Description

Game Chill is a winter game making contest, the goal of which is to make a game in a little over three weeks. Entries will be commented on by a quartet of judges and ranked accordingly. A simple theme is given, but the point is to just have fun making games!

THEME
Design a single winter-themed dungeon for the player to navigate through.

You are required to include in this game at least 3 items from the following list, in some way, shape or form:
  • Gingerbread Men
  • Prayer
  • Frosty the Snowman's hat
  • Hockey
  • Fancy dinner party
  • Bing Crosby

RULES
  • The contest starts now (December 19th, 2013) and goes until January 9th at 11:59pm GMT. Entries must be made during this time-frame. Existing games and projects are not eligible entries for this event.
  • Only completed games are allowed
  • Teams of any size may work together to create a game.
  • All art, music, and sound should be original, public domain or purchased by yourself. When you made it is not important so long as you have proper rights to it. Entrants may stray from this rule if they wish, but should expect harsher judgments towards ripped content than original.
  • Your game must run on the Windows platform. Your game should not require any additional components that a judge would have to purchase or download.
  • Games should come with a readme.txt file of some sort, describing how to play the game, listing any resources used that are not yours, and describing what components the game needs to run.
  • At the end of the contest, 4 judges will rank each game using their own scoring system, and provide commentary for the entries. The final outcome will be determined by the judges. A winner and a runner-up will be selected.
  • Entries not submitted by the end time will not be accepted.
  • Extensions might be possible, but will be granted only by popular vote and judge approval (ie. don't rely on it). If extensions are given, they will apply to everyone, for fairness. If an extension does occur it will be only a few days at most.
  • Your game can be of any genre, not just RPG. (You don't need to have battles, for example!)

HOW TO PARTICIPATE
  • Step 1: Sign up for the contest in the "Registration" section below this event description. You can enter this event solo or as a team. Additionally, you may submit as many games or join as many teams as you'd like.
  • Step 2: Create your game page. Normal submission rules apply.
  • Step 3: Post your download to the game page once it's approved.
  • Step 4: Submit your game download to the contest by using the commands on the upper-right corner of this page.

PRIZES
All participants who successfully submit a valid entry to the event will receive a participation achievement worth 50ms. The winner will receive an additional 100ms achievement for being so awesome. (Hey, not every event needs hundreds of dollars in prizes! This event is "old school RMN".)

Good luck and merry Christmas!

This is as far as we can go <:3c
Just to clear up some confusion, do we have to include the RTP in the download or can we omit it for the sake of space/practicality? (I'm thinking of vx ace in particular)
I'm all for not including the RTP (as I have it installed and it seriously bloats the file size), but I'd wait for the other judges to weigh in. If possible, I'd suggesting just including the parts of the RTP you used. I doubt you used all of the animations or all of the music, and that's what really adds up.

I'd love it if I didn't have to include the RTP, but <shinan weighs in here>.

also i guess my game is just mine now, because karsu and I's project got waylaid when i was injured. and now i think i might be coming down with mono.

don't expect anything too big or polished is what i'm saying, i only started this "oh shit" project this morning XD

(karsu and I are going to do our original idea in a month or so though. if my head ever cooperates with me ever again)

I already posted what I think. Though, to paraphrase, I think including the RTP is necessary for this event (even it it causes a crap-ton of bloat), but on the off-chance that the other judges don't agree with me (one already is), the option to have an alternate download without the RTP is permissible.
I do agree that in practice I like all game files to be standalone and not require additional downloads, but the problem is people don't take the time to add the RTP, and then remove all the extra files. I very much doubt that a lot of games that include the entire RTP use every single file from it.

I generally put in files I know I'll need and rename them when I actually use them. The exception are sounds and animations though, because I use almost all animations in a given game and I don't have the time in a contest game to go through and try the game without all the sounds I think I didn't use.

Unfortunately, those are the two biggest bloat sources. XD

The best bet will probably be to include the RTP for the people who don't have it, and do the best you can to remove excess files... but yea - it's a jam game and time is of the essence, so don't fret too much. It's personally not gonna bother me either way, pretty sure I have the RTP installed.

Also, in an ironic twist of fate, Michigan is waylaid with a "Polar Vortex" a.k.a. legal buttload of snow, so I guess I'll have a lot of extra time to judge games?
I'm new to using Ace. If a game doesn't use any RTP, what would I need to do to provide a download that doesn't need RTP installed or packaged?

That sounds awfully familiar, and I'm pretty sure I'm still waiting for that halloween game you and Karsuman (supposedly) worked on!

@Link:
Include the Fonts (the one you use AND VL-Gothic-Regular.ttf) in a seperate folder, and change this line RTP=RPGVXAce in Game.ini to RTP=.
That's everything I think.

Edit: Here's Frosty from my game!

Due to time contraints, he probably won't turn evil at the end (spoiler alert!). :(

That Frosty's so cuuutteee!!

Byah, that was LouisCyphre and I. His grandmother got robbed so he went to stay with her for a bit and help her out, which understandably took up a lot of his time. Serenity may or may not ever happen. =X (No, it wasn't a Firefly fangame XD )

As for this time... see below:

(text: "I fell on Stephen/Craze and knocked him five feet into a truck. (And I have no remorse.")

Wasn't able to do or concentrate on anything for a week. My arms were stretched out in shock and my hands slammed into the truck, making them sore forever (on top of a shake I already have lol). Not to mention the slight dent in my forehead...

Ouch...someone, or something, doesn't want you to mak gams for contests it seems. :(
Hope you get better soon/are already fine enough for that oh shit project (don't make it 378932789 hours long this time please :P).

Oh right, it was LouisCyphre last time. I guess the lesson to be learned here is to not enter contests with cursed people. :P

Pretty much this. I keep forgetting just how big the VX Ace RTP is compared to the 2k3 one. >_<
Mine's up, submitted and available for download! ("Bleak" for those who are interested in looking a bit into the competition ^^) Good luck to everyone!
I'm the artist that did the banner art, and I made an account just to tell you that this is glorious.

I had to do this :D

Ok, cool, did the .ini thing.

With the fonts, do I make a folder called Fonts and put it along side Audio and Graphics? I seem to remember playing some games that had it like that. Or do I put it next to the .exe and they have to right click/install?

I didn't get to anything related to font or dialogue, but I would like to have a pixel looking font. Would I grab that Gothic font from the RTP and include it in my download?

I'm glad you approve!

Yes, the font goes in a folder named Font alongside Audio/Graphics/etc. If it's in that folder, the user doesn't even need to install the font to view the text in game.

Example from Wine & Roses. You can put any fonts the game uses in there, and the game will utilize them without them needing to be installed on the PC the game is being played on. =)

As for my project, Czarina Must Die, it's coming along! Hopefully won't need to trim it too much. It's still pretty ridiculous (in that it knows full well i'm making it in a short period of time), but it's both linear and doesn't give you the full party up front, making it pretty different from most of my games. =0
*Silently vibrates with impatience to be able submit*
So, call me insane but I'm switching development to RM2k3 and going on a major push tonight and tomorrow night to actually make something!

Question, deadline is midnight 09 Jan 2014, but what time zone?
