GAMES YOU HATE OR DISLIKE?
Posts
I hate the direction Fire Emblem is going in myself... :/ The skin-shipping and the blatant fan-service is just urgh. Blame FE13/Awakening for it. It may have saved the series from oblivion, but I'd rather have had the series die a quiet death with some dignity left...

Maybe there are elements of the game that make me dislike some things ( like the main characters of certain video games like Phantasy Star 4
What didn't you like about them? (Not getting defensive or nothing, just curious, since obviously this is a completely foreign opinion to me. XD )
Oh, I just didn't like Chaz. 'nuff said. While I respected him at the end of the game, he just annoyed me to no end. ><

Chaz is kind of a big doof, yeah, so that is definitely an understandable opinion.

2. The game is overflowing with sexual deviancy - A big feature is the accessory shop, which lets you view your character in a swimsuit/ in underwear, including an underage girl. Also, there's a feature that lets you rub characters ala Pokémon-Amie, who can be sexually pleasured that way. Lastly, a support conversation with the MC and a character named Soleil involves the use of a date rape drug to "cure" her of her lesbianism and make her marry you. Even if you deny that she's a lesbian, that still portrays homosexuality as an unnatural disease.

Yeah, FE: Fates looked fucking disgusting for these reasons. Not to mention that outside of creepshow dating elements FE games are dull as a bag of sand in the first place. I really wanted to believe that the Pokemon-Amie-esque thing in Fire Emblem Fates was a joke after I first heard about it on Polygon but... Nope. Just creep bait for rapey animu fans.
I played FE Awakening for all of 20 minutes and holy christ, that game fucking blows. So it's definitely on my list of games I hate or dislike.
Anyways, time to cause some controversy in this thread:
Mother 3. I finally forced myself to sit down and play this "masterpiece" after listening to the entire world shit their pants about it for like 3 years. It's bland. The art and music are wonderful, but the game those things are attached to? Eugh.
It really is an example of something being extremely over hyped- were people not creaming themselves about it I probably wouldn't have been filled with so much disdain for the damn thing.
I'll just copy/paste my thoughts from the What Videogames Are You Playing Right Now thread (spoilers inside):
Man, that was... Over rated. People hype it up WAY too much for what it is. Sure, it had some good parts but I mean, people make it out to be the most tragic and heartfelt story in the world with all these unforgettable characters and shit, and it just isn't. The only time I really felt "touched" by the game was during the final battle, and I've been way more moved than that before.
One thing I'll say is that the combat is awful. It's not like, hard to beat or anything, but it's just hideously boring and shallow. I'll admit, I ended up turning on some gameshark codes around the end of Chapter 5 just so I wouldn't have to sit there and be bored out of my skull in the fights anymore. Perhaps that's shitty of me, I don't know. But I was literally dreading every fight because all you do is smack the A button for 5 minutes and try to match a beat.
As for the story, I mean, yeah, it's more than your average "dark demon destroys the world" JRPG fare, but it still feels kind of dull and aimless a lot of the time. I never really felt anything pushing me forward in terms of the plot, it was just point A to point B kind of stuff. My favourite part of the story was actually before you even control older Lucas, when you get to play as Flint, Duster and Salsa and see how their stories all happen around each other. I feel like if they kept that kind of story telling going instead of doing the whole Needles thing I would have liked the game more.
People big up the characters a lot, but in terms of the main party there's nothing much to say. They barely even say anything or talk to each other during the game. The only one who really gets a character to speak of is Kumatora, who is thankfully a pretty good one at that. Flint was probably my favourite character of the whole bunch, not sure I can say why... Perhaps he reminds me of my own dad? Again, I might have liked the game more if Flint stayed the main character, but I guess that's not how Mother works.
The NPCs and side characters are all funny and well written, as is expected of Itoi's work. Of course, there's not much depth to any one in particular, again, to be expected. It's just a shame they didn't develop the main characters a bit more.
Hinawa's death isn't "tragic" like people make it out to be. Everyone I've heard talk about it acts like they were moved to tears, but come on, it's barely even on par with Aeris kicking the bucket, and Aeris' death wasn't sad AT ALL. How can you feel bad about her death when you've known her for all of 5 seconds? She has like 3 lines before getting gored to death.
I understand it might be sad to think about losing a mother and stuff, but it really doesn't come off like that, because as a player you aren't invested in Hinawa at all. You don't even know her. The best thing I can say about her death is that they handled Flint's reaction very well, and it was a beautiful way to do it- no talking, just animation and the condolences of the villagers.
Also, while we're on the subject of Lucas' family, they don't really try hard enough to make the reveal of Claus being the Masked Man very surprising. If you pay attention at all it's pretty much written on the walls that he's Claus. "Wow, the commander sounds and looks exactly like me, and somebody in the pigmask army is pulling needles like I can? I WONDER WHO IT COULD BE? Maybe it's supposed to be some kind of dramatic irony or something. I don't know.
The 7th Saga. Poor young Housekeeping found it at Gamestop (or was it Funco Land at the time?) and was excited to play an RPG he hadn't heard of before. Part of my childhood innocence died that day.
I also went back and played Phantasy Star 3. I had fond memories of it from my childhood--mainly the lineage system in which depending on who you marry, you'll have a different son and the story will be radically different. Then I played it again and it was just atrocious--worse encounter rates than the default VX.

INCORRECT this honour will forever go to FF2 for being a terrible, nonsensical, not fun to play game. Even if you're not a Final Fantasy fan, I guarantee this game will stand out as the least fun of the lot.
Source: I WASTED TIME PLAYING THIS GAME IT WAS EVEN THE GBA SUPPOSED TO BE BETTER REMAKE AND IT WAS STILL AWFUL do not make the same mistake just to say you have played every final fantasy it's not worth it
Sure FF2 is bad, but even with the horrible wall of monster closet doors, heavy armor being worse than useless, messed up stat gain system where you can find yourself fucked if you get too far in the game without finding out how to raise agility and evasion, grindy as fuck spell mastery system, boring dungeon design, torus world map design, and is completely awful BUT IT DOES HAVE THIS:

then the final boss dies and you win (NES version only though)
It is way up there in worstest final fantasies but IMO FF3DS still takes the shit crown of the crap cake

The game isn't even out in Europe, but Fire Emblem Fates (both versions) is already looking terrible.
1. The protagonist already comes off as a massive Mary Sue - Awakening already had a main character that completely thrashes the main game as soon as someone's paired up with him. What furthers this is the fact that you're now on your own (instead of being Chrom's Bro/Wife), able to shape the story to your will, take all the glory and use Dragon Vein to alter the freaking terrain.

I agree actually, that's what I thought when I seen that game instatnly, it seems like it just wants to start a wild fire with the homosexual thing.

Or, you know, so children can pet and feed their Pokemon like they would a dog and a cat. But they're the minority, yeah?

I meant the Pokemon-Amie-esque thing in Fire Emblem Fates, sorry. Pokemon-Amie itself is just what is says on the tin.
I should definitely go and make that clear in my original post. Sorry!

While it definitely sounds like you enjoyed the game less than I did, I always thought that the Mother series in general was always stronger in its narrative and quirky charm than its gameplay. In that regard, Mother 3 probably has the best gameplay out of the two in the sense that the menu system is better organized and the added combo system allows for some added depth to playing the game. Nailing those 16-hit combos was really satisfying for me.
I still agree with a lot of your points, I wasn't that moved with Hinawa's death either, and I wouldn't stamp it as "best game ever" like some of the die-hard fans are, but I still had an enjoyable experience overall. It's still a great game imo, just not as great as some people make it out to me.
While we are on the subject, I REALLY think people should not bother with Mother 1/Earthbound Zero. From the start of the game, you'll find that the battles are horribly balanced and the random encounter rate is through the roof. It's basically like Dragon Quest in that you have to grind a lot to progress. Worse is that you have to find these musical notes, just like in the sequel, but unlike the sequel you don't really come across them in a perfectly linear fashion, you have to comb your surroundings or talk to people for hints to figure out where to progress, and with that encounter rate the game can become a chore real fast. The party members you acquire all start at level 1, too, so you have to make an extended effort to keep them alive and grind to get them on par, too.
It's one of those games that really fell victim to aging, imo.
I personally like Earthbound (Aka Mother 2) but I don't find it as good as everyone says it is, its good but not the best game ever like some say.

I agree that the combo system is nice, and overall the battles are more engaging and well designed than in Earthbound (which is so dull that I can't even get past Onett), it's just that IMO the combo system isn't enough to keep the battles engaging across the entire game. I got so sick of fighting enemies around the highway segment before the Thunder Tower that as I mentioned I stuck on gameshark codes so I wouldn't have to slog through it anymore.
I think the game had the potential to have really interesting combat, but instead fell into the trap of having Dragon Quest style slow battles that never really entice or require you to do anything remotely strategic or interesting outside of hammer enemies with the best skills you've got.
The thought that Mother 3's menu system is better than Earthbound/MZero's makes me shudder, honestly. Mother 3's menu management was a supreme pain in the ass, and that kind of system has got to be at least 20 years out of date for an RPG like Mother 3. There's no reason to have item storage with limited spaces broken across multiple characters unless there's a damn good gameplay justification for it. It's just too much of a fucking hassle trying to use it.
I think the series is carried mostly by it's random quirkiness as well, but it's never gotten to me outside of a quick chuckle or anything, and I really think the sadder parts or "deeper meaning" that everyone seems to love isn't anything special. As I said, I've been more moved by other games. I'll concede that out of the 3, Mother 3 is the best (and IMO only good) title, but the series just isn't for me. If I want to play a "quirky" game I'll stick to Paper Mario 1 & 2, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, or Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie.
The menu system did have some annoyances in that equipment took a slot available in each character's inventory, and that you pretty much need to buy for each individual character unless you are content on wasting time sorting through stuff in your menu, since the equipment menu won't equip character-specific items unless that character is holding it. >_>
To each's own, I guess.
By the way, I'm surprised to hear about the fanservice stuff in recent Fire Emblem games, because wasn't one of the defining characteristics of that series was that women are generally portrayed decently? Outside of some classes like Dancers, the Fire Emblem I know of had no skin to be found with its female recruits.

@Ratty: Sadly, ever since Awakening, its been a thing ( have a look at the official art of that game. The designs are not only hideous, but bare far too much flesh at times. Camilla from Fates seems to be the biggest offender currently >< ).

Are you fucking kidding me, Ninendo? For the love of god. She'd be so easy to kill. She's exposing a path to her heart and vital leg arteries, and why? So people can Pokemon-Amie her and pet her thong?
Jesus Christ JRPG devs get a god damn grip.

Ah! Sorry for the misunderstanding then!
Maybe the plot and design would be more bearable and less perverted if they gave the Fire Emblem IP to Toro Toro Resistance.
I honestly don't know what FE wants to be anymore. A waifu/husband simulator, an otaku's wet dream or you know, just a TBS. I refuse to call it an SRPG. That I reserve for FFT/Shining Force.
I do miss the GBA-era of that series... FE, that is. (sigh)
