Description

Game Chill is a winter game making contest, the goal of which is to make a game in a little over three weeks. Entries will be commented on by a quartet of judges and ranked accordingly. A simple theme is given, but the point is to just have fun making games!

THEME
Design a single winter-themed dungeon for the player to navigate through.

You are required to include in this game at least 3 items from the following list, in some way, shape or form:
  • Gingerbread Men
  • Prayer
  • Frosty the Snowman's hat
  • Hockey
  • Fancy dinner party
  • Bing Crosby

RULES
  • The contest starts now (December 19th, 2013) and goes until January 9th at 11:59pm GMT. Entries must be made during this time-frame. Existing games and projects are not eligible entries for this event.
  • Only completed games are allowed
  • Teams of any size may work together to create a game.
  • All art, music, and sound should be original, public domain or purchased by yourself. When you made it is not important so long as you have proper rights to it. Entrants may stray from this rule if they wish, but should expect harsher judgments towards ripped content than original.
  • Your game must run on the Windows platform. Your game should not require any additional components that a judge would have to purchase or download.
  • Games should come with a readme.txt file of some sort, describing how to play the game, listing any resources used that are not yours, and describing what components the game needs to run.
  • At the end of the contest, 4 judges will rank each game using their own scoring system, and provide commentary for the entries. The final outcome will be determined by the judges. A winner and a runner-up will be selected.
  • Entries not submitted by the end time will not be accepted.
  • Extensions might be possible, but will be granted only by popular vote and judge approval (ie. don't rely on it). If extensions are given, they will apply to everyone, for fairness. If an extension does occur it will be only a few days at most.
  • Your game can be of any genre, not just RPG. (You don't need to have battles, for example!)

HOW TO PARTICIPATE
  • Step 1: Sign up for the contest in the "Registration" section below this event description. You can enter this event solo or as a team. Additionally, you may submit as many games or join as many teams as you'd like.
  • Step 2: Create your game page. Normal submission rules apply.
  • Step 3: Post your download to the game page once it's approved.
  • Step 4: Submit your game download to the contest by using the commands on the upper-right corner of this page.

PRIZES
All participants who successfully submit a valid entry to the event will receive a participation achievement worth 50ms. The winner will receive an additional 100ms achievement for being so awesome. (Hey, not every event needs hundreds of dollars in prizes! This event is "old school RMN".)

Good luck and merry Christmas!

Whoa! Less than a week left! How are all the games coming along?
I've almost started!

I haven't started either. I wish I could say it was because I am busy, but it's mostly because I am lazy.

First draft of Frosty boss :3

Haha, love how that kid's head is sticking out. :D

I'll post a game profile this weekend, need to tweak a few things before that though.
Thanks for Avee.
This is message from alexstoneart.

Now, My question is "Can I put Game Chill 2013 logo in my game?".
Thanks, Craze!

Yeah, I only noticed just recently when I took a closer look at the banner that there was a kid in his mid section. I think I'm going to play with the idea that it's- oops, spoiler ;P

I'll be sure to put a link to him in my game. I would say his reply answers your question. You did put that exact question in the your message to him.
Mine's about to be uploaded soon. Though there are a couple more days to the deadline, my personal schedule has reached the maximum capacity as far as days I get to work on this. It's definitely been fun though!

I have a couple lukewarm feelings around the current build, to get allegorical I feel as if I've made a high quality canvas. A canvas might be impeccable, but it could matter very little if nothing is drawn on it. I think it may be because I wasn't quite ready to take any risky moves throughout the process. I know there was some discussion on what defines a dungeon, but I feel my game in its current state does take a more conventional route. I guess it's understandable because I wanted to ensure that the conventions functioned on their own, little did I know that it may be just as taxing to do even just that with my inexperience.

Anyway, as seen on the Game Profile, I've already put some forethought into what further developments I'd like to make after the contest is over to bring the project to its full potential.

Anyway, stay tuned! I just got to make some last minute checkups and then the game should be live!
I like that banner a hundred times. Your spriting is beautiful.
So how exactly does this process work again? Do judges begin analysis of a game upon its publication date or upon the contest's deadline?

The question's a little nitpicky, but I'm just curious in the possibility of "early sentiments." It's honestly nothing I'd get paranoid over, but since I'm generally new to RMN, I think it be wise to look into any of the site's formalities or etiquette.

I think early-release entries were played as they got released during All Hallows Eve 2013 (I definitely recall the mess-load of reviews that Formar did), but my own preference is to start playing them when the submission period concludes.

Lol, clearly I'm waiting for a common ground date for all entries to receive the maximum potential from their first impression. To accommodate this, if we can get an extension to 2024 that'd be great.

...

yeah ignore me too...

...also I released my game...
Well, since I am never going to make this, I might as well reveal what I would have made had I had time/devotion/motivation/time management skills:

The Imaginarium Kids in "There's Snow Stopping Us Now!"

The story was going to revolve around three kids off on an imaginative adventure to "Snow Mountain". Despite going together, each kid has a distinctive idea of what the adventure was about. The headstrong girl insists that she is a Princess with her two retainers, a brave knight and a wise scribe, and were there to save the Dwarves' dinner party - their golden plates were stolen by mischievious goblins who took them deep into the mountain! The brash older boy says that they are a clan of ninjas there to retrieve a mystical harp from the Ice Dragon so that they may free their village from the grips of winter. The quiet boy says that they are scientists investigating strange happenings at the mountain and discover an ancient alien spacecraft and an impending invasion! With them is the girl's dog Pupcake who, depending on the adventure, takes on different roles himself (a fierce dog, a spirit wolf, or a robot dog).

After 3 brief "levels" introducing each of the kid's adventure, they have arguments on whose story to follow. So between each level you get to decide who wins and that determines the next floor's theme. Skills and equipment found in one theme would transfer to another, so by the end you could be a wizard ninja wielding a laser rifle if you like! At the end, they discover that all of the problems were the machinations of an evil Frosty and his magic top hat.

In real life most of their "equipment" is just refashioned hockey sticks and toy weapons and garbage can lid shields.

So that's what I was going to attempt to do. Naturally, I never got to it.

E:
@XthemeCore - go ahead and feel free to use the logo!
Starting to worry about the time limit - only 5 days to go! Here are my main characters, three heroes, one villain.

To be honest, outside of their character sets and a couple of autotiles for mapping, I haven't done a whole lot

That's sort of where I'm at. I have charsets and a handful of tiles. Although I did make a very basic "caterpillar" system, character switching, and the girl can throw snowballs. Oh and you can push a small snowball through thick snow and it becomes larger xD

It doesn't help that I keep playing FFxiv
Link_2112 and Sam, you never cease to amaze me with your remarkable spriting skills. :)

I’m getting excited now! ONLY LESS THAN FIVE DAYS TO GO!!! COME ON; LET’S GO, EVERYBODY – MOVE YOUR ASSES!!!

Once that virtual clock hits January 10th, 12:00 A.M., that’s when Addit and co. get busy.
@Marrend & Addit
Thanks for the feedback! I didn't want to submit so early, it felt like going in head-first; but the pressure has built up for this upcoming week with other obligations. Seeing as that pretty much seals the deal as far as me being able to put any more work into it, I went ahead and submit it anyway. Sorry if it's starting to look like I'm saturating the thread here, I just get a little hyped when it comes to these "first impression" type things. I suppose I'll just try to rest easy now.

As for the rest of you, instead of seeing 5 days as a looming deadline, maybe see it as 5 days advantage over me! (Whatever that's worth to you.) I'm really excited to see the turnout at the end of it all, and as always wish you all the best!
Well, I got something done and I am waiting for my profile approval so I can upload my download :3
It is not a big thing but hopefully fun

Same here! Well, minus a download.
Not sure I'll be able to finish the game before the deadline ends, but I'll try!

@Kentona: That sounds really cool, but also like quite a bit of work. :P
Making it so that the kids, and not the player, decide what theme's coming next would reduce the workload quite a bit though. Do that and you can still make it!
Not many days left and so much left to do!
