Let's Try!
I think it's a great idea. Actually getting to watch over someones shoulder as they're playing your game is probably the most valuable way to locate design flaws and weaknesses. I think often times when I'm playing games I wind up getting stuck in places the designer never intended, but just failed to foresee. RPG battles for example often play out very differently with a real player than with the developer simply because they don't have the foresight of knowing it's abilities and weaknesses. Stuff often has a habit of being harder than anyone actually intends it to be.
Plus I think actually seeing someone struggle with your design is probably a lot less antagonizing than someone telling you they struggled with your game design in a review. So for those that have thinner skin and get defensive at the first sign of critique, it'd probably be a lot better way of pointing out issues with their game to them.

The RMN Comic Collaboration - Act 2
Heh, I know what you mean. I had to follow up on one of those splash pages this time around and they are pretty rough.
I think it's mostly just an internal struggle from being an artist rather than the comic though. The goal of these comics is to be an incoherent mess, where people, places, and things are supposed to get lost in translation due to people wielding the uncompromising power of MSPaint in all it's glory. Under normal conditions all those things are colossal errors. So it sort of becomes more of a battle with your own artistic ego to actually lower your own standards temporarily, than the rules themselves being the challenge.
Honestly it's been excruciatingly difficult for me both times I've submitted something. It really pushes me in a way I'm not used to though, so I find it really fun.

Players x Experts - Our attitude on playing games
post=153799post=153744Completely false and WIP has the site stats to prove it.
@Illustrious: I'd wager less than 10% of people who visit this site are gamers who have no intention to design their own game.
Web stats can't track people's intentions.
The RMN Comic Collaboration - Act 2
RMN was down or something so I couldn't pass it on, but better late than never (gave me some time to color mine this time too) ~
Controversy: Which FF game ruined the series?
I haven't liked the direction they've taken past FF6 myself. I wouldn't claim any of them have ruined the series though. It's easily one of the most successful video game franchises in history, and it's still going strong. It's kinda like trying to pick out when they ruined the Mario series. :/
Pretentious Bullshit and Missing the Point: The Sequel to the Game to the Movie
post=152943post=152928This isn't really what I meant, ftr. Making something arbitrarily offensive doesn't inherently bother me. I'm not really the kind of person that gets OFFENDED by shock value crap. I certainly don't mind people making games about it.
To me those sort of games are identical to stuff like the images in the iScribble thread here. It's just juvenile low-brow blue humor. It's existence has no real affect upon anything, so I never understand why people go into fake outrage mode upon discovering them.
Just... Don't pretend it has some deep meaningful metaphysical value or some crap.
Ah I gotcha. I haven't actually played the game, nor even heard of it previously. I just saw the contest it won, which clearly doesn't take itself that seriously so assumed it was just typical 4chan garbage. If it's like a video game equivalent of a Jackson Pollock painting, then yeah that'd probably annoy me.

Anyway, I think Dildo Tank the First Squirt should have won that contest on it's name alone.

Bummer. :'(
In the future you should get yourself a Dropbox account. Free 2gig space, and it handles syncing for you. Hope it didn't set you back too far.

So a talented artist is planning on immortalizing a scene from FFVII into a comic. Check it out!

We'll see what happens. I don't think we're getting the comic actually REAL LIFE published. As far as the commission, if he's doing all the footwork, I really don't expect him to do it for free. 500 bones is a lot of cash, but if the finished product is worth that much, then well, he earned it. It's not crazy for artists to be paid for doing art, yeah?
It's just something we're/he's doing for the love of the fandom. It is a FFVII site after all.
Ah I see, your first post led me to think it was to physically be printed at the end. I'm an artist (who gets paid for art) - So I certainly wasn't arguing against compensating him for his work. I was just saying he has to be careful when taking payment for unlicensed material openly. "Donation" with a wink wink nudge nudge is how some people get away with it.
Also if he's not aware David Finch has some really good comic book penciling DVDs over at Gnomon. His anatomy ones in particular are really good.
Edit here's a link if you want to pass it along.
