The Story
Charles Boone inherits his cousin's stately manor home, Chapelwaite Head. And discovers the doom in his very bloodline. An ancient evil has long slept beneath Chapelwaite Head. And now it is stirring in its slumber...
The Game
Chapelwaite is a horror adventure/RPG set in the 1850s, created for the July 2018 Theme Roulette event. My assigned theme was Abomination. The player steps into the shoes of Charles Boone, who is just moving into a family home he inherited from his late cousin, along with his faithful manservant, Calvin. The place is cold, and morbid, and drafty, and from the sounds of it, there are some very large rats in the walls. As Charles and Calvin explore Chapelwaite Head, they begin to unearth some ancient Boone family secrets. And some truths should remain buried.
Working within the time limits, I'm striving for the game to be as scary as possible while still providing engaging gameplay and an immersive atmosphere. The game includes RPG style battles, but they are exceedingly rare and exceptionally deadly. Many times, alternative gameplay to combat will be available as an option, and the player can evade or repel enemies in other ways. And there are fights the player can't win which he must flee from, for which the game uses a stamina system.
Nearly every light source in the game will be interactive. You can light candles, lamps, and fireplaces to stave off the darkness and brighten the mood, but lights can be extinguished as well.
Chapelwaite will also feature a sanity system most similar to Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, as the player's grasp on reality will begin to slip as Boone's mental condition deteriorates.
The game most likely has a playtime anywhere between 45 and 90 minutes.
Chapelwaite is based (although I've taken ample liberties) on the 1978 short story "Jerusalem's Lot" by Stephen King, which in turn was an homage to the works of the great H.P. Lovecraft.
