Honestly, I quite like the Misaos (although choosing to permanently drop anchor here right as last year's one concluded probably had something to do with it.) It certainly provides an insight into the psyche of RMN's visitors that year, if nothing else.
Then, fact that "Tumblr" nominees often win is in many ways a good thing, as it keeps us from becoming too insular. In a way, the question might well be not "why the masses of Tumblr et. al. ignore our games?", but "Why we ignore them?". I mean, HOME had been the frontrunner in several categories last year (before ultimately ceding ground to Oneshot like everything else), and it continues to get attention nowadays. Yet, not a single one of its reviews was written by an established user on here, as far as I remember, and I found that quite strange (I suppose I should get on it myself...some day.)
This is interesting. This is interesting because, I never thought of the Misao's this way. But more people probably should, as it would reduce the outrage, the drama and the anger that has come from, the importance of this award ceremony year after year.
So the Misao's is kind of like, "the people's choice awards" right? An award ceremony, voted by the public, for the public. Perhaps this is what the Misao's should solely be seen as, due to it's often outside involvement, outside of RMN's community.
But, rather than trying to replace the Misao's as some may have suggested, perhaps there should be a second award ceremony, one held during the month of RMN's inception, that would highlight our very own community's achievements.
Because, there's been A LOT of progression here, a lot of technical achievements and lot of community involvement, that not whole lot of people realize outside of this community. It goes unrecognized, and we really should take a month or a day or whenever the date RMN was created, to recognize those achievements.
Because guys, really, it may not seem like it, but we've come a long away. The stuff we do here on RMN matters, it really does, some people may not think so, but it does.
Think about what you would be doing right now if RMN didn't exist - and that's why we need to celebrate it.
We need to have a separate award ceremony or something celebrating RMN's success and our very own community members.
...Like, there's probably some community event that you guys have here yearly, that I don't know about, making my point invalid or whatever (...and I totally apologize for that.)
But Jesus Christ Man! Liberty works her butt off! Ketona works his butt off! So many people work their butt off to manage this fucking site and their games and holy shit, that needs to be recognized!
We need an award ceremony, for us!

The Misaos are monumentally silly but this community goes way out of its way to make sure no one ever respects us or takes us seriously.
I can't think of a time the misaos resulted in anything but complaining, but apparently it's very important to our community even though no one seems to like them.
You say this while having the most BORING categories like "interface" that the GOTY is going to get anyway. The misaos should just have more community nominated categories and more jokey like "least likely to get finished" or whatever. There's a clear contradiction in how the misaos are built systematically vs how the community interacts with each other when it comes to talking about games.
The problem is that this started back when the internet was small and there was no real way to gauge how relevant a game was in terms of quality or notice-abily so some forum voting thing was the only way to relatively judge all the games in the rm community. You got a pretty good idea of what the year was summed up as. even if some of the categories sound like wisaos. Now you got venues like Steam or the general wider indie spectrum to see how your game stacks up through sales or social media idk. There's not as much point to it so therefore you get a lot of new people taking it seriously and old shits like me saying the same thing over and over.
Here is a newbie's view of the Misaos.
I call myself a newbie, because while I've used RMN to create game pages for a few years, I haven't ever been active in the community. I don't know much about Misaos, this'll be the first time I've participated.
As Red said, it's a people's choice award. It's results are often based on activity outside of our community. This is good because it provides some outside recognition. On the other hand, tumbler's community does not carry the best reputation either. My kneejerk reaction to hearing Tumbler's involvement is that it cheapens the awards. I'd feel similarly if 4chan was found to be a significant factor in the awards. I might even question it's effectiveness as a people's choice awards if a game can win simply because it is a fanfic of a popular series. That sounds incredibly broken - and I don't know how that could be fixed.
So, why not a second award?
I would propose a panel of 5 judges whom are randomly selected every year.
These judges would be active members who have opted for having the time to participate. Also, a makerscore limit could be placed so that the judges are known to be well established in the community.
If not makerscore, then maybe a post limit? I mean there are some active members who don't do things that give makerscore.
Anything the judges release wouldn't be allowed to be nominated, obviously.
How does this proposal sound?

It's been attempted in the past. Twice (I tried organizing it back when I had the energy to organize things). It ended...badly. It played out exactly as the Misaos did, in the sense people got all fed up over the results, but instead of directing their ire at some amorphous anonymous entity like 'Tumblr', it was directed at the judges themselves. Not unsurprisingly, there was little appetite to do it again.

basically, what I am saying is that on paper the idea of a committee of judges to highlight and praise games/endeavours is a great one, but in practice things tend to go to shit. But that was back in the Time of Yore (2009) so maybe it won't be so bad if we tried again. I ain't organizing it though.

Don't know why people are so butthurt about this. I don't agree with this list but nor do I agree with any other awards, for anything, ever.

I'd like to point out that THE OLD LIST IS MY FAULT AND WAS BASED ON A FLAWED SYSTEM. That is all.

I can't see any drama in the comment section of The Educated choice, i think its a good format and funny alternative to Misaos (not a replacement, that would be silly. Replacing anything with such a long tradition would be silly and forums would fill with people unhappy about the change, moaning about the current state). Personally, I would like to see an official selection of the most profound reviewers around(nhubi, Cash, Addit, Soli, Kylaila, Calunio, NS...).
There will be always 'Darkens' to any award. Usually majority of people either disagree with any choice or doesn't care at all. I don't know any flick, which won Oscars since King's speech and there were bunch of movies from that year, which i consider better.

Cool, cool no worries, I would really love to be involved with this, if possible.
What I was thinking more of, wasn't so much an educated rank choice awards or a staff choice awards but a community based choice awards. our community, RMN.
(Like, I'm still trying to think of how we'd narrow it down, though but I kind of want to avoid that.)
But, the idea is that, it would be the award ceremony, that the misaos weren't able to cover - (the notables games that don't get mentioned, would get mentioned)
It'd be committee/community based, where we'd either be working off misao nominees, games through word of mouth or community members that we feel deserve an honorable mention within RMN's community, for that year. ( and if we somehow forget someone or something, we'll mention them next year)
The idea is that, at the end of this award ceremony, we'd have a much grander scope of RMN's involvement, particular members who stand out and have contributed within the community and this really great list of games to play through, for that particular year, that we can continue refer to as reference:
Like for instance, in the 2013 Misao Awards, Fey(by Ashes of Emeralds) lost the Technical Prowess award to The Drop (by Deltree) right? Two very different games, made in two entirely different game engines, tackling two entirely different genre's of RPGs - even though Fey lost, it should still get an honorable mention from our community, because it's a real achievement to create a relatively good action rpg in rpgmaker2003, in an engine that was never really intended to create action rpgs with - So that next time, someone asks,"...how would you go about creating an action rpg in rpgmaker2003?" we would refer them to Fey and they'd see this award, for that particular year.
Like, the idea isn't so much to pick the best games, but to highlight certain games within RMN's community for that year, (kind of like those year end editions, you get with Magazines around new years, or even kind of like a year book.)
Because like, there's a lot of great stuff here going on within RMN, a lot of really great articles, a lot of really great media, a lot of really great community members and games, that not a whole lot of people even know about by simply looking on what's the on front page.

Yeah! something like this!
Like, this award ceremony would acknowledge those contributions and personal achievements within our community, because honestly, you guys deserve it.
Like, it really amazes me, how much content everyone proceeds for this site and how everyone from all different walks of life and different parts of the world continue to contribute and be apart of this community!
We really should take the time to acknowledge that!
Like holy shit guys, this RMN!!

I actually have something like this in the works for the future. I haven't actually worked on it yet (I've been busy working on something else for the past month) but it's something I've kicked around ideas for. I may reach out to people for assistance on it soon-ish.
I appreciate your enthusiasm for our little community!
author=kentonaPlease, please do not bring this back. I'm assuming that anyone advocating for it was not around at the time to experience how hostile the atmosphere was. It sounds like fun on paper but it made the community very venomous and unpleasant to be around.

RMN is different from other "choice awards" because it's passing judgment on the work of the community members, many of whom have put months if not years of hard work into their entries. When you have someone make a big official announcement about how your game is inferior to someone else's game, it's bound to cause hurt feelings at best or resentment at worst.
Perhaps another approach might be to have an event where users submit something like "my most memorable moment in an RMN game this year" and the submissions are collated into a series of articles or something, with a maximum of one entry per game. That way, there's no drama over rankings as anyone can submit something (provided the write up meets some quality and length screening). It's also more interesting than yet another "best of," I think.
EDIT: On the bright side, it can't possibly be worse than in 2010. Hopefully we've moved on from sending death threats to people.

Yeah, this sort of thing as a juried competition in the community is probably a bad idea for the reasons cited; it's likely to turn into the already unhappy reactions to Misaos, only with more hurt feelings.
If you feel any games are robbed of the attention they richly deserve, maybe do some reviews or post in the discussion thread about how freakin awesome they are (and preferably not by tearing down whatever won*).
Heck, anyone who wants to make their own dumb, pointless, unofficial awards could probably do so. MAYBE I WILL if I have the time/energy at the end of the year.
*Which is not to say people shouldn't criticize the games themselves, but if you're trying to make one game look good while dissing the other game, you end up looking super petty and then nobody wants to look at the thing you like because obviously it sucks if you have to talk shit to make it look good.
I've been saying this for years but if you feel like a game isn't getting the attention it deserves, do something about it! This is a user-driven community. The staff can't wave their hand and get something more attention, but there are things you can do.
-Review the game.
-Do a Let's Play/Let's Try for the game if you're into that sort of thing.
-Suggest the game be featured or given a front page spotlight. We have threads for this.
-Share the game outside this community with people you think might enjoy it.

Thank you all for your explanations. It really did help put some perspective to it...
I had no idea that the concept had been tried before.
I'm still curious as to the "Gender and Race Topic (It’s hard not to get involved or look away.)" What's the story behind this option?

Topics about this sort of thing tend to get heated and full of people squabbling and trying to get the last word. That's the joke.
@Red this whole wording of ceremony and committee thing is making me feel like i should bring a fancy robe or something on post 2015
I said it before but idk, just don't make the categories about better/worst just make it about what stood out. Not metacritic's red to green system but rather a cute rainbow system.
