried to create a game which focuses on exploration, not on fighting... and I may have not executed it very well.

whatever the reasons, there is a definite consensus among reviewers so far that the game was lacking, and I can't dispute that they're probably on to something :P

anyway, thanks for the review! I'm happy if I was at least able to give people an uncommon game-play experience that wasn't abysmal; maybe even occasionally amusing :P I'll definitely keep your guys' thoughts on the game in mind when working on future projects :)

(P.S. I'm glad you liked the mapping! it's an aspect I spent a lot of time on, and I guess it shows.)

(P.P.S. the cow's great weight allows you to activate switches on the ground :P)

Small World Review

ooh! neat to see a review for my game :)

I hate to disappoint you, however, in that if I do work on Small World more, it will never be to add battles. I am working on a more-traditional RPG that does include battles (no promises on when that might be done), but I don't feel that battles have a place in Small World, and so I actively avoided them.

I would like to add more of a story, however. I do wonder if you found the fairy woods where everyone thanks you for saving the world (even if they never tell you how you did so!) but this game was also an experiment, and the goal of that experiment was to create a world where the focus is on exploration and player-created story more than an explicitly-given plot. it would be fair to say, however, that this concept is simply not fun, or that my attempt at creating a game using this concept was not a success :P perhaps if the player could build something other than a party - if there were more ways for the player to create their own story in general - then the game would have had been better.

these are all things I will keep in mind for future projects, or even future additions to Small World, if I make any.

anyway, thanks for the review! I'm glad I at least succeeded in introducing you to a new and different game-play experience, even if I unfortunately disappointed you in other respects. I'll try harder next time :P

ha-ha - and I find this entire conversation hilarious :P

Small World

yes, sorry: I was waiting for the game's submission to be approved. or could I have uploaded a download while waiting? I'm new to rpgmaker.net, and not very familiar with the system.

anyway, I've uploaded the game... the file lists as "pending". hopefully it's available soon :)
