THE STRAIGHT UP BEST FINAL FANTASY

FF12's story is nothing special if you're looking at it from a literary perspective; it's just a get-the-crystals story. FF12 would be a silly book.
As a videogame, however, FF12 excels. It provides opportunities to explore new areas, kill new stuff, and run around a floating city while yelling "I'm Basch! I'm still alive!" and making daring escapes on flying motorcycles.
That's what matters - feeling like a hero while summoning an esper and exploring a giant crystal's insides, even if you only have a rather basic reason to.

I concur, Craze. Feeling like a hero is a great motivator!
Even if I don't really have a goal other than "collect teh crystalz," if I feel like a hero, or if the gameplay is fun enough to wow you, even "collcting teh crystalz" can be a fun task! : )
A good example: Excite Truck. Theer is absolutely no story, but the flame-spouting, nitrous infused racing and overall "fun factor" kept me playing this game since I first got it.
(Not to mention, it was the first game I bought for my Wii. )

This is true for every single RPG ever.
Just got FFVII on my PSP. I don't see what all the fuss here is about. I'm quite enjoying it so far. I just hope I don't get bored with it like all the other FF's. (Except for 1 & 10)

Exactly.
Story: Final Fantasy X. A ton of subtle themes, plot twists, and layers made for a great story.
Gameplay: Final Fantasy VIII. This installment's gameplay systems were innovative and atypical -- honestly, I think the Junction System was a breath of fresh air. I love the heavy use of items and draw points, as well as the addictive Triple Triad card game.

Back in my day, games were made for gameplay. (kind of a duh point you made there, though unfortunately some think they can get away with crappy gameplay)

Final Fantasy legends 3 for the gameboy is the best final fantasy!
technically a "saga" game
i love dissidia and my highest level charaters are squall and *sporliiers* gabranth
PLUS NO MP TO DRAG YOU DOWN
Reasons for these 2: relentless revolver is useful for putting some heavy pressure on the enmy while EXecutioner GIVES FREE EX MODES WITH OUT CORES

Gabranth is also insanely easy to level against.
Run when he's in EX mode, attack when he isn't. Hell, let him break you so you can do zero HP damage for experience.
