There is now a website you can use to share your custom content with other users! But you're still welcome to use this page to share and discuss content.

Below is a list of finished custom (user-made) content. To add these characters, in most cases you can extract the downloaded file to the game's main directory and you're set. Depending on how the author has organized them, it may be necessary to move files to the appropriate directories. (Custom content has not been tested by me)
Note: After new content has been added, old saves won't be compatible.

If you have posted custom content in this thread, I will (eventually) add your link to the list above, along with a small screenshot if you have included one. Be sure to test your content in-game before posting.

Helpful things:

--> Medium build girl, the .psd that was used to create the built-in characters, is available with layer names in English.

--> Not feeling artistic? You can use any of these images for making custom characters.

--> Notepad++ with syntax highlighting for Heartache 101 can be a big help with story creation.

--> If you are writing story content that includes the appearance of existing characters (built-in or custom), the following list may be of reference:
ID 0 = The Player
ID 1 = Nakajima Miki
ID 2 = Ikeda Keika
ID 3 = Onishi Tsubasa

I can't say what the issue is with any of the other custom content, but Masako was able to be uploaded without hassle. I wonder how much trouble Emiko is going to have?

Speaking of Emiko, I should be doing a test-run of her story sequence very soon. Maybe even today-soon. What's that? You want a preview of what she looks like? Forget it! Half the fun is in the mystery of what she looks like, after all!
Is there some way to allow for generic train encounters, but not generic school encounters? My next three characters are all girls who go to another school.
About the upload problem, I think I found a simple solution that allows real users to upload files of any type while being mostly hidden to spammers :)

@Marrend
I guess that's true, huh? In that sense maybe the screenshots here and on the website do a disservice.

@Nekochi
There's not a way to do that, I'm afraid. But if characters that go to a different school are going to be popular among content creators, maybe there needs to be?

With the current build, I would have to say "no". When ENCOUNTERS = ON, a character gets the full range of generic encounters: run-ins at school, run-ins in the train, getting advise events, all that stuff. With ENCOUNTERS = OFF, the characters gets none of these things.

Even if it was possible to just enable train encounters, if I recall my help file correctly, getting a phone number from a character disables train encounters with that character.

I'm uncertain if it's necessary to use OTHER slots to simulate the "chance meeting on a train" situation you might be aiming for, but you may want to be prepared for that contingency.

*Edit: This is looking kind weird not being right after Nekochi's latest post, but it was supposed to be a response to it.

*Edit2:

flowerthief, you realize I'm saying this because Emiko is not done with the "medium build girl" that everyone else has been using? Well, there's Animetor's various postings, but Emiko differs from that style as well. Ergo, half the fun is the mystery of what she looks like.

That's true. (I made that generic train encounter in the first place to provide more opportunities for the player to get phone #'s he doesn't yet have)

But the problem is how to allow the generic actions, such as "Ask name", "Ask phone #" and "Just chat". I suppose you could sort of simulate it with your own custom story event...if only the event were repeatable. Would custom repeatable events be useful to you guys? The functionality for that is already in the system, but it hasn't been tested.

I'm still thinking in the confines of a character story rather than a generalized event, but here's what I'm thinking about the train situation: The conversation options, and the responses thereof, would still have to be hard-coded. However, it seems to me that one could cause a some kind of condition, like CONDITION = 4 DONE, in order just to get the event. At the end of the train event, have a CONDITION = 4 NOT DONE to re-enable the event. Well, it's a theory that I haven't at all tested, but if it should work...

Okay, that's fine. I guess that just means I'll be writing less custom responses and more story events.

By the way, I'm creating three best friends. Their names are Ran Fujioka, Torako Koizumi, and Yumemi Sato. I haven't decided what the name of their school is yet, but I know it's fancier than the one the player goes to. (Speaking of which, does his school have a name? Cause it would make sense if at one point one of them said something like, "Judging by your uniform, I'd say you went to, blahblah, right?" And if they knew what school he went to, it would mean they could surprise meet him after school.)

I was considering something like this, actually. Maybe not go so far as to meet the player character after school, but at least have a character say, "That's a high school uniform, isn't it? Such-and-such High, right?"

In other news:
Who's the best mechanic on the Kamiyama?
It's gotta be the Toshie-chan!
You know it's true!

More serious:
Since the file is over 10MB, there's no way I can upload the character to the other site, even if I wanted to. Then again, as this is a first release, I expect there to be kinks, bugs, random misspellings, and grammar issues.

This probably is the last custom character I'll make on my own for this game. I've decided to relegate myself to testing other people's custom content, helping with custom content (graphics, story, what-not), or just generally being the resident expert at the creation of custom content.
By the way, how do you get a date that's arranged by the girl? I've never been able to. Is it arranged by phone or in person or what? (I kind of wanted to know if I should bother writing responses for those situations for Ran, Torako, and Yumemi.)

Edit:
Also, one of my characters is super ladylike, so I'm wondering if "fufun" would be too Japanese a sound effect for laughter. I was also thinking of "oho" or "ohoho", if either one of those is better. I want an onomatopoeia that suggests very refined and feminine laughter, but I don't want to do something that is too foreign for most people to understand or comes off as "weeabooish." However, I'm having trouble coming up with a "Western" equivalent, as "heehee" seems a little too childish and silly for what I'm trying to go for. (It's extremely likely that I'm way over thinking this.)

I've never had a character arrange a date either, but I suspect it might be one of those things that's unlocked with the number of dates set up by the player character. As a quick example, I think it might take three or so dates before the character begins suggesting eating out (somebody may correct me on this, though).

As for a refined laugh, maybe "hmmm-hmm-hmm"? I dunno. That might be construed as pauses in thought more than laughing.
@Marrend
I confess, I'm peeking ahead at the tachie before trying Emiko in-game. Yikes, how many watermelons has she got under her shirt? Two wouldn't be enough to produce that topography.

It would only work if events could be made to be repeatable. As it stands now, no custom story event can be played twice.

It's definitely helpful having you around to field questions, and I'm sure others will appreciate having testers for their content, too.

Eating out can happen from the second date on, but it's a random occurrence.

The girl needs to be in a Love state exactly (not Lovesick) and the player either needs to have a date set up with another girl that day, or it needs to be Saturday. Even then there's lots of chance involved.

I neglected to give the school a name. I hope that doesn't create conflicts for content creators!

I can understand your desire to peek, considering how under-wraps I was about Emiko's look. Suffice it to say, it's quite an embarrassing affair. Regardless of embarrassment, I think Emiko's STORY 5 might yet hold a surprise for players.

It would only work if events could be made to be repeatable. As it stands now, no custom story event can be played twice.

The theory was that if STORY X just has a "CONDITION = X DONE" line can be played (Note that the CONDITION to run the STORY has not yet been satisfied!), then a STORY X with just a "CONDITION = Y NOT DONE" should work in a similar fashion. Since it's quite possible to get events out of STORY ID number order.... Never mind. I'm thinking too much.

Anyway, I was thinking about custom backgrounds, and having a character go through a range of emotions. With the current build, one must make a separate tachie for each emotional state against said custom background. This inevitably causes the character's download to get increasingly large with each iteration of emotion. What I propose is a CUSTOM BACKGROUND, or a REPLACE BACKGROUND line. Or something to that effect. Whatever you wish to call it, it would over-write the backdrop of the current PLACE and replace it with the file being referenced. I'd think the most probable location for a file like this would be the tachie directory for the character, but I suppose a certain amount of variability in file location is somewhat desirable.

I made a test ZIP using this theory with Emiko. The overall download size only goes down by about 1 MB. She's only got one custom background, so a character with more than one custom background would benefit tremendously.
Yeah, it could come to that, if people want that feature. I would need some assurance that it would be used for more than saving 1 MB for one character before I go to the trouble of adding it.

If you don't mind the tachie displayed in the left or right position, here's something else you can do:
Use a dummy character to serve as a host for OTHER pics and display a custom background in this way with SHOW CENTER. Then display the tachie for any other characters you like in front of this background with SHOW RIGHT or SHOW LEFT.

Fair enough.

You mean use one character's NEUTRAL pose (or whatever) for the background, set that in the CENTER, then use SHOW LEFT or SHOW RIGHT for anyone that would show up? Duh! Why didn't I think of that earlier? It won't save me much space, but if there is a need to update Emiko (bugs fixes, grammar issues, etc), I will totally use that technique!
I need to come up with more ideas for Ran, Torako, and Yumemi. I know where the initial meeting takes place and I have that event all written out. Now I just need to come up with some meetings after that. Why is that so hard? XD

Now I just need to come up with some meetings after that. Why is that so hard?

The "Bludgeon of Inspiration" says:
First, you need a place for the player and character to meet. I'd suggest having them meet up in a "favored location" for the first couple of events. There's two kinds of "favored locations". One is derived from the character's stat proclivities. I figure that if a character has at least a "B" in something, he or she could hang out in locations where that stat is buffed. The other is derived from the more obvious "GOOD LOCATIONS" field. If a character "likes" a location, then the possibility of running across said character in that location should be sufficient enough for a story setting.

What the character would say, or how the character would react, would depend greatly on the conceptualization of the character's personality.
I've made sure the girls have a few overlapping places that they all love. I mean, if they didn't like the same places, where would they go to hang out together? And then I went ahead and made a list of all the places that none of them hate. I should probably make lists of loved places that two of them like. And probably a list of loved places unique to each girl. Perhaps that will give me a few more ideas.

Oh, hey! Emiko's up on the other site now! Now even more people will make non-commentary about her! Thanks, flowerthief!
^ Well now that the game is complete, hopefully users outside RMN will start discovering it and there will be more downloading and uploading of custom characters.

And if you happen to know where on the internet the kind of people who are into datesims are all hanging out, feel free to tell them about this game!

flowerfthief, perhaps you should update the "other site" link on the main content of this page as to not confuse people with the site mentioned in your latest blog?
