esby is that an ara fell fangame

it looks fine. i wish refmap had more variety though

<liberty> hey a winter-themed event
<craze & karsuman> clearly it's time for a game about a beach resort

finally cobbled together enough assets to appease myself. if i get really ambitious, i'll make some wet sand coming up for 2-3 tiles. it needs that bit more shading.

all the autoshadows will be gone, don't worry about 'em... fucking bullshit autoshadows ;V

edit: why'd i use one purple flower. replacing it with a white bunch to fit the rest of the map

World map geography for next project

Used Celianna's map maker as a base and went from there.

very tasteful, craze. not overloaded or patchy. a respectable balance of detail. the road autotiles are a little bland, though - perhaps use a road autotile with a distinct border, or break up the road a bit with sand sort of "blowing over". the beaches are also a tiny bit too straight in spots (by maybe one or two tiles). I'd also cluster a couple palm trees together here or there. still, like I said, it's tasteful. ps: the cactus in the upper-left looks a little odd because it's so close to the cliff edge.

good use of refmap, esby. that's what I like to see; it's not too cluttered or random, instead choosing to be nice and compact. the rope ladders need to be extended, and a tiny bit more color would indeed help matters (just another couple splashes of green/yellow would go a long way). you may also want to use the deep water tile in the center of the water. that would help achieve some of that color variation. the best thing about the map is the overall shape - it feels organic without being over the top.

loving it, harmonic. nice and colorful. detailed with logical layout (though some of the mountain ranges clash with the surrounding regions a tiny bit). has the same vibe of the old FF world maps but in a proper map form. a few town avatars would help make it feel complete.

@Craze: I like your map, but your patches of grass in the sand feel a little weird. I'm sure it can actually happen in real life, but it still feels kinda weird to me that there's grass growing so randomly among a completely sand area. For there to be sand in the first place, most of the beach probably must have been washed up by some waves breaking down rocks into sand, and the waves would destroy the random grass while they're at it. I dunno, I could be wrong so take that with a grain of salt.

I think you could also add some more decorations. Not like, a huge amount of detail or anything, just a few more trees and such. It looks ok when you look at the whole thing but I assume the player has a smaller area of vision in the game, making the screen look more empty.

The game is based on Florida's beaches and marshlands, and Florida beaches most definitely have grass. The grass right up against the water is silly (and would go away if I do make the wet sand tiles), but otherwise it's pretty normal. Fun fact: grass and its roots are used to help reconstruct dunes that are falling apart. Like any vegetation, it helps hold soil in place, and grass in particular is hardy and clingy.

I thought about more trees and such. Might try it. It's the outside of a hotel though, so it's not meant to look truly wild, just "not clinical." I'll experiment. =)

Same universe as DS2? Map looks similar I think.

@Craze- If you do add more trees maybe it can be for "shady" spots and put a chair underneath it for people to just sit and watch the water :)

das a good idea.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Same geography, just more developed, different universe

Ah yes I see you've never seen a map of Europe

@Harmonic:
Looks very good. Is it an in game map or just a reference?

@Craze:
I don't mind grass on beaches at all, but generally it's not right up on the water, yeah? Even if you have a specific basis in mind, most people are going to raise an eyebrow at that.
its obviously Pangaea and that's South America breaking off from Africa.

Someone dumped a bunch of snow in the mediterrainean sea to try to stop global warming, and England's heart grew three sizes. But it's close!!!

Thanks Kaempfer - it's the main in-game world map. Going to serve as a mission hub. This is just the base graphic file, it will have a HUD and icons for objectives when applied.

You've made 2 posts saying the same thing now, so I'm wondering if this problematic to you? I've found that people tend to emulate the shapes and patterns of Earth geography. It's what we know, it's what seems to make sense.

No, I'm not complaining, I just have a weird sense of humor.

Oddly enough, that was not the process for this particular geography, however, yes it does kinda sorta have the same shapes.

Actually, I focused more on what Earth regions these places would emulate. You can clearly see Northern France / Southern England in the lush, river-y grasslands. The mountainous region to the SE is very much like Persia. And the snowy plateau in the NE definitely has a Scandinavian feel to it. And there is a tiny island between the main continent and the smaller "Britain" continent where a large, London-inspired Steampunk city lies.
REBIRTH OF REFMAP. I like.

Speaking of which, here's some good old fashioned REFMAP for Rise of the Third Power along with a portrait for one of our adorable little thiefy protagonists. The expressions are all done, just not colored. I was worried the image wouldn't do well resized so small, but I think it actually came out great.
