Alter A.I.L.A. Genesis takes place in a post-apocalyptic world. You play the role of a young man known as Leon, who seeks to survive in the harsh environment he is brought into.

Exploration is done mainly via a side-scrolling view. In certain areas, an exclamation mark will sometimes appear, indicating the presence of hostiles. Press Z when this happens to initiate battle, or wait to let it pass. Sometimes battle will be unavoidable. When walking, enemy encounters won't occur.

The battle system revolves mainly around each character's Abilities, which are a set of commands specific to that character. Abilities require AP and EX to use. AP is gained every time a character takes a turn. The default is 2. EX is gained every time a character uses an Ability. The default is 1. Note that this may change depending on the situation.

"Known Glitches"
Due to the limited functionality of the RPG Maker 2003 engine, there are various glitches and bugs which are unfortunately unfeasible or impossible to fix:
- Sometimes during an action, the battle data of a character will be temporarily overwritten with another character's, causing them to not perform as expected for that round.
- In certain cases, player actions can be interrupted by the enemy or other character's actions. To minimize the occurance of this, wait for current actions to finish before selecting an action with another character.
- Using items and guarding doesn't trigger the code to check for enemy deaths. You need to actually use an ability, or let the enemies take a turn.
- Although not a bug, Active Mode should be changed to Passive Mode in the in-game menu to prevent enemies from acting while you are taking an action.

"Hints and Tips for Boss Battles"
- Don't expect to just be able to spam regular attacks until you can use your Exceed ability. You won't win an attrition war with the enemy party.
- Always target the enemy's weakness if you can. If you want, think of this as a Shin Megami Tensei game. :P
- Make sure to keep your HP up. The vast majority of bosses have pretty powerful high EX costing abilities that'll wipe out your party if you're not expecting it.

- That said, keep in mind, the enemy is subject to the same rules as the party. In other words, they're also gaining AP and EX, and they also need it to use their more hard-hitting abilities. So if you can prevent them from using them while still retaining the ability to use yours, you'll be able to beat any boss.
- You can tell how much EX an enemy's ability uses by looking at the name of the ability. Similar to your character's abilities, it'll show up as the number of squares on the left side of the name.
- Of course, the above passes quickly so isn't that reliable of a method. As a general rule, you can expect that:
- Anything that uses an element other than Force likely costs at least 1 EX
- Anything that does multi-targetting likely costs at least 1 EX
- Anything that hits everyone hard probably costs 2 or more EX
- Anything that outright kills someone from full health, or makes you swear "Bullshit! That can't happen!" is likely an Exceed ability.
- Chances are it'll also be very flashy.
- Obviously, there's going to be some exceptions, but for the most part, this can be followed.

- Don't ignore Field Effects either. Bosses don't, and the Field Effects they use generally stack things in their favor. It's not just about dealing as much damage as quickly as you can. A lot of times, it's also about controlling the situation.
- Modes, Field Effects, and Boost ailments all stack. If you're creative, you may be able to create a situation where you can pretty much negate everything the boss throws at you, while tossing out Exceed abilities every turn. Bosses won't stand a chance.

MAP SAVE FREEZE: If you're changing things in this game in the editor and your save file freezes on the world map as a result, press F9, go to switch 112 and 113, and turn them both OFF. That should fix it.

Posts

In a previous post you mentioned something about one being in Inner Core 2 and another in No Man's Land, however I've searched through those areas already and can't find either. Are there any landmarks that you can tell me about their locations in those areas?

For Inner Core 2, you have to jump down from one of the walkways. It might be a little bit obscure.

For No Man's Land, he's at the top of the cliffs at the left side of the area. You'll have to pass through the flooded part to get to him.

Because of this, Dread was actually one of my favorite characters towards the end. I always got a kick out of those moments when one of the other group members would ask "why is this guy here again?". The resolution to his story was also very interesting and unexpected.

Haha really? I actually wanted to completely flip his entire personality, but then that just felt too weird.

Hey Neok, I duplicated that glitch in the Rebel Base.

Yep, I saw it. I'm gonna have to release a patch soon once I figure out where J-man got stuck jumping down.

Hmm, it's kinda interesting how ppl are placing their tiers. I've seen ppl say Erin and Indy are really useful, that Erin's useful but Indy sucks, that Indy's useful but Erin sucks, that both sucks, etc. Also looking forward to the review.

If anyone's wondering how to get the Comet Shard at Oberon Tower Ground Floor:
- press the switches in the following order: south, north, east, west, south.
- return to the room where you find SNEWS (get to the W switch, go down the steps to the right, go right once). It'll be just outside the room.
Oh, to answer your question on where I fell, it was in Avalon 1, it was a large room here there was a teleporter at the bottom section nothing else, there was a dead end and a spot to the left you jump down. (That wasn't the spot I got stuck at.

The spot beside the jump down and the teleporterish... its really hard to explain, I'll have to make a screenshot.

How in the world is anyone supposed to find that?! Clever play on words, but seriously. People need to be able to reasonably figure it out. Guide Dang It is a trope you do NOT want to use, ever.

And also, about my storyline questions...
I agree that Dread doesn't fit in with the gang at all, but someone like him does not just *go comatose* like he did in phase 5 for no reason. You can't just pull unordinary things like that with no explanation. Also the circumstances surrounding his Heel Face Turn -- I was honestly expecting Jake to have been the only one who turned, but brought Dread along by drugging him into a comatose state, and then when Dread wakes up he flips out but decides to become good(er) anyway. Pity most of his backstory was cut, I always hate it when subplots are cut like that. It leaves a feeling of emptiness, especially when you know there's supposed to be something there. :( I don't blame you though; I know making media is hard.

So the deal with Kugar *is* just open interpretation? :'( I felt that way about the end of The Giver as well... Oh well. Your call, after all. You do have to make sure that we have enough information *to* make an interpretation in the first place, though.

Speaking of character tiers, here's mine:

Top Tier: Violet (with a static-damage sync)
High Tier: Gray, Erin, Leon, Violet (without static-damage sync)
Mid Tier: Indy, Dread, Celia, Scott
Low Tier: Jake, Hawk

Jake just never really dealt enough damage for me. His handgun is pathetic, Voltage Dial is average, and Temporal Stasis is rather underwhelming compared to other EX attacks. Analyze is nice though.

Hawk also just doesn't have the same kind of power output... Orbital Assault and Indignant Variati are very similar, and only deal around 4000 damage total for me. Not to mention he has to activate them. Gray's Buster Cannon routinely deals around 9000 damage for me, and Leon's Blast Revolver deals ~7700 damage even without a static-damage sync. I've heard he has high HP growth, but Gray is also a tank, so...

I think that the reason people dislike Indy so much is because she's the frailest of any character, and that her only use (equipping a static-damage sync and spamming Vampire) is rendered obsolete by Violet, who is better at it (9 hits instead of 5) and, while still being fragile, not made of wet paper.

Anyway, Neok did a much better job of balancing characters this time around, but some are still more useful than others, it seems.

(By the way, Celia is an incredibly boring character combat-wise. Her skills are all direct-damage spells of increasing power. Her skills are literally just "charge ammunition for my spells, hit something, hit something harder, hit something even harder, and hit everything really really hard". I presume that she will not be the character that is cut for Variant, so are you planning on rectifying this, Neok?)

Somehow I came up with the solution myself - it is possible without a guide :)
Firstly, this is the only area in which switches are not disabled permanently after you use them. Secondly, the magazine's title is made of letters used to denote the four cardinal points. Put two and two together and it becomes quite clear :)

New questions:
- how do you get Jeeves, Tinder, and Aila?
- is there a Joker for Leon?
- whose Joker is in Inner Core Shaft 2?
- will I have to play the whole game again to get any of the above (hope not)?

1. Secret characters are unlocked by getting the extra abilities for all of your characters from the Jokers. They'll unlock with each ability you get.
2. Yes.
3. I don't remember, maybe Leon's? I think I remember getting his extra EX move from there...
4. No.

I have all the Jokers except Leon's and am still missing those characters. Going over the list:

Inner Core 2 - ???
Abandoned City - Erin
No Man's Land 2 - Indy
No Man's Land - Gray
Orbital Prison 3 - Violet
Sewers - Jake
Main Prison - Red
Rebel Base Prison - Hawk
Slums - Silvra
Bridge Facility - ??? (Jeebes)
Warehouses - Reeves
Oberon Tower - Kugar
Factory - ??? (Tinder)
Underwater Facility - ??? (Aila)

It seems that I'm only missing the one from Core Shaft 2, but I've already searched it high and low and there's no Joker. I might've already collected him, but got a skill for someone else than Leon. Or I might've missed him entirely. Do you remember where that Joker is hiding in Core Shaft 2?

Thought I should start creating some visual aid, so here it is for Leon's Joker :

Could use some help with embedding the actual video into the post, but I think this will do for now.

Took a while to load up 1 minute of just walking around in AAG and 40 MB of data. Kind of hope the long fight with the Behemoth can actually fit the requirements.

Also found out that I missed the shards from Avalon, didn't expect any to be there. Managed to get the one in Avalon 1, but 2's giving me some trouble since it's even more of a maze than 1 is, to me. Some hints might help, even a sense of which direction to head towards.

Thanks a ton! That was very easy to miss. Now it turns out I'm missing a Shard to get Jeebes's Joker... >_<

I can help with Avalon 2, though! Give me a minute and I'll upload a minimap I made to help me find that Shard. On second thought it is so easy to describe in words that I'll do just that.

Once you get to the save point, instead of going right to where the boss was, turn left and jump down the ledge. Go left and jump from another ledge and use the orange teleporter. Left again, jump down, and left for the last time.

BTW, it seems that after you solve the SNEWS puzzle at Oberon Tower Ground Floor a Shard appears before every statue by the offices, not just in the west wing, for a total of 4 Shards. Very funny, Neo Kuriyo >:|
Hate to say this, but I'm actually having trouble finding the exit to Avalon 2 again. I don't really remember this area well at all.

OK, detailed instructions:
Right, jump down, change the switch to Red, left to Red Teleporter, right, jump down, right to Red T, right, jump down, right, jump down, right to Red T, right to Red T, right, jump down, change the switch to Orange, left, jump down, left to Orange T (be sure not to change the switch which will be Orange too! it's the first you find after jumping down), left to Orange T, right to Orange T, right to Orange T, and you are now at the save point. Keep going left and jumping down until you find another Orange T, then it's left again, jump down, left and here is your Shard.

Thanks, although I did figure it out myself right after I posted that.

Turns out I forgot about the shards in the Sphere. Didn't expect there to be any left in there so I didn't check. I'll appreciate help on Areas 2 and 3.

Sphere 2 - when you get to the save point just before the boss, follow the directions: enter the door, go left, go left to the item crystal and examine the hole in the wall

Sphere 3 - this one's a mess and is best done during your first visit so you don't have to redo this annoying level. Begin by getting to the save point before the boss. Now go: down the ladder, into the door on the bottom right, down the ladder and into the door, right and into the door, right and down the ladder that's just next to the entrance).
While passing through Sphere 2 a second time, found a small glitch with the red indicator.

Yeah, now I remember why I hated this place ( damn red barriers ). I loaded my save from the latest demo, and back then I didn't really realize how important finding the secrets will be.

Missing Tinder and one other, and I'm pretty sure I've got all the Jokers for everyone else. Anyone know how to unlock them?

You unlock secret characters by collecting Joker skills. The last 3 Jokers you get will net you the last 3 characters (Jeebes, Tinder, Aila). Here's the list of Jokers:

Inner Core Shaft 2 - Leon (see Missileboater's video above)
Abandoned City - Erin
No Man's Land 2 - Indy
No Man's Land - Gray
Orbital Prison 3 - Violet
Sewers - Jake
Main Prison - Red
Rebel Base Prison - Hawk
Slums - Silvra
Bridge Facility - Jeebes
Warehouses - Reeves
Oberon Tower - Kugar
Factory - Tinder
Underwater Facility - Aila

Needless to say you need ALL the Shards in the game. You can't miss even one.

A few details regarding their locations.

Inner Core Shaft 2 - Leon (see Missileboater's video above)
Abandoned City - Erin (easy to find, it's a straightforward area)
No Man's Land 2 - Indy (in plain sight)
No Man's Land - Gray (reach the boss and go right)
Orbital Prison 3 - Violet (don't remember, sorry, but you should stumble upon him during your visit there anyway)
Sewers - Jake (don't remember, but he shouldn't be hard to find)
Main Prison - Red (at Red's "home")
Rebel Base Prison - Hawk (go up the ladder where Erin and co were being held capture)
Slums - Silvra (in plain sight)
Bridge Facility - Jeebes (outside the complex, easy to find)
Warehouses - Reeves (don't remember, but he should be easy to find)
Oberon Tower - Kugar (in the room next to the save point on floor 100)
Factory - Tinder (go down the first ladder you see and enter the door)
Underwater Facility - Aila (in plain sight, you can't miss her)

Needless to say you need ALL the Shards in the game. You can't miss even one.
Ah, thanks for giving me the list. I realized that I found Reeve's Joker in the Warehouse, but never actually gave it the shards, which was why I thought I got him already.

Oh and Neok, I got what you were asking for:
Behemoth Hard Mode
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcMg0w06BfM

Could have been quicker if I wasn't being so cautious and remembered that Erin can take an unguarded hit at full HP, but I think it'll do.

Have to give some credit to ARP, wouldn't have thought of using Toxication Field nor the Al Di La sync if he didn't mention it.

One last thing, I was disappointed when all I got was a Revival Field B.
And also, about my storyline questions...

I know I know.. to tell you the truth, I tried initially to make proper explanations. It was sapping my will to finish the game, so eventually I just gave up and said okay, I'm just gonna have to be more careful with characters next time.

(By the way, Celia is an incredibly boring character combat-wise. Her skills are all direct-damage spells of increasing power. It's kinda meant to reflect her character a bit :P. Sortof like "Forget strategy, just blow them all away with MAX POWER" kinda thing. In AAV, well, you'll see..

Thanks for the heads-up. Yeah, that's from back when you could re-fight bosses at anytime. Fixed.

Insane man. Truly insane. Alright, I'll pm you.

One last thing, I was disappointed when all I got was a Revival Field B.

Like I said, I never intended for anyone to actually fight him this way :P.
Thanks, pretty much makes up for the crap item reward. At least it was something, not like Omega Weapon in FFVIII.

By the way, I think my pride is getting to me after that.

Shadow Ultima pretty much annihilated my party when I tried to use combat items to get rid of the Ultima Bits. Should have known that the same trick wouldn't work twice.

I'll convert the links into embedded videos if it'll be helpful, kind of thinking of making videos of optional bosses of Orbital Prison, as some of them have nasty tricks.
So I just got hawk after the dam and I can't seem to activate his
higher tiered abilities, even though I had the right amount of EX and AP,
it's kinda frustrating, I do if it is going to correct itself or not, because
I understand that you mentioned that sometimes character data gets
overwritten by another and have them act not as you expect them to, though
the problem is persisting...

Sorry but I couldn't get the hide tags to work.

EDIT: nvm got it, you have to use telekinesis.
