Legend of Denadel put on a (hopefully short) hiatus.

Why?

Solitayre has given me a challenge to make Carlsev Saga better.

I accept that challenge.

Good luck Deckiller, and yes. Hopefully it will be short hiatus.

People are calling me crazy for going back to tweak Carlsev Saga one after one constructive review, especially given all the positive feedback I've gotten with respect to the story. However, a lot of the points he made are ones that were nagging at me for a while anyway.
You're crazy!

Seriously, though, look to the future and stop fretting about the past.

Thanks for all your help and advice, Kenton, as always. But my big concern is that Carlsev Saga Episode I is part one of a trilogy, so I want to keep as many players as possible.

I take great pride in the Carlsev Saga trilogy's story, so one bad review about it is enough to make me go back and work on my characterization. Everything had been positive up to that point, but I don't want to get a string of 2-star reviews from players who are more into character-intensive stories. If the story is going to fall apart for even a quarter of the people playing, then the audience is down to 75 percent for part two.

Now, I know that I can only do SO much with characterization, since it's a trilogy (I.E. Darth Vader doesn't get much development until The Empire Strikes Back). Still, I can make the stand-alone characters in Carlsev Saga one much more sympathetic, which will make the political storyline seem that much more emotional. It will hopefully draw more people into the sequel.

It's really only a matter of fixing and adding some cutscenes while redoing some of the gameplay. I had been working on a final release for that game anyway :)
Though I'll say Solitayre's review didn't surprise me at all, I also didn't agree with it because he's an intolerant douche he puts too much weight on certain aspects of a game doesn't know how to have fun and enjoy video games he's intolerant again.

...scratch all that. I can't say anything nice about Solitayre's reviewing methods.
Well, he liked my games. :/

I'm basically gutting Carlsev saga and I'm not liking half of these changes I'm making. They just don't feel right. I don't like personalizing these characters because that's just not how I built the first episode. It doesn't feel right changing the outcome of a character death just to make a few players feel "connected". That's not the point.

I'm seriously considering just saying "screw it" and just going with the changes I initially wanted to make before his review.

Solitarye is just one person, dude. Don't make changes based off his opinions if you don't feel the series deserves it. If he doesn't enjoy your game, then all you can say if "I'm sorry you couldn't enjoy the game."

...which you did. lol.

Also, I don't have anything against Solitayre (obligatory apology about my previous post), I just don't agree with some of his reviewing methods.

But that Budapest guy made a couple good points. He said that a lot of the characters weren't really likable and that Deckiller was a "Mary Sue"-type, which I guess is true based on Episode One. I at least need to give these characters some sort of redeeming trait through the flashbacks, and at least make Deckiller somewhat human in this game by adding a couple cutscenes.

And I don't know what I can do about the second half. I just can't go and add cutscenes and story arcs -- it just doesn't feel RIGHT. And it also doesn't feel right to just go and axe dungeons because people don't like gameplay-driven segments. I'll just have to settle for flashbacks.

Well...he's right. Deckiller is a fucking asshole. I don't like him either.

Well, if you feel you need to change it at all...then do it for YOURSELF.

If it doesn't feel RIGHT, then don't do it. It's that simple. Don't let others opinion's hinder your art.

Now...I know I'm saying all this while forgetting to mention one simple fact. I haven't finished the game myself because I barely have the desire to. I'm sorry to say it, but it's probably because I don't like any of the characters; they're all assholes. But, if the game is supposed to be like that, then that's the way it should stay; only change it if you feel it is necessary.

Change it only if you wish to improve it in any way, not because someone didn't enjoy playing the game. There are plenty of positive reviews for the game, so it's OBVIOUSLY a good, enjoyable game. All those others reviewers weren't lying, now were they?

I can't just go make these characters a bunch of likable protagonists. That's always going to hinder a lot of people from enjoying the game. I just need to make them sympathetic. If people want a merry band of likable characters from the very first episode, they will either have to deal with it or play something else. It's just not what Carlsev Saga is about.

And honestly, the idea was not to make anyone really likable in this episode. The idea is that there's too much going on to -make- them likable; it feels artificial otherwise. That all changes in Episode 2. I guess I figured people wouldn't stop playing for that reason.
I want to play it but it won't work on my computer >_<

Don't worry! More work will be done on this game soon, once I get out of this internal soul-searching struggle thanks to someone preaching hellfire and brimstone and scaring the crap out of me.
