and Mr_Detective, I feel like you can bring those black-edge windows back one tile to give the front part of the building a bit more depth. As it is, it looks very thin. The reason you're having problems with that sign is because it makes it hard to distinguish what is 'roof' and what isn't, but you're getting there, I think.
Like this? :P

Isn't it kinda weird for the middle part of the hospital to have different windows?
Somehow the second one looks wrong. Police buildings are usually brick, not glass, because they don't want people shooting a gun at it.

Well, I don't know who is going to be that ballsy, but...

I'm running out of ideas. :(
@Mr_Detective:
Glass windows at the bottom, bars at the top :)
Plus, you're kind of getting the roof wrong. :(
It should be more like this:

Police stations are never that tall

Anyone arrested enough times. Yea, that works.
Arcan, in a city where it's the only one, possibly. Typically, though, the whole having multiple ones per town takes care of that.
I have one major issue with your buildings. The front parts aren't connected. Look at them! They're one/two block/s in width and about 13 blocks high. The building behind them that's supposed to be attached is only about 9 tiles high, if that. You need to make them the same height. What does this mean? Make the buildings thicker. In other words - roofs.

Also, you could split up the signs (like above) so they look better, and put them on the actual buildings themselves instead of giant billboards (which would stand on the roof but not be that visible by people passing by). The above would be easy for people near and far to see, not just those far away.
(Also, you should be looking up references for these buildings. They could probably help out a lot. Here's a few I found with different layouts, but that are interesting.)

Policia
- Usually situated on a smaller parcel of land, easily found by the populace.
- Not extravagantly tall in most cases. Large cities get a pass in this department, or older buildings that have been reused for police stations but weren't originally such.
- Next to or near a courthouse for ease of access.
- Not usually used as a jail itself. It's where the police can handle interrogations, case work and is the public face of the organisation.
- Usually has a very visible sign out the front.
- May have some cells inside for night-over arrests or transferrals.
- Not usually situated near places where vulnerable people live (Old people homes or hospitals) in case of a dangerous escapee taking hostages. Or banks, for the same reason.

Hospital
- Usually have a huge plot of land with drive-in and parking.
- Areas for ambulances, doctor parking and greenery.
- Complimentary buildings in the vicinity - health care clinics, dentists, optometry, masseuses, chemist.
- Helipad on the roof or nearby for emergency patients.
- Very large buildings, usually more than on wing.
- Emergency entrance for people who need instant aid, separate from the normal entrance. Also used by ambulances.
- Look up some floor plans to get a better idea.

The old one in my city was that tall- made of brick.
Also agree with Libby. YOUR ROOFS ARE WEIRD.

I am aware of the roofs, but I am still wondering if there is really a point to focus on that part.

Like I said last page, the player can only see this much of the building, or maybe a little more from the sides. I don't know what to do with the surrounding area yet. But if I put down a bunch of trees, the player will only be able to see as far as where the sign is. :P This is also why I can't split up the signs like that.
As for those references, I've seen some of them, and I do know that height is an issue. I'm still thinking on what to do with them now.
Would you guys like to advise what I should put around the buildings? ;)

LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

It takes sometime for me to see that it was a wall of hospital not it's roof. and only by seeing your bigger maps of them.
Also Mr_D you are making an absolute modern city, even a glass police building dose not matter because they are made of anti-bullet/c-4 glasses :P just let the player know about such a high technologies in a small dialogue .

Stairs, trees, flowers, cars. :)
I got some spare time today and yesterday, so I started my first project in 5 years :O Unfortunately my time has now ran out and I'll have to continue this some other day.. Here's the visual progress

OK, so I decided to move the hospital to a separate map, right next to the train station. But the big issue is still that the player can't see the entire building. I wanted to give the illusion that the building is bigger than what the player is seeing. But at the same time, not enough part of the building is being shown to the player. :O
Advice?

Advice?

Since I know there are some 8bit enthusiasts on this forum, here is a map I've been working on using ff3 rips and a few miscellaneous additions. It's still a working in progress, but it's kind of turning out how I want.

@Mr. D: Cut that roof inwards by two tiles instead of just one. If there's two tiles difference at the bottom, you need to make the same at the top. Otherwise your walls don't make sense.
