Characters + monsters.
If your game has staid mechanics, you will have character options with staid roles. Trying to force new roles into the same old mechanics will probably not be very productive. Does your game have any unusual mechanics? If not, maybe you should introduce some and then build new character options around them.

I don't know if you pick up a newspaper or watch the first five minutes of a newscast or turn on public radio like . . . it's pretty hard to avoid . . .
Unless you really really ignore all news and current events which is pretty typical for people under 30.

Xenogears, I just got it last night and now I'm grinding and I'm still at Dazil. Must...get...deathblows...
Even if you learn a deathblow you can't use it until you are at a high enough level. I recommend you stop grinding because you will not get to a high enough level to use the cool deathblows until late in the game.
