Description

Some of you might not know what a Release Something! Day (RS!D) is. Basically, it's a day where you release something - anything! - in order to get feedback from the community.

Release Something! Days used to be a regularly occurring events back when the community had a problem with releasing stuff. It was created as a way to encourage sharing, collaboration, feedback, and content in the community. The aim is to truly try to capture the spirit of releasing something.

It is not about prepping a major release, or making something in a fury to have something new to show for the event. It is about showing your works-in-progress, getting feedback, and checking out what other people are working on. Like a snapshot of RMN's development community.

WHATTA RELEASING?
Music, tiles, sprites, graphics of any type, gameplay (videos of gameplay tests are good), tech demos, demos - even completed games (but don't strive for a finished product; that's not the point of RS!D).

GOTTA HAVE RULES
- To 'Release Something' just upload it straight to this event page. Sign in/up, then hit 'Submit' in the top right corner of the page and browse until you find the file you want to 'Release'. Voila~
- You can release more than one thing, but try to make sure it's something you've been working on at least recently (say, in the last month or so). Keep it relevant!
- Release all through the weekend.
- DO NOT steal the things you see here, if someone wants feedback on a resource or script. I doubt we have to say it, but it's worth saying just in case someone uses the 'but you never said...' shit to justify being a fuckwit.
- To give feedback, use @username and then hide tags (depending on length and amount of feedbacks in post. So, for example:

@Liberty
[hide]this page is pretty awesome but hey, I think you need to work on your logo making abilities because holy shit giiiiirl[/hide]

GOTTA GET GOODIES
There will be a badge worth 10 MS for releasing something. One per person.
Best feedback givers will also get a badge worth 20 MS. Because the feedback is what counts most!

Just to re-iterate: You are releasing something :ANYTHING: that you have done on your project over the last month or two. It can be a screenshot, a face image, planned dialogue, a script snippit, a resource, a demo (if you have one on hand) or a video of a system or anything like that. It does not have to be something that you whip up over this weekend - in fact, it's HIGHLY ENCOURAGED that you NOT do that! Just dump something in! Or a few somethings!

GO GO GO GO GO GO GOTTA GO FASTER!!!!

They told me I was mad when I said I was going to create a spidertable. Who’s laughing now!!!

@Ziggy
It's a modern-day investigation game involving events from several periods in history. It'll be quite a while before I have any sort of gameplay, sadly; I'm working on all the bajillion documents and images it needs, since the game itself is primarily finding those and making connections.

Moar stuffs! Attack animations shouldn't be so cute! AND OMG THAT FAIRY BATTLER IS FANTASTIC!

@Sated
I do likes me a good skill chain. LMAO at bitch-slap and diatribe!

@Novalux
I'm afraid what you've done here won't work. With just the game file, it has no way to search it's settings or file system. It can't be just dropped into a project folder either. You have go into your project, select compress file data, choose RTP or No-RTP and then it will create an executable that you can upload to the net.

@Donut
This looks so neat! But I'm not sure I understand? They're cute little animal sprites, but when they interact, they're human?

@Ziegfried_McBacon: I'm glad you enjoyed them! Thank you so much!
@Kylaila: I know what you mean, most of the graphics here are just placeholders, especially the mugshots and the dungeon graphics. I'm still waiting for a friend of mine to finish making them. This is not the most recent build btw, now the FP-dungeon is fully coded and CBS as well (which is not the case in this GIF). I only have a few bosses left.

@planotm: as I said to Kylaila, mugshots are placeholders. The final mugshots will be animals =)

THanks for the comments!

@pooperflooper, I like your watercolor and the character looks pretty funky (in a fun way). I'd suggest trying some anti-aliasing, or at least softening, on your edges, though, or at least not using that super-deep black. The edges of stuff like the fridge doesn't look so hot.
@zDS's feedback
Heh, why not all three? Thanks! If I get the mechanics of the game just how I want it I think it could really turn out to be something special.

@Kylaila's feedback
Yeah, the battle layout is a work in progress. Still trying to find a way to cohesively bring it all together. I would like to have a more pixelated faceset for the player's character to use but I'm no artist so I'd have to get someone to do it for me. We'll see what happens.

@kr0x's feedback
Say whhhhaaaaattt? I love the font I chose. Gives it a silly, comic book feel. Pistols at dawn madam. :P But yeah, I like how the game looks as well. Clashes with the content of the game well.

@lrog's feedback
Thanks! Though I am just using the Old School Modern tilepack with some edits here and there. I customized some more policemen and such. But thanks!

@Thunder176's feedback
Yeah, that was something I noticed myself as well and it has mentioned by quite a few people here. The facesets I have now were meant to be placeholders when I threw them together anyway so we'll see what happens. Thanks for the feedback.

@Lucy_Fox's feedback
Thanks! The simple look works well with what I have planned for the project. Hmm. I can see what you're talking about with the menu color. I'll have to see if I can do something about that.

@Zero3D's feedback
Thanks for the kind words! Yup a mouse system. Works pretty well too! Players will be able to play with either it or the keyboard whichever they prefer.

@Liberty's feedback
Yeah, I'm planning on doing something different with the battle system. THe player can either kill, arrest or talk down criminals in battle with more experience and rewards for the latter two. Should be an interesting system if I can get the mechanics how I want them. And what, you've never heard of a special-T made carpet before? <.< >.> Those barristas knew what what they were signing up for when they got the job. Thanks for the feedback!

@Ratty524's feedback
True, the black bar is a bit of of place. I was originally going to have it always be at the top but I feel it should only be there for investigation modes now. And yeah, the resolution from the mouse and menu icons is off but also kind of a side effect of the scripts I'm using. I don't you know of an icon set that features larger 2x2 pixel icons would you? Because I'm kind of stuck using the 1x1 pixel icon sets that are out there since they have the most variety. I can probably find a way to edit the mouse script from Shaz to display larger icons to see how that looks to make it mesh more but chances are this'll be the best I can do unfortunately... And don't even get me started on that font size! It seems to randomly resize itself depending on what I name the object it's hovering over. Very annoying and I can't seem to find a way to fix it. Rabble rabble. Thanks for the feedback Ratty!

@Housekeeping's feedback
Thank for the kind words sir! I can't take credit for the tiles and sprites since they're all from the Old School Modern tilepack and I just make edits here and there to increase their versatility. Though I feel the pack gets a bad rap since I've found it easy enough to make some cool looking maps. Hopefully I can get the mechanics of the game fully fleshed out to compliment the great art style.

@MakioKuta's feedback
Heh. I strive to surprise people's expectations like that. And yeah, when I used the face generator they were always meant to be placeholders while I think of how I want the faces to look. I'll see if I can't find someone to help "art them up" for me since my spritework is the weakest sauce. Anyway, thanks for the kind words!
@pianotm: I meant that you should try to write more complex and varied rhythms. The problem with ostinato through an entire song is that (for me at least), the ear can fixate on it. This might only be an issue for some musicians, though. I know my roommate (who is a drummer) would find it aggravating.

I was writing the critiques as I was listening, so sorry if it was confusing. My two criticisms are I'd like to hear more complex rhythms and hearing a similar ostinato in three songs felt too samey.
More random feedback. I couldn't get around to everyone since I was practically
flooded with notices today. Thanks for the feedback so far. I've already started
tweaking stuff then I'll look at nixing the super-dark outlines.

@Libby: I like the simplicity there; the sprite kind of reminds me of a realistic-sized Minecraft character. XD I'd imagine the low saturation works as well for this pixel-art style. But it's still nice to see fellow gam devs try their hand at custom art now. ^^

@Ocean/Archeia/Pizza: And it's pixel art like yours that inspires me to do better. :D Can't really find a single fault there. Love the vibrancy of the colour palette and that level of detail is just :o.

@Kylalia: Interesting, looking at your sketches. It looks like you do a very rough lineart to get the movement and feel of those battlers ( if that's what they'll become ) but even in those early stages, I can still make out distinct figures.

@Lucy_Fox: Looks like your game will eventually rival Star Stealing Prince in terms of visual eye-candy soon enough. ^^ I just hope there are plenty of nice maps to walk around and explore though.

@Housekeeping Ah, I understand now! So something more like this? (No Libby, I'm not using this for this event).

Because I specifically abandoned this type of musical prose specifically because I'm writing video game music and deliberately trying to be repetitive. I agree with you completely. I keep wanting to change rhythm, but I've been stopping short because I worry about making tracks overlong, or making them too unwieldy to loop.

EDIT: As a matter of fact, you'll notice that Silent Space seems to cut short abruptly. This is because I wrote a new rhythm and decided to make a new song out of it that Silent Space could lead into.

thanks for telling me that. kinda new at this.
I just submitted some screens from the new version of Mystic Guardians, that I will be releasing soon hopefully. Can't post the demo it's not done yet.

@Ziegfried, Yeah, I 'll add more stuff to the dungeons once I finish a few things. The screenshots for the launcher automatically picked up the Greek language (I was born and I live in Greece, so my laptop's OS language is set to Greek) so it shows that instead of English. Although there is an English translation (which is already on the demo I've uploaded here.
@Housekeeping, I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for the tip.

Over to feedback giving:
@Rose_Guardian, pretty neat stuff.
@Archeia, You me and others impressed. Keep up the good work.

The FirstScene is very nice and I like where you're going with it, but the characters are awkward to look at. First, the child is a bit strangely proportioned. This can probably be fixed by turning his shoulder's a bit more towards the person carrying him. Also, the hero's arms and hands are badly disjointed here. You wouldn't see the arm coming up under the shoulders. You would only see the wrist and hand bending over. The way you've got it makes it look like his wrist is severely broken. Also, you should be able to see the man's sleeve cut off by the kid's head. The way it is now makes his shoulder's look lopsided. Finally, his hands seem oddly flattened. (Arm positioning and hand dimensions are a problem I have, also.) You should get a drawing puppet. They're only 20 bucks at most art stores. You could probably get one for some change online. When making your characters, pose your puppet in the positions you want, then draw wire frame and joint images based on the puppet's position. Then draw your characters over the wire frames. You won't believe how much this helps.

You have a beautiful menu screen. I like your clothing and character designs. Your battle screen is nice to look at, too. I look forward to seeing more.
@krox
Woah those chara sets are super cool! I especially love the Joe one, but the sprite with two head really sweet too! The map is a bit bare - you might want to fill it out with some natural things like bushes or maybe another house? You could also make it smaller! Either way, the art is looking good!

@Housekeeping I'll keep that in mind! The last thing I want is for people to think the story is a slog!

@pianotm <3 Thank you for your comment on the sprites! They'll have a more fitting background when I get further in development~
@Archeia
You have nice stuff I like the fairy spirit the most.
@Ocean
I like the overworld icons, and the sprite they look nice.

@pianotm and AceOfAces Thank you for your feed back :)

Thanks. It's flattering that you think my art is inspiring.
@pianotm: Yeah, that's definitely more interesting! I understand the problem you're dealing with, but you probably don't have to worry about trying to be repetitive; by the nature of looping music, it's going to repeat itself. My fear is the opposite: I want to make sure my stuff doesn't sound too repetitive!
@J-Man
That guy-joining the group scene is soooooooo jrpg like hahaha. It has me chuckling, but in a good way! I like the battle animations a lot, the character poses look very natural. The custom low saturated sprites clash with the colors of the RTP since they seem quite pale in comparison. The green-haired girl also lacks an outline for her hair making her blend into the ground more and also makes her seem different from the other sprites. Her portrait is also completely different in style, whereas Zack's is still different from RTP but far closer.
.. then Silva joined. So that is actually a dagger, ohhhhh.. it really looks like a completely awkardly held sword.

I like the lil different twist of "we already know", far better than the IT ALL IS A SURPRISE. As well as the kind of stereotypical but still amusing rogue stereotype.
Seems like a solid jrpg in its tones!

@UPRC
MAPPING! + orchestra. That one kind of supernatural plane .. so does the pathway extend from one side to the other? Warpings seem out of the question.
Different races, diverse mapping (I like the vines on the stone), diverse areas, different races. Looks all solid.
It's really just a new area preview, for a trailer some dialogue and gameplay snippets would make it much more interesting to watch for the duration. But that's not the point, now is it.
Very solid work! There are a few things that seem less pretty (like the line of trees early on working up to a building seemed strangely linear), but overall great to look at!

@eplipswich
I really feel more like wanting to discuss this concept.. hahaha. Well I love the after-school music. And ... are you seriously having lessons during kindergarten? That's wild. That's the thing with borrowed terminology, hah!
The window layout is simple but in the introduction you may need to try formating a lil different, a lot looks strange.
The style is simple, and the dream cuddly and bright. So that all fits and is quite practical.

So this is about rediscovering a purpose in life? Of being stuck? You know that theme quite resonates with me, with a lot of people certainly, we all have moments where we feel we are not going anywhere. But then I don't see that as a permanent thing, nor do I see "working for nothing" as the reality of life, and .. a lot of other stuff.
I really wonder how this will pan out. It can be a make-do dream world fulfilling what you won't tackle truthfully.. or you can mature from that and see that part of what you dreamed of is still there or possible within the responsibilities of making a living, and/or that dreaming has been part of reality all along, or can be, that there's no formula to live life. Or that maybe there is. Stuff. Lots of possibilities.
And depending on what it is it can send quite some mixed messages.
I gotta be honest and say I don't enjoy this vibe, personally, but here's hoping. It can be quite powerful if done right.

There are a lot of cute details to it, haha, like the flea waltz! I could play that one as a little child, too!
The calling you out to be the best is really intentional, hah.
A little late to the party, but Ara Fell's prologue has been submitted! Let me know what you guys think!
