I guess it's just because you have to build a foundation of stuff to get the game going. I'm alternating between writing the script, drawing icons, drawing battle animations, and mapping, and it feels like I'm just crawling along at this point XD;

For me, it's everything you just said, but with the added fear of the unknown future. If this is something I'm willing to put all this time and effort into, it'd freak me out if real life gets in the way and forces me to cancel the game.
My solution is just to sleep less at night to work on the game. Can't really recommend that, though.

If I'm really geared for the project then I find the beginnings easier, personally.
It's about mid-way for me when I have done all this work and have a stable/playable game when I start to slow down. And I think that's because I get content and start play testing what I have rather than continue working on it.

I mean, I don't draw icons, animations, or what-have-you, but, I totally understand how slow it can be to get things together! Also, I tend to procrastinate ten times harder when a game doesn't have a gamepage yet. Though, I might be thinking of a very specific example *cough*Nakaishi Wars*cough* with this!

I guess the super-early part is really easy for me, yeah, because I'm super-driven by enthusiasm for the new project. I've kind of reached the place where some of that enthusiasm isn't so super-strong and I realize I have a lot of work to do. But I feel like if I keep moving forward, I'll be fine ^_^

Yeah, very true! I think another part that feels really slow is when the end of the game is in sight, but you can tell it'll be several months at least to get it done.

Haha, I find getting a gamepage to be a big motivating factor as well. It's like showing the world that the project exists and that you're working on it, and that fact helps with motivation.

Haha, I find getting a gamepage to be a big motivating factor as well. It's like showing the world that the project exists and that you're working on it, and that fact helps with motivation.
I know for me getting a gamepage up is the best way to motivate me and keep me fired up. I worked on my current project for a good deal before I did a gamepage and it was stale for awhile until I came back to it with vigor, put up a gamepage, finished the first episode and now I'm getting helpful feedback and comments which really drives me to continue and push forward!

I'm the opposite: I love doing all the prep work, it's the actual gam mak bits that're a pain.

This is partly why I lack the patience to create a game myself, even though I studied game design back in my school days. Still, I feel like I want to contribute a game of sort on this website, so that's when game translation came to mind (which doesn't take as much effort as creating a game, but still has quite some effort involved).
If anything, though, I suppose if you want to start creating a new game, it depends on which one is already in your mind beforehand: gameplay, story, setting etc. If you already have, say the story in mind in the beginning, then you should focus on creating the story first. Likewise for the rest.

Doing a whole complete translation for a single game, not to mention multiple ones, is a pretty daunting, so I think you definitely contribute a ton ^_^

I've been restarting so much that my body now goes on 'auto-pilot' during the earliest stages. It's not necessarily a good thing :(
@unity: Hmm, probably an RPG/platformer that focuses on exploration, setting and story. The kind of game that makes the players actually get immersed in the game world (like every town having its own distinct diversity) and also feel like they're actually in the game. Oh, and has some decent gameplay challenge as well.
Sounds kinda vague, I know, but that's roughly the kind of game I would have wanted to go for :P
