I rented Fates from GameFly, then turned right around and opted to keep it, meaning I got a "used" copy for $29 and got to skip the long lines. The system works!

I'm not a huge fan of it yet - it seems the characters have gotten progressively worse on a whole in every game since Sacred Stones on the GBA - but I love me some Fire Emblem regardless.

By chapter 10 of Birthright, I was more into the characters. Sakura, Hana and Saizo are the best Hoshidans for sure, but I like almost all of them. Setsuna is growing on me... slowly. Amarza... whatever his name is... is the only one that I'm like "ugh fuck you" to. I wish Tamuki had some more development time, hopefully the story treats him right and gives him what he deserves to be interesting.

Jakob is so fucking strong.

edit:

Alright, once you get to Iliasport in Monster Girl Quest, the game actually challenges to a reasonable degree. Also, the game really loves throwing overpowered characters at you way before you're able to beat them.

I'm happy to say that Birthright has started to come into its own. I'm enjoying it much, much more after I hit chapter the 10-11 area.
I didn't know Jakob would follow you in Birthright as well. Mozu does, but she's a sidequest character so that's not surprising. Jakob is pretty good but he sits the bench for me. The game has a breeding system like Awakening/FE4, so the offspring are generally stronger than the parents. I didn't know how the breeding stuff would work, so I actually wasted 3/4 of my special class seals because I assumed the offspring would inherit their parents' current classes rather than what they start out with. I also botched some characters because I thought the class change stuff would be like Awakening, where your level resets whenever you change classes, so I promoted many characters as soon as it was possible and effectively missed out on 10 levels worth of stats for my protagonist and others. XP is abundant enough that you should really keep them at their base class until Lv20, because I've got a few characters already level capped (though there's a massively expensive item that can increase the level cap--I can't afford it) and I'm not finished with the game yet.

This game's battle system has a cost meter and TP meter. When you attack an enemy, you can string together arts until you empty the cost gauge, ending the turn. Getting a lot of hits will increase the damage of later hits as long as the combo timer doesn't run out. Using the same skill consecutively doesn't extend the combo timer. If you press D instead of Z/Space to activate an art, you get to use a stronger version of that art that doesn't count as the same skill for combo purposes. Before attacking, you can also use items (uses up cost) and assist skills (costs TP). Note that running out of TP puts the character into a temporarily weakened state until they regain enough TP.
I've been playing Real Lives 2010. It's quite interesting, actually. Basically, it's an educational tool for teaching people about others' lives in other countries, but it's pretty fun, too.

You take control of a randomly generated person and play their life from birth to death. So you're randomly placed in a city in the world, assigned a gender and family and then have to go through your life making small choices to see where it leads you.

There's also a chance to be born gay or bi-sexual which is pretty cool - though the chance is low and the only way you'll realise it's happened is if you pay attention to the gender of the romances that pop up for you.

It's all menu based, with a lot of stats to watch for, but you get the hang of it pretty fast. Also, it comes with factoids about the country you live in. You can emigrate if you get enough money to do so, and depending on where you live your opportunities can be quite limited. Chances of landing in a First-World country off the bat are very slim.

I've played two rounds so far (they take a while, depending on how long you live). In my first I was the third youngest daughter of seven kids living in Bangladesh and only got one year of schooling before having to get a job at 12. From there I had a few relationships before getting married at the ripe old age of 17, then had three kids whilst still working to bring money to the table. I never made it out of lower wage bracket and died at 84 to old age complications. I went blind at about 40 and was still working til I died as a potter.

My second play went a LOT better in some ways.
Male, born in Martinique, with four siblings. I only got two years of schooling before I had to find work at 15, then joined the Military for three years before settling into a life as a shoe-seller. I did well enough to keep my family fed and have some savings in the back, before deciding 'fuck it, I'm emigrating'.

Sold all my bonds and stocks and paid to get to Australia. Landed with 28,000 to my name with my two kids and wife. From there I sunk 10,000 into a clothes cleaning business and then became a billionaire. Like, my business took off so much I never had to work again! I was literally watching the millions roll in and kept shoving it away into the bank.

I was eating only gourmet food in my luxury house, donating millions to charity and spending like a madman - then died of heart issues brought about by eating too much rich food at the age of 67. By then I left my four kids (I'd had two more and adopted one, but one of them had died from drinking too much) well over a billion dollars.

I was only 38/100 happy, so I guess being rich didn't mean happiness for me in the end. :<
Lets see, games I'm currently playing, I'm still playing through Fallout 4, I started a career mode play through on wwe2k16 (Really like this game) and playing Fallout 3 for the 100th time since I got the broken steel add on. As of new games I just got, Shin Megami Tensei 4 on 3DS, great rpg, one of my personal favorites on the system.

Just finished off Legend of Dragoon for the first time. Feels really good to experience it after all this time- it was one of the RPGs I used to watch my cousin play, which got me into the idea of becoming a gamedev.

Also god damn, the final area is one of the best looking locations I've yet seen in a game. Spoilers:

Seriously, it's been a long, LONG time since I've been wowed that much by visuals in a game. So inspiring.

I don't know what I'm gonna tackle next. I'm wary of starting another RPG with FF9 right around the corner. Gotta take a look at some stuff.

Oh man, I haven’t played Legend Of Dragoon in years! I remember the last few parts dragging on a little bit too long, but it wasn’t a bad game. It’s just a bit of a shame that they never did a follow up.

Yeah, the last disc could be a lot better, which is a huge shame. It seems like when it came time to clue up the plot and tie everything together nicely they really got tripped up in everything they'd been setting up with the Winglies and the Moon and shit, so there ended up being a lot of throwaway bosses and dungeons.

It's still very entertaining despite that. Although I have to say, I don't really see any potential for a follow up there.
Stardew Valley has consumed my life. Someone send help. I am addict.

I ended up buying and beating A Story About My Uncle within about a single day. It was a pretty decent little game- a bit short, a bit wonky. The mechanics weren't perfect, and the animation was pretty noticeably low grade, but it had a neat young adult adventure movie vibe to it, and it was pretty painless to run through.

After beating it I was reminded that you can sell your dumb Steam Trading Cards, so I spent about an hour throwing them all on the market and got 5$ for it. Used the 5$ to buy The Last Remnant on sale, so I might start checking that out soon.
Last Remnant... yeah, not sure you'll like that one. It's... pretty bad. >.<;

I've heard so, but for $1.49 I'll give it a shot.

Honestly, it's just that I have a burning (and probably unwise) desire to play more JRPGs after beating Legend of Dragoon.

the last remnant isn't the worst. it's fucking bizarre, but i enjoyed it for what it was.

I'm over halfway done Birthright at this point. I should be on Conquest by next weekend. I'm not playing much else at the moment besides The Sims 4 and working on Swapsies event.

MssrLouisCyphre and I bought Final Fantasy Type-0 on Steam after both of us loving the shit out of the first ~10 hours of the psp fanlation... it'll be awesome to actually hear the billion side-comments the game has without subtitles. I need to do some more testing for Luchino and BadLuck first though.

I've been replaying the mini-campaign for Shadowrun: Hong Kong because I am still not over this game wanted to see what all I missed when I did it from my bad ending savefile first. (after that I deleted my old saves and started fresh so I could hear the developers' commentary. it was pretty interesting!)

Turns out I missed a lot, like some new weapons that made me wish I had my cybered-up mage go with rifles instead of pistols. ;_; There was also a lot of amusing dialogue including
- "because fuck you that's why" as an actual dialogue option
- gaichu doot doot
- koschei still being too cute
