EDIT: What #GamerGate reminds me of:
The "no way, dude" in Skate or Die 2 on the NES sounded cleaner than this guy's voice. Hissssskrrhhsskrrhssssskrrhssjapansskrrhssss
GamerGate? Anti-GamerGate?
Was that a thing? I must have been living under a rock.
On the one legitimate issue at hand, I think that opinionated reviews don't qualify as journalism in the first place. Journalism is about stating and showing facts, not critiques or opinions.
I say let amateur reviewers say what they want and earn money from pathetic businessmen. As consumers I'd say we should be smart enough to make our own opinions about the games we see and hear about.

15,000 dollars a month? Never knew Klan membership was that expensive.

Yep, this sure went downhill fast.
Not fast enough, I say.

At least it went downhill in a constructive manner.
That's right! We agreed to be a fruit salad!
This rings true. Not just about gg, but all kinds of shit.
I have a pretty big problem with the stereotype of the "typical gamer" being rammed down our throats by some on the anti-gamergame side. I'm slightly paraphrasing here, but they basically said anyone who disagreed with them are overweight, white, straight males who, apparently, don't shave their necks. This is the kind of ad-hominem that doesn't help anyone and just causes continuing division.
The natural response is that overweight white straight males are so badass that they're immune to racism, sexism, and neckbeardism, but this is untrue. All stereotyping is bad. I have seen an enormous diversity - political, racial, gender, national, and more - among gamergate supporters. In fact, the only unifying element seems to be that they love games.
This sort of "typical gamer" stereotype is really annoying, outdated, and mostly being pushed by media sources. It is the continuation of being shamed for being a gamer from our high school days that might have made us nerds or outcasts.
And now they're comparing gamergate supporters to ISIS and threatening aspiring indie developers who support gamergate with exile and ostracism from the gamer community.

Game journalism, both AAA and indie, have been biased and outright corrupt by being in bed (figuratively of course) with developers and publishers for the longest time. Rigging is encouraged since there's something in it for both sides that participate. It's a real issue that needs to be completely unearthed for all interested parties to see.
But, you really have to ask yourself this question if you want to get at the heart of this whole movement:
Why are a large group of people raging on about it now when the deep level corruption has been apparent and out in the open for years?
Sure, all the noise made by the ones who first took the GamerGate mantle may have caused quite a few people to adopt GG in order to sniff out the depths of gaming journalism corruption, but don't forget that this all started to screw up the life of one woman whose personal shit should have stayed that way.
What her ex did is the lowest vindictive blow you can do to your ex; it doesn't matter what she did, personal should stay personal. If she's as bad as he says she is, her actions will speak for themselves. She wouldn't need your help to look bad if that were the case.

To be fair; it's not a threat, it's a promise. If people know you're a piece of shit, chances are you won't be forgotten and your business will suffer accordingly.
And to half the people that are calling out article writers for "telling us what to buy" because they got paid to advertise it: ever seen a commercial? It's the same thing. We're bombarded with this every day. It's nothing new and definitely isn't something that needs to be "called out". Hell, to a small degree, it's the same as going "hey guys, check out my game", which is something all of us here are guilty of...

I didn't put a gun to peoples' heads and tell them to download it. In fact, I didn't even advertise it. Not once.
... aside from harmonic.
