You wake up in a cell with a mattress, a desk piled with coded papers and books, and a computer terminal with access to three other hidden occupants of the dungeon. The choices you make will determine who escapes, who dies, and who is trapped forever. But be careful... Not everyone is who they seem.
The game is written in Java and can either be downloaded or played in the browser here. Please contact me either through the comments or at psy_wombats@wombatrpgs.net if you have any problems running the game.
This is a short project inspired by the likes of Adventure, Myst, those 'escape the room' flash games, and also MSpaint Adventures. The game is probably an hour long at most depending on your reading speed, though there are nine possible endings. Note that this is cross between a visual novel, adventure game, and text RPG. If you don't like reading too much, you probably won't enjoy this. The only gameplay is through choices you must make as the player. For instance:
"You can examine the <w>all mirror, the <c>abinet, the <m>edicine chest, the <c>abinet, the <d>rain, the <s>ink and shower, the <t>oilet, or head <b>ack the the main room."
Have fun in your attempt to escape...!

So the main reason I'm updating the blog is that I just added another download for the game, this being a version of The LCPANES Terminal in HTML5/javascript. A while ago it was brought to my attention that on Mac computers, it wasn't possible to make selections at choices. This new version should fix that problem, so I'm going to go ahead and set it as the main download. (additionally, this should be playable on a mobile devices, if you care to try)
Next up, by this point, everything that's included in the game is definitive as far as typos/routing goes. I deliberately shut up about theories and intentions while this game was featured because at that point, it was "done," and I'd prefer the work to stand alone without any additional creator's notes or interpretations. It was a little surreal to have this game featured seeing as how it has zero graphics whatsoever, but I hope those who noticed it through the RMN front page enjoyed the game. (wow, that's only what, 3 months late? oh well)
Oh, and the reason this JS viewer was made was because of another VN project in the works... if you enjoyed the writing in this story, I'm currently working on Snowbound, which you can follow here. PentagonBuddy's also working on this, but we're holding off on an RMN page for a little bit.

author=Felipe_9595Thanks a ton for the bug report and screenshots! I've fixed both problems in the online version and as soon as I get home I'll fix it in the downloadable as well.

Well, I managed to escape, but I'm not sure that I got the best of endings. Unless there is only one ending in which you can escape, which given the complexity of the relationships between the characters, may well be the case. I certainly could've gotten worse endings anyway, so that's always something to cling on to. And at least playing through to get the other endings won't be as hard as it is with Clocktower. Fucking Clocktower...
I think the only real problem is that I'm just not sure too many of my choices had an effect. I guess that's kinda the point though, since this is certainly meant to be more story than it is game and having too many choices would take away from that. Here is what I thought about how the story went based on my choices. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY GONNA CONTAIN A LOT OF SPOILERS:
Now that that I'm done theorycrafting...
The story is really good and, aside from the odd typo (which I don't really blame you for, it's a long story!), I don't think you could do much to make this game better. In all honesty, it's times like these I wish it was possible to give something a rating without writing a review (although that wouldn't be a good thing), because how do you review a piece of writing when you don't really have any literary expertise? It'd be like writing a report on a book, except the book is relatively short and you really, really want to avoid giving anything away. I don't think I'd be able to do it.
In fact, I don't think that it is possible to write a review of this that isn't either far too general or contains far too many spoilers. When I write about the storylines in games, I don't often go into too much detail and all of what I've just said is the reason why. I'd rather just give a general impression of whether I liked the story or not and leave it at that. I don't think that a review that says, "the story is really good!" would suffice.
Eugh. I'll possibly try and think of a way, this deserves to have 5 stars next to its name. I absolutely loved this. More people should play it. I am 100% going to suggest this for the feature game next month.

To preface all of this, I got Ending #8. I escaped and I assume that the omniscient captive escaped too. I am fairly sure that the mistrusted captive didn't escape because the omniscient captive was a dick. Ah well. Let's see if I can decide which choices were actually important.
For one, not taking the chemicals at the start was obviously a good thing since I would've probably died had I chosen to do so. That's probably the worst ending that I can think of getting (assuming that it is an ending).
I suppose that choosing to take a shower at the start of the second day might've been a bad idea since the time my character wasted doing that could've probably being used to save Seth, as he wouldn't have been as far along in his gas-induced illness. Maybe not. That's definitely something to try if I play this again (I probably will). However, the mistrusted captive seemed pretty intent on sending the programs out at a specific time so... I'm not sure it would've had that much of an effect.
The choice of which terminal you can speak to aside from the one you're naturally linked too seems to be the major choice that directed me towards my ending. I chose to talk to the captive who wasn't trusted and this led to me being mocked at the end by the omniscient captive. Or so it seemed. I'd have to assume that Seth would tell that omniscient one who I'd chosen to talk to or that they would've been able to see me trying to talk to the mistrusted one after choosing that route. To be honest, though, I think I did the right thing. Even if it turned out that the mistrusted one had been a massive idiot by holding back on the information he had.
The other major choice is who to choose to release at the end of the game. I guess that choosing not to try and release Seth after he was gassed seemed obvious, that wouldn't have gotten me anywhere. I suppose I would've ended up being released anyway, since the mistrusted one would've probably released me anyway... but I'd have been released alone and that's a worse ending in my book.
What I actually did is choose to give the omniscient one their release code and hope that they'd release the mistrusted one too. I didn't think that they'd end up being such a douche about the whole thing. I suppose that I could've done this the other way around and put trust in the person who gave me the codes in the first place (although it is really easy to say that with hindsight), but would that've been any better? I'm not exactly sure. They could've ended up giving me my code anyway and that would've resulted in the omniscient one being forsaken - I'd still only end up with 2 escapees. Or the mistrusted one would give the omniscient one their code and this would show them that the mistrusted one was genuinely another captive, leading to them giving me my code in relief/apology?
At the end of it all, I can only assume that the omniscient one got free, as did I, with Seth dying due to the gas and the mistrusted one remaining trapped. That's a shame. I did my best to trust the mistrusted one, but ultimately I was underestimated just how much the mistrusted one was mistrusted. Ah well.

I'm glad you enjoyed it...! There are better endings, yeah, but any ending where you escape is a "good" ending. You're correct about the key choices: there are nine possible endings because the only choices that really matter are the communication and the escape codes. As for the review... you've pretty much written one already. I don't think people would mind reviews with spoilers as long as they're marked, because there are alternate paths to follow.
Oh, and if there were any bad typos, I detest typos and I'll fix them if they're pointed out.
This deserves a 5 star and a review. This game haves one of the best plots i have seen for an indie game.
(A question, this was programmed with java true??? Why dontyou try to port it to iphone????)

There weren't any bad typos, just the odd missing letter or letter being switched with another letter in the middle of a word. I don't think I saw any words where you'd spelt something wrong and it was obvious that it wasn't accidental. I'd have to play again to report them, I wasn't too bothered about it at the time.

I actually might try... The engine is relatively simple; it just reads and interprets a bunch of text files. The problem is that I don't have any Apple hardware to develop with. Android should be pretty easy though.

Okay, as long as it wasn't disruptive.
I played this an loved it, though I noticed on occasion that the wrong chatter was typing?
on ending #2, LICOZY messaged me, but the chatter said LCPANES. Was this intentional? *scratches head*)
Heh, well I got endings #1 and #2. I've been glued to my computer for the last hour playing it and usually I get distracted easily. I love how well-written it was.
You make me want to make a text based game D8.

Thanks. I went and fixed the online version, and the downloadable one should have that changed in a few hours. Bug reports are always appreciated.
Oh thank GOD you got rid of ZDC. Much more playable, much more entertaining. You should do more of this stuff.
I played three times before I got ending #8 (I think my other two were 2 and 7?) - and I set up communication with AV instead of LIZ on the run that granted me that.
Also on that run I tried to take the meds (you can't?) and I had a shower, those things made no difference whatsoever.
EDIT: I WANNA KNOW WHAT'S IN THE FAKE BOOK.
Edit #2: Just played again and got ending 9! I can't, at least off the top of my head, imagine what I need to do to get the rest of the endings, though.

Great, incredible story, good job man!
though i noticed some bugs:
i hope you can fix it, since it's really an amazing game!
though i noticed some bugs:
when you first use ACLIBR with LICOZY, then you choose to save Cecilia KUHOOH, i pressed K, but the programm instead, got SETH... i tried this 2 times, but still, it doesn't get it.. don't know if it's made to be this way, because of Cecilia..
the second problem is a little bit hard to explain, since i did it only once and don't remember much.. anyway, i choose ACLIBR with seth at first, but then, after a while, things changed and i couldn't talk anymore with seth, instead i was talking to both cecilia (she was responding me) and LICOZY...
oh yeah, one last thing, in the diary os elyse, when she explain who's behind each computer, she says that catherine is behind KUHOOH, but down some lines, she says Cecilia.. don't know if there was somebody before with the name catherine or it's a mistake so...
another little probable mistake is when Seth has been poisoned and he's copying the messagges from LICOZY with the codes for everyone.. oh, i'm gonna make a screen...http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/225/lcpanesbug1.jpg/

All fixed! It was a bug were if you tried to play again the game would always think you picked KUHOOK. If you refreshed the browser page or reloaded the app, it would go away. The downloads have been updated, thanks for your help.
Nice game, although the spelling/grammar, as well as some of the word choices, kinda let it down a bit. I've been through all the endings though, and while I understand not spelling out everything for the player, I feel a bit more explanation as to what the hell is going on would be good.
Also, (because I love tagging recommendations onto my posts apparently) if you like this game, you'd probably enjoy 999: 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors for the DS. They're very different games, but I think the tone of the story are very simple. There's a lot more exposition and stuff in 999, but the story as a whole is more elaborate so I suppose it all evens out.

I recompiled the script, ran it through some spelling/grammar checks, decompiled, and reuploaded to the online version. Most people were saying they weren't so bad, but ughh, why did I do this earlier, so many awful typos. Thanks for bringing this up. Oh, but if there were any specific weird word choices, I'd be happy to go and fix those as well.

I really need to grab a DS...
I played the offline version; was the other one more updated? Well, anyway, most of the mistakes were sentences that didn't make sense because of missing words and such. As for odd word choice, there were like three points after reading the computer that it says "well that's disturbing", or some variation of that. Just little things like that.
Okay, then I probably caught those mistakes. There's probably a few word omissions still in the wild though, not much I can do about that though expect fix them when they're pointed out. The word variation has been changed around too. I checked every instance of "that was" and changed about 80% of them. ...Wow, did I abuse that phrase.
(I can't believe nobody has said it yet...)
Congrats on being featured for August! I've never played this game before when Fallen-Griever mentioned this sometime back long ago...but I guess I should give this a shot, now. It's kind of cool to start seeing some visual novels get more respect here as of late. Hopefully, this will be a goodie! :D
