WHAT'S THE POINT?

Lately, I've been wondering, what's the point in mastering a program like RPG Maker 2003, and creating some games with it?

To me, there really doesn't seem to be one. Every time I ask myself what the point is of me pouring hours on end into some specialized software, to make a game, that wouldn't stick out any more than anyone else on this entire site, I keep coming to the conclusion that there isn't a point, and it's a genuine waste of time.

So, why do you guys do it?

I don't use 2k3.

can't make a bad game if you don't finish any games

It's a stepping stone to bigger, better things.
There have been some genuinely good games made with it, and I just think it's more fun to make one than playing commercial games in a lot of cases. Example: Dragon Age Origins, kill me now.

Dude, it's just a hobby. Let people enjoy their hobby. 'Nuff said.

It takes a few days to learn the ins and outs of a program like rm2k3. It takes years to learn how to make a good game.

When a game developer is looking to hire a game designer, they're going to be looking at various things that person has made (for example, fps levels, rts maps, mods, rpg maker games, and anything else you can pretty much think of). From their perspective, they want to know what the person is capable of with a tool they're familiar with. Most companies make their own tools for designing levels/maps/quests in their game, so they'll have to train the person they're hiring with those tools anyway, so what they want is someone who they know will be able to make good stuff once they've been trained to use what they have.

As said though, most people do it for a hobby, and rm2k3 is a good way of starting to make rpgs, and making rpgs of decent length.

I really don't get this "What's the point?" mentality some people have concerning the RPG Maker programs.
It's something I personally enjoy doing in my free time.
I'm sure 95% of the people on this site enjoy making games as well, or else I don't think we would all be here.

You can ask the same question about anything in this world that people call hobbies, like football, or card games.
They don't have a point other than simple enjoyment.

I partially agree with the OP.

I used RRG Maker as a toy back in the day. But since then I've moved on to creating my own game engines from scratch, that is if you want to do it for more than just a hobby. Otherwise, it's just a hobby to some, it beats doing drugs or watching TV.
For the thrill of having something to do, with the sweat pouring down your neck reminding you that someone else will see this, this monster I made, for better or worse.
What's the point, you ask? My answer is simple: Why not?

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Personally, I just like making games.
What is the point of anything? You're just going to die and most likely not be remembered. Just keep doing nothing until you die and disintegrate into dirt.

:3 Easiest answer to show, but really, it's just a very addicting hobby.
I use it as propaganda to push my values onto others.

Just kidding. I think that games are pieces of art, and that they have meaning. It really explores the value of choice, something that movies and books don't tend to do. They make you feel things, to think about things you otherwise wouldn't think about. Obviously, I'm a notorious plot-o-crat.

What's the point to making a painting? What the point of writing a book that you know won't sell? You do it for yourself, and at the same time, you do it for others.

Trying to make your final fantasy that's what, but not really. And avoiding cliche plots.

Actually, This is my real reason for making games. However, a kill all that stand in your way ideology mixed with a dose of aryan pride, it seems to miss the point.
