Princess Princess is about a group of two men and two women who are on a quest in search of the (Dragon) King's daughter. However, they don't know what she looks like.
STORY (2.5/5) The story is not at the same level as the storyline of games such as Tales of Symphonia (Nintendo GameCube) or Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii). However, a lot of people could be surprised when they find out what the real reason is why The King wants his daughter back and who the real Evil Overlord is.
CHARACTERS (3/5) It seems that the designers behind the game were inspired by (generic) Shonen Anime shows. You got:
-Erik, the wannabe casanova-type, but funny perverted Warrior ('Bros before hoes, man!')
-Remius, the calm and Bishonen magic swordsman that, presumably, has an ill sister he needs to take care of (but goes off on a quest in order to get enough cash to give her medicine or something - I'm just guessing).
-Elicia, the voluptuous maiden and Tank-character of the group who often gets in arguments with Erik (mostly about Sairen's gender).
- Naia, a cute demon girl and speedster of the group who speaks in third-person ('Naia can't remember her name!').
-Sairen, the androgynous, fifth and optional member of the group whose gender is constantly questioned by Erik and Elicia. He/She can use the arts of alchemy which means it can create items by sacrificing an amount of MP. Sarien is probably the Only Sane (Wo)Man of the group as it lampshades the cliché and ridiculous parts of the story and its characters.
The characters are not original, neither are they complex, but they can be quite funny and appealing. There were some moments in the game I had to laugh out loud because the interactions between the characters were so amusing and hilarious.
The villains are also interesting except the King for he's the love-child of Bowser and Doofenshmirtz.
GAMEPLAY (4/5)
It's basic, just the way I like it :) !!! However, if the full version of ACE comes, I hope the designers will pimp the battle system up - as in showing the facesets of the Playable Characters during battle or using a script in which you can use all the 5 characters in battle except of just using the first 4.
GRAPHICS (3/5)
It's average. It's 2D which is fantastic, but it uses the simple RTP charsets from the VX ACE program. It's justified though, due to the Trial's monstrous limitations. The same could be said about the world map. I like the fact that it scrolls and repeats itself - like a globe. The downside is... it looks so small. I can't believe an entire world population lives in two villages and some houses spread across the lands. This is something the designers can work on when the full RMVX ACE version comes ;)!!!
MUSIC (4/5)
Despite the fact that music comes from the RTP, it's very good! It loops smoothly and it kinda sounds better than some of the music you hear in RPG Maker XP and VX's RTP. The music also fits to the atmosphere, the cut scenes and the places where the heroes are.
OVERALL (3.5)
Princess Princess is the first RPG Maker VX ACE game known to this community. It won't win awards for innovation, but the game's simpleness and colourful cast will charm you and hopefully motivate you to fight till you no longer can continue for this game is a 'demo'. 'Team Princess Princess,' I wish you good luck ;)!
Cheers!

As owner and operator of this site, the buck does stop here (unfortunately?).
So yeah, I kind of am the arbiter of what constitutes civil behaviour here. (Unless there is some sort of neutral third party moderation services company that I can hire?)

Well, not really. Unless you've played the game you wouldn't know or be able to guess. The king might want to marry his daughter off to some guy and the evil overlord might be a cute fuzzy bunny. He might want her back for a sacrificial offering and the EO may be the queen. Maybe he wants something she took with her back and the EO is trapped inside said item. Maybe she's the EO and he wants her back so he can contain her. There's a hell of a lot of possibilities.
(Yeah, I've played it and know the answers to both. No, I've not listed them.
...Or have I? =D )
@megaheroes: it's not a bad review but you could expand some of the shorter parts a bit more. I too was a bit surprised that all you basically had to say about the gameplay was that it was basic. There were things you could have expanded on like the Alchemy system, the puzzles and battles. Glad that someone else is also writing reviews, though. Keep at it!

author=alteregoauthor=kentonaOh yeah? Well, you are not arbiter of what constitutes uncivil behavior...
And I will deal with uncivil behaviour.
Even if you personally disagree with something. You should not try to rationalize your personal distaste into some quasi-objective rule... to...
Oh, cheez, whatever. This is hopeless.
Edit: In case is hard to tell, I was half-joking. Yes, Kentona, I know you own this place. That's very good for you... =P
Edit: In order to elaborate... It is often said: "Be the change you want to be" or something like that. And Fallen-Griever is the change he wants to be when it comes to reviews, that's where his "weird pride thing" comes from, but how well is that working for him exactly? He witnesses how the standards of reviews drop over time despite his efforts... Now, I don't like his shitty ways to say things either, but 1) I can see past that. and 2) Since when do we care about the quality of our posts when we don't care about quality where it matters the most?
And the fact that these "less than stellar" reviews are often written by new member in the community is really not an excuse, they already have an example set by older reviewers, they have whole guides on the subject available for them to read, and after all they have eyes, ears, and a brain of their own. So why does this happen then? And what is it being done to fix it?
I'm torn on this issue, really, I like to think that "All feedback is good feedback" but I don't exactly subscribe to the "Every review is a gift" school of thought. I wish the people that run this place weren't so hasty to accept everything that comes their way and actually encouraged people to improve their submission before they ultimately accept them... Does this happen? I don't know. I doubt it...
RMN's mission statement:
To be the definitive source for the RPG Maker series, its history, its future; to provide a platform for amateur game developers to grow and succeed no matter their skill level; and to forge an open-minded community that can share experiences, best practices, and constructive criticisms.
F-G's first critic wasn't like that, you can't expect people that are subpar right now to create awesome reviews, it all takes time. If we want the site to keep on going with activity, we have to be more patient and guide these people and let them edit their reviews on their own will and time. I understand your concern about "half-quality" reviews but if you look at my reviews I started as this really bad reviewer :P
It's just natural flow.
Allow me to nitpick:

I don't know if it might not be obvious, but us contributors are doing our best to FIX this. The mapping tutorials, the review tutorials and so on and so forth. What you're saying here is equivalent to the asian parent's ridiculous standards. What do I mean by this?
I want to be a writer, I have read over 123231312 professional works, now I have never, EVER written a Novel before. You expect me to write as good as this professional novelists on my first time? That's ridiculous and unrealistic. Megaheroes was just enthusiastic and wants to write a review of a game he really enjoyed, and it's good to promote that, the thing is, like I said, this takes time to flourish. YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER that these people aren't the same age range as we are.

Not everyone thinks the same way even when they reach "adulthood" This is like in the work force, you can see past it but the other employer might not. so on and so forth.

We talk about the review submissions and we're more lenient because it's unreasonable to have super high expectations. BUT THAT IS WHAT THE COMMUNITY IS FOR. We have to show these people the right way, the correct way to WRITE reviews. Be more engaged in conversations and make them feel like part of the community than just go database wiring I DON'T KNOW but I hope you're seeing my point here.
why does everything have to be you must do it solo EVEN IN THE LEARNING PROCESS where it's supposed to be fun. :|
A lot of the points addressed in this thread are being considered, weighed, and will play a role in how we will shape the site for 2012 and beyond come January. Nessy has just reflected what both myself and others have been discussing, and we agree with a lot of her points.
Ok, just one last thing. It pains me lots (Not really. I can understand) that whenever I argue about these things people paint me like some kind of elitist SoB or something. - What gave you the impression that I have "asian parent's ridiculous standards" or "unreasonable super high expectations"? I don't want people to be the best reviewer on this site from their very first attempt or else I want them out of the house! I just want them to try a bit harder, to go an extra mile. Expecting someone to write more than a couple of sentences to describe each of a game's departments is not asking for much, not even for a kid in school, or is it?
I do think, however, that newbies should save up their "enthusiasm" for a little while, at least until they feel more confident about what they're doing, about the environment they are in, before actually taking part of it... Swimming can look like fun too, but if you plunge into the water head on without knowing what you're really up to, you'll probably just sink like a rock and drown.
@Megaheroes16: Please, don't take any of this personally. I really don't want you to feel discouraged by any of these words; this discussion just happened to take place in your review (and I'm very sorry for it) but it pertains to a much bigger problem. A problem that was already here when I arrived and one that will probably still remain after I leave. (or get kicked out xD)
Edit: @Darken: You misspelled "whambulance", silly. =P

"Call an ambulance, someone wrote a below average review!!!"
Expecting brand new people to adhere to such a specific mindset is pretty dumb. I could spin this around and go on about "getting your feet wet" due to people not wanting to try. This is an open community, the most you can expect is for everyone to read the rules and stickies, that's it. Feel free to PM every new member your thoughts though.
Okay! When Nessiah brings the complete version of this game, I'll try my best to make the review my best!
If it's such a big concern, then do like the RRR site and create a review staff. While their reviews are posted in the forums versus the main game site, no reason why it couldn't work here the same way? Basically, only the review staff would be able to post a review to any game, as long as the download still works. It would be up to the site on whether or not regular members could still post comments within the review.
That would be barring freedom of speech. Everyone should have the right to review a game they like/dislike. Specially with clashing tastes.
Agreed. Pretty much all the power would be focused on one group of people, and let's face it, most people would only download a game that has a good review and high rating. I used to...
author=Fallen-Grieverauthor=Archeia_NessiahBad "reviews" belong in the comments. Just because you have an opinion doesn't mean you have the talent required to convey that opinion in a meaningful way.

Please. Also I saw way worse ones with l33t speak, 1/2 paragraph liners of reviews, I can go on. This isn't as "BAD" as those. Maybe our standards lowered after seeing a lot of those kind of reviews. I don't know, but it's getting annoying as how you just keep saying "bad" when we're not a professional group of indie game makers, but hobbyists
Just so you know- Because I feel like you keep saying it's a bad review that it didn't cover the "gameplay" which is a part we can't do much about during the trial period I may add (10 items, 10 skills, 10 everything). The game's focus is different. I am actually amused and given a clear idea on how megashero thought about the characters of the story and the whole evil overlord deal. So it might be bad for you but I actually found this review helpful on my part if I'm conveying the message right or wrong and all those sort of stuff. It's a small thing but whatever.
It's like my review for Beautiful Escape Dungeooner. Might as well call that as a bad review too since instead of me saying anything much about the gameplay, I focused on the game's story and the message and my character interpretations of Calunio's psychological game. Not everyone reviews the same way. And I'm glad Calunio liked the review and found a different perspective for his game.
I guess this is where what's a review logic comes in :V
I found reviews something for developers to base on what to improve etc. I didn't find the reviews FOR RMN to be targetted on a player audience but for the developer. It might sound weird for you but I found RMN as a huge developer community anyway. So there might be a clash of beliefs here :|
I know megas could've written more something about the gameplay since I was surprised that he didn't write more aside from Basic. But I got the information that I wanted to HEAR and could help me benefit in the future. It's not THE BEST/GOOD whatever. It just left me with the impression, this is OK and I'm glad I know what the player thinks.
This is no competition and nobody is even rating these reviews as such. We're an open community striving for people to improve. It's as Darken says as getting your feet wet. Get some frigging experience. Etc. Not everyone is like you who didn't write a review as "bad" as this is. Stop it. Seriously.
You could say the new administration is aiming to nurture talent than have high standards for everything. Reviews can always be edited and improved on by the writer as long as the comments lead the writer to the right direction. Not to tell them to fuck off.
Thank you and I'm glad you didn't give up or even get demotivated :)

This part is because your latest posts in some reviews that we did notice. "This is a bad review fuck off" when you don't even want to do anything about it. Yes, we get the fact that we know you think it's a bad review (like the one in PB etc.) but you don't tell WHY which adds more fuel to the fire and annoying since you're expecting good reviews. Your comments themselves make it look like bad reviews for reviews I don't know. It's nothing constructive but instead you're being destructive instead of helping fix the problem.
I don't mean to force you to write a review tutorial, but just going fuck off at everyone is just not good to anyone's eyes and you're also annoying the developers themselves. I believe I'm not the only one who feels this way. Maybe you don't think that your reviews are that good for tutorials, but if that's so then what gives you the right to tell people who are still trying-- to fuck off?
As for Solitayre, nobody wants to be dramatized in some way for writing a good review. It even reached to the point of receiving angry Private Messages and I won't be surprised if he also got a statement of please don't ever review my game, since one of our members also got this. I totally understand why he left because drama isn't worth it.

it's because I think it's ridiculous that drivel is treated with the same regard and weight as good reviews
