In a kingdom covered in snow, in a kingdom where the snow never melts and never goes away, there lives a prince who keeps watch over his kingdom and resolves to maintain peace. When the prince learns that his family’s history isn’t as spotless as he had been told, he endeavors to fix what his family had done wrong and to ensure the continual peace of his kingdom. This will lead the prince to battling the phantoms that prowl the lands, to saving a princess, and to realizing the secrets of his family and his kingdom.

The entire game takes place in Sabine Kingdom and the island that it rests on. The island is constantly shrouded in snow, but for some reason, no one ever feels cold. Plants continue to grow despite the snow, so there is no danger of a food shortage. There has never been a need to question this, so the residents of Sabine Kingdom are blissfully unaware.

Though of course, our prince--Snowe--is not blissfully unaware any longer. A dream leads him to combing through his parents' library and learning that something is amiss. What is our prince to do except try and fix what he had found? He can't just sit back and pretend like he hadn't read about a girl being locked in a tall tower where she may one day die from flames that threaten to burn her. No, he can't do that at all.

Did you like SSP and wanted more? Do you like reading??

Because of reasons, I've finally uploaded the sequel web novel, Ephemeral Prince to itch.io as an EPUB and a PDF. So, if you wanted to ever read Ephemeral Prince on your phone and not connected to the internet, now you can!

I figured this warrented a blog post, so I hope those who liked the game and liked the sequel will enjoy Ephemeral Prince on the go.

Maybe one day I'll make a game again, but today is not that day! Enjoy some old ass writing because it's like 10 years old! (which means SSP is older ugh)

Damn. Around the point that I discovered you could, if you wanted, polish the dishes of every one of your subjects, I decided that this was probably the most charming RPG Maker VX game I've ever played. Then I found an out-of-the-way snowman that gave my character his blessings and I discovered that this game was even better than I thought.

I don't think I've been this impressed by an RPG Maker game for quite a while. Polished, heartwarming, well-written and occasionally very creepy. Can't wait for the finished version!

What? Unsurprisingly, I never tried to do this (it's a weird thing to do!) but it does explain a comment I got when I inspected the dishes in the tower later in the game that I thought was really weird and inexplicable at the time!
I love this game!
I think the best thing about it is how it manages to convey the feeling of "too good to be true" about its setting.

But... I was so happy to finally have more than one party member, and then the boss raped me. :(
Still, I've seen that being level four should be alright, so I'll try again before grinding.

I still haven't gotten past that boss.

Are you guys good equipped against being frozen? Astra has the cloak by default, you can find a cloak in the tower and some mittens! Make sure Snowe and Hiante has at least one of those equipped.

Snowe should also have both his skills (Flame I and Cure I) and should be delegated to doing Cure I if someone needs it or just blasting the bird with Flame I. Astra should have Recover from her cloak (if not, reequip the cloak to make it show up because of the bug), and have her do that when she needs to, otherwise use her Swift Slash. Hiante should be the one debuffing the boss with the Cornet and Mask and doing whatever else needs to be done in between (he's not the most useful in the fight except he's fast). And then poisoning the bird with the skill from Erio's Spare Suit (which Snowe should have equipped) will help to keep the boss getting harmed even if you have to have a turn where everyone is healing or revive herbing people.

Since the bird starts to use blizzard more when his HP is low (like below 20%), by then you should have Astra focus on the healing because she can heal everyone (and it's almost guaranteed her IP gauge will be filled back up so she can use it) and have Snowe keep up the Flame I attacks and Hiante should continue doing whatever you made him do.

Level 4 are the levels I balanced that boss at, even though he still packs a punch (I mean, he's guarding the exit of the Forest, you weren't supposed to come out of the forest, I think he's more than a bit pissed!). I think I will tweak him a bit if you guys still have trouble. It's really hard to determine that though--some people only need to get thrashed around once before they get the hang of it, but others continually have trouble. And some people get it right the first time. @_@ Though I don't actually use the poison strategy because I really forgot I made him prone to getting poisoned.

I don't think you should necessarily make the boss that much weaker just because I died a few times. I will keep trying.

It's really his all attacks that are crushing me, Blizzard and his regular all-attack. They do about 3/4 of the health of each of my guys so unless I keep everyone's health full at all times...yeah.

Anyway, yeah, just because I have lost twice doesn't necessarily make the boss too hard.

Snowe should also have both his skills (Flame I and Cure I)

I have them, but it would really suck to be stuck in a unwinnable situation because I didn't do something in the very first part of the game... Can I suggest you to put another way to learn them in the tower?
So people who didn't get them at the beginning aren't forced to start over...

Anyway, I'll try again later and let you know how it goes!

Max: Well it's just that I have heard that more than I want to hear it (and again, I am balancing him based on the idea everyone grabs the cornet and the mask--I haven't actually tried him WITHOUT getting those two items or just not using them, but if you didn't get it, you're making Snowe out to be a jerk who doesn't say bye to his people before he leaves to go die in the snow). You would benefit from having the mask for sure. The cornet helps lessen his regular all-attack so you can cut that down. Blizzard he is supposed to do less than Ice in the beginning (until you get him down to 20% HP and then he'll be spamming it). But yeah, even though you've only got a game over twice, it leaves me thinking in terms of how you are doing compared to other complaints/comments I have gotten.

But in short, when I have beta-testers go through, I'll make sure they tell me frankly about how hard my bosses are (I balance my bosses with the question: "did I die when I was being smart (using my skills right, debuffing, buffing right, etc)? No? Then it's balanced for me") and then think about if I'm making them too hard. Because there are a few people who aren't good at fighting the bird (one of my beta-testers just couldn't do it, but another said as soon as she figured out what to do, she was able to win).

Cozzer: If you talk to Richard and Vera before you leave, they tell you to grab them. Personally I wonder if it's my duty to cater to players who didn't explore when I give them multiple things to be on the look out for (you can dust your kingdom's dust laden dishes, that should be hinting at you can explore quite a bit and shouldn't skip over exploring). I don't want to hold the players' hands when playing my game. After the demo ends and after a small dungeon, you can always grab Snowe's skills from the castle again. And I never put the skills in a place that can never be reached again (and if I do, I make sure if you miss it, they do appear elsewhere). One thing I may do is have Richard flat out tell STOP you from leaving Sabine if you've forgotten your skills.

In addition, having two random fire spellbooks floating around the tower just seems odd. Astra nor Hiante have any use for them! D: But yeah, I'll definitely take your suggestion to heart and hammer it into the players' heads NOT to forget them and even going so far as to make Richard stop you from leaving if you did forget them. I figure since it is the first spells you get, perhaps that is a good idea. Players may not be accustomed to having to look for their skills (something I probably should have thought of more) so having it so that you can't forget Snowe's first two may be far more helpful than your adviser reminding you only if you talk to him and so on and so forth.

I wish you had not encrypted the project file so I could just cheat my way past. : P

I really hate when people encrypt, it's a pet peeve of mine, but if you have lots of original graphics that you're trying to protect I totally understand (even if I don't agree; more things really should be open source, since you're giving the game away for free anyway).

But that's a topic for another day.

I don't think you have any "duty".
But I'll say this: even though I love your game (seriously, I love it) if the only answer to not being able to go on was starting over and redoing everything just because I didn't check a bookshelf, I don't think I would do it.

(In other news, I'm not sure I've gotten every item from the villagers. My Snowe is a jerk. :( )

Edit: Ok, the boss killed me again, but this time I had a fair chance. Maybe the only thing that's actually overpowered is its "blizzard" attack... it oneshots my Snowe and freezes the skeleton guy, leaving me with only one active party member...

;_; You're making Snowe into a jerk, Cozzer. Snowe isn't supposed to be a jerk! (Though you probably did get the gifts perhaps--couples give you a joint gift and siblings also give you a joint gift, so it's not like you'll have an item from every single person, just every single couple/sibling pair/lone kid or whatever).

But yes, I'll probably make it so you can't accidentally forget Snowe's first skills. The other ones are fair game however because I figure by then players should realize they are floating around random places as indicated by a little book sprite that looks out of place. And not usually in bookcases <_<.

And again, you don't have the mittens or the cloak equipped on Hiante do you? If he doesn't, he's going to freeze (and so will Snowe if he doesn't have either of them too if he's not one shotted). Though it shouldn't one shot Snowe, so I think I will tweak that a bit cause it really shouldn't even if he's weak against ice/water. Though it might if you didn't debuff the thing's magic... I think I will tweak that a bit because those items aren't able to be gotten again and that would make me a real evil game designer if I haven't reached that level already.

I have just two of them, and I found them both in bookshelves. °°
If I rememeber well, the little book sprites out of place never gave me anything.

Anyway: Snowe has mittens that protect him from being frozen, but I didn't have any equipment for the other party members except for the one they started with. °° (And a Bone Armor that I equipped on Hiante)

Anyway, I'll try grinding to Level 5 since it doesn't seem I have much of a chance otherwise.

Haha yeah Snowe's the only one who has them in bookshelves. And I really lied because I just remembered there are three others later in the game. So nevermind about that point.

The book out of place I meant was the one you found in the room Snowe woke up in while in the Tower. That looks out of place to me, so maybe I wasn't clear on what I meant. So perhaps just disregard my rambling up there.

And you missed the Cozy Mantle in the Tower then in the room where you go on star glyphs and get teleported to another part of the map. There's a hidden passage through a wall to another glyph that leads you to the cozy mantle. But yeah, if you're having trouble, level 5 might be a good idea. At least then you'd have more HP to take a beating at the very least. Though, you didn't get Erio's Spare Suit? It's in the chest he's near when you find him in the tower.
Progress update: I've gotten Snowe to level 5, so he could (barely) survive a blizzard. While I was doing that, I accidentally found the Cozy Mantle for Hiante.

Then I went against the boss again, and I survived the blizzard! But then he decided to make a follow-up attack and killed me. :(

Next time, I'll make it.

(I have Erio's Spare Suit equipped on Snowe. °°)

Progress update 2: I won!
With Snowe at level 5 and the Cozy Mantle for Hiante, the difficulty felt just about right.

Progress update 3: And now the demo is over. :(
Good luck with the rest of the game!
Sounds like I'm the only one who didn't have trouble with the boss. Glad you guys got passed it! I think it was easy for me because I'm used to bosses of that caliber, as rare as it is to find a game that has them. It could of been the fact I explored to get all the items, or it could of been the fact I'm a veteran at this sort of thing, or even a bit of both.

Anyways, feel free to comment on the difficulty. Considering I had no trouble at all with the game myself (felt just right), and the fact others are having difficulty, I can't really say myself.

Hurray, you got through the demo Cozzer! Now we should hope the same for Max McGee.

But yes, anyone who has played the demo: don't feel shy about telling me if you legitimately think something is too hard (there is a difference between it being too hard or you not doing it right, but I figure you are all smart folks and are able to tell the difference!). I'm always second guessing myself on balancing so any thoughts about it is very welcome.
I think the difficulty is just right. After all, Snowe was almost at level 5 on his own, so I didn't have to grind more than a couple of minutes; with Snowe able to survive the blizzards, the boss was hard but fair.

The only issue I see, as I said before, is making sure nothing that can be "lost forever" is vital.

I think I mentioned this before, but I'd already spent the entire prologue exploring town, and I wasn't much feeling like going back and doing it again! Really, the only reason I DID do it was because I was beta-testing and wanted to see if anything was breaking.

Also, I don't think it's considered hand-holding if you make the game beatable for people who wouldn't play it like you would! xD I think it's okay to reward players for exploration, but to outright punish them seems pretty cruel. ;n;
I say make it easier to beat the boss if you've gotten the Child's Cornet and Scary Mask and the other fancy items from your dudes, but don't make it necessary. Not everyone is going to want to explore, and shutting those people out from your game is going to thin your audience considerably.

(I like the idea of Richard outright stopping you from leaving Sabine if you didn't get your skills - I missed getting Cure I because I never actually found where you were supposed to get it, and that definitely made my life harder, especially because I don't remember there being a place for me to buy potions!
...of course there may have been one and my brain is too mushy to remember it now, anyway. OTL)

There was an item shop, Emmy. XD But yeah, I'll do a bit of rethinking. I think my problem is that I balance a game to how I play the game which includes exploring the heck out of maps and using buffs and debuffs when they actually work and make that part of my strategy against bosses, etc.

I'd already spent the entire prologue exploring town, and I wasn't much feeling like going back and doing it again!

That's also true.
I just completely ignored the villagers, went into the dungeon, then went back to the village after a few fights to buy some healing items, then a guy gave me a present and I thought "Hey, maybe other people will give me things!" and went around colleting items.

But I was very near to missing all those items entirely.
