The Story

Charles Boone inherits his cousin's stately manor home, Chapelwaite Head. And discovers the doom in his very bloodline. An ancient evil has long slept beneath Chapelwaite Head. And now it is stirring in its slumber...

The Game

Chapelwaite is a horror adventure/RPG set in the 1850s, created for the July 2018 Theme Roulette event. My assigned theme was Abomination. The player steps into the shoes of Charles Boone, who is just moving into a family home he inherited from his late cousin, along with his faithful manservant, Calvin. The place is cold, and morbid, and drafty, and from the sounds of it, there are some very large rats in the walls. As Charles and Calvin explore Chapelwaite Head, they begin to unearth some ancient Boone family secrets. And some truths should remain buried.

Working within the time limits, I'm striving for the game to be as scary as possible while still providing engaging gameplay and an immersive atmosphere. The game includes RPG style battles, but they are exceedingly rare and exceptionally deadly. Many times, alternative gameplay to combat will be available as an option, and the player can evade or repel enemies in other ways. And there are fights the player can't win which he must flee from, for which the game uses a stamina system.

Nearly every light source in the game will be interactive. You can light candles, lamps, and fireplaces to stave off the darkness and brighten the mood, but lights can be extinguished as well.

Chapelwaite will also feature a sanity system most similar to Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, as the player's grasp on reality will begin to slip as Boone's mental condition deteriorates.

The game most likely has a playtime anywhere between 45 and 90 minutes.

Chapelwaite is based (although I've taken ample liberties) on the 1978 short story "Jerusalem's Lot" by Stephen King, which in turn was an homage to the works of the great H.P. Lovecraft.

Stand back. Artist at work. I paint with enthusiasm if not with talent.

Not so excellent, you need to add a background-repeat class set to repeat, not repeat-x because then it only tiles above.

Nice gamepage overall! The screenshots are hard to make out though, and I have my screen's brightness set to high.

I'm kind thinking maybe something more like...

#body {
  background: #000000 url("[url]https://rpgmaker.net/media/content/users/76389/locker/Page_Background.png[/url]") fixed;
  color: #FF0000;
}

...that?

Gotta love how the code-tag auto-includes the url tag. ;_;

Thank you, I'll see if I have time to give the darker parts a lightenin' before I drop the download.

I actually wanted repeat-x, btw, I was going for map background up top, clean black down on the bottom.
and also the game still has a few bugs that need to be ironed out.
and can you do a sequel to this because the ending certainly left the door open for another game
Sorry to disappoint, there will not be a sequel (I've got two unrelated game projects I'm actively working on and about five more ideas jotted down in a notepad file). The ending is the way it is because that's the way Stephen King ended the story.

About the bugs, let me know if any of them are game breaking, and I'll fix them and upload a new version. Short of game breaking, though, this is a finished project. In any case, I'm glad you enjoyed it and I appreciate you bringing any game breaking bugs to my attention.
stephen king did return to the setting of jerusalems lot with the vampire story salem's lot
oh yeah the bug i encountered was my character getting stuck off screen after a hallucination
Which hallucination and which map, if you don't mind? That way I can look into it.
I'm stuck on the day after the cellar part, my characters becomes invisible and I can't get find the key to the mausoleum.
I even tried going to the road outside.
Okay, I'll look into that moekyun. Can you tell me EXACTLY when your characters disappeared? That would help a lot!

SPOILERS:
To get the key to the mausoleum, first you have to find and decrypt Robert's Journal. I'll give you two hints, although there are already two hints in the game, the bloody notes left by Stephen. Anyway, the first hint is that it can't be found until the section of the game where you play as Cal (even if you examine the exact spot it's in). The second hint is that it's in the library. And that book once decrypted will tell you where to find the mausoleum key. Although there's no rush because you can't actually enter the mausoleum until the final night, even if you manage to complete all the necessary steps early.
the monster hallucination that appears on the screen.
Okay, so the issue's with the Hallucthulhu hallucination but nothing in that event code should cause your character to get stuck off the screen...what map were you on, do you remember? Chances are it's a combination of different event code that's causing the problem, not any one thing. The game has a bunch of systems that were thrown together VERY quickly and the sanity effects were never even tested (although the rest of the game was, twice).
Once my characters hits Level 8, on the route where I chose to read Vermis all the time. All of the map are having thunder storms and once I get down to the ground floor my screen position gets teleported to the great hall's center with my characters missing and if I'm lucky being able to get out of the mansion before that bug happens, that will happen outside of the mansion and I will get teleported on the north part of the map near the statue and I become invisible.

Also on those times I get a LOT of hallucinations.
Also on those times I get a LOT of hallucinations.

Well you've been reading De Vermiis Mysteriis a lot! This is a feature, not a bug. The frequency of hallucination is based on your remaining Sanity. Reading forbidden tomes is bad for your sanity.

Third and fourth lyrics of the first verse, baby.

I will look into this when I can. Thank you for the detailed report, I really appreciate it. I've got a few other projects that I'm very into right now but I'll definitely make a mental note to try and find this bug (these bugs?) and fix them. Thanks.

Gothic horror game. The stamina meter is a massive annoyance, half the game was me hobbling along looking for the plot around the house. The game and my sanity broke down completely on the final day.
what with a loud rainstorm along with multiple imaging effects occurring with a massive lag while I try to find something that turned out to be in my inventory all along, while cthulhu takes up half the screen making it hard to see stuff like the nosferatu that was chasing me in a dimly lit catacombs. Then I get killed by some frail skinny dude because I missed too many attacks. After beating him, some other abomination rose out from the depths of the earth and doomed the poor guy to eternal darkness. Like, after he rose up the game was just in this black screen. I guess that's the end of the game. Sorry but the lag, bugs, and over the top screen effects were making it difficult to play the game.

Sorry but the *effects* were making it difficult to play the game.

EDIT: Got past the black screen and finished the game. I can imagine all the problems that can occur when you mix a bunch of scripts like that.
Thanks for the feedback, bro. Hope you enjoyed some of it on some level, in spite of the many (some quite understandable) complaints.
Hello, I'd like to praise you on the game!

I've not finished it yet, but I'm loving it so far!
The story is excellent, I'm a sucker for anything inspired by Stephen King ^^
I like the turn-based style and the item-finding. Also, the music is wonderful, definitely puts you into the atmosphere ^^

The only real problem I have with the game is the visual effects when one has become shaken or traumatized. They tend to lag the game and makes it difficult to maneuver. Is there anything in the game to use to prevent these effects from affecting the characters? I've also had some problems with everything but the lights blacking out.

I'm sorry if I'm being a Debby Downer, but I thought I'd bring these things up front so you know and others don't have the same problem ^^

Thank you for listening to a fan~!

Thanks Kat! Thank you for being a fan! Very pleased you enjoyed the game. <3

This is a static project, so it's no longer being worked on. I've stuck the "done" sticker on it. Were this not the case, yes I would go in and completely reprogram the sanity effects to try and remove the combinations that leave the screen so messed up it's unplayable.

Is there anything in the game to use to prevent these effects from affecting the characters?

Emphasis mine. I hope you kept multiple saves. Here is a quick guide to sanity maintenance in Chapelwaite:

  • First off, the sounds (the THINGS in the walls) that start on your second day continuously plink away at your sanity while you are in the mansion. Make sure that time spent in the mansion is efficient and productive. Just wandering around the mansion with no particular purpose or goal will drive you nuts faster.
  • Don't look at things that are obviously upsetting. This is a very silly, very "Call of Cthulhu" piece of advice, and you know, it's not ideal because I wrote descriptions of things and dialogue and I want people to read those. That said, off the top of my head the holy water font filled with blood in the church and the grotesque statue on the grounds of the manor are both two medium-small sanity hits that are entirely avoidable by not examining them.
  • Do not EVER read De Vermiis Mysteriis. Don't even open it. Once you start reading De Vermiis Mysteriis (sp? it's been a while) you are consciously trading sanity for power.
  • How the hallunications work is that every (interval), interval being a number of frames, it rolls a d250 (a two hundred and fifty sided die). If the roll is equal to or below your (Charles') current Sanity, nothing happens. If you roll OVER your Sanity, you suffer a hallucination. Hallucinations themselves either never or almost never cause Sanity loss, but virtually everything else in the game does from simply being in the house to the fight with the angry mob to learning spells to seeing monsters, etcetera. Thus, once your sanity is below 150, you will start hallucinating regularly, when your sanity is below 100 you'll be hallucinating frequently, and if your sanity is below 50 it will seem like you are hallucinating constantly, and you'll start to get multiple stacking hallucinations which can eventually make the screen impossible to see and the game unplayable. Of course, if you have especially bad luck with the dice rolls, 150 can certainly feel like 100 and 100 can certainly feel like 150. If you are suffering lag, the lag itself may be compounding the problem as the game's frame rate will stutter, which could cause (interval) to become shorter or longer and will cause (interval) to become less reliable as a unit of time.

I hope that helps!
