Gensokyo...a land full of long forgotten creatures and magic. Many a day has gone peacefully in this land separated from the outside world, until one day a mystical artifact known as the Pandora's Box arrives and begins to wreck havoc across the land. If not stopped, then all shall be returned to nothingness. Join Reimu and her friends on a quest to defeat the entities of the Pandora's Box and save their beloved land from the forces of chaos!

This game follows a style similarly to the Final Fantasy series, incorporating a vast amount of abilities, monsters, and ideas from the Final Fantasy universe, while still retaining the Touhou nature of the main series. Various aspects of the Final Fantasy series incorporated into the game includes the Blue Magic system, Gil Toss, Scan, Steal, and Chakra in-battle, a Skill System similar to that found in Final Fantasy II, and the characters playing roles similar to various classes in the Final Fantasy series such as the Black Mage and Knight. However, this game also incorporates ideas from various other series, including Legend of Zelda, Valkyrie Profile, and Super Mario RPG. Players can control up to 4 characters at a time in any given battle, but can have access to as many as 30 playable characters, several of which are optional.

Final Update!!

Howdy all! So, it's been a good long while since I last posted, but at long last, I do believe the game is now finished! 99.99% done, at least, there's still a couple things that I haven't been ABLE to do (still looking for a spriter for a character), and there might still be bugs and glitches here and there, but overall, the game is actually done after nearly 12 years in the works!

Main file: https://rpgmaker.net/games/3758/downloads/10309/
Music: https://rpgmaker.net/games/3758/downloads/10310/

As usual, anyone that is willing to testrun the game for bugs and glitches, feedback, etc. would be highly welcomed! But for now, I will consider the game "DONE". Which...in a way, kinda makes me both very happy and very sad...I don't know how to feel overall.

I think you forgot to remove some messages. The forest to the west of the hakurei shrine saws that it is under construction and the skill books to the right in the human village says the same thing. Also there apears to be a fairy inside a wall in the scarlet mainsion, second floor right hall. Is there a secret wall there or did you it there by accident? Also there is a weird character standing in the bottom left of the shrine when you start the game. Is it supposed to be there? It looks like a character that waiting for a trigger in a cutscene.
I may have forgotten some of those messages, aye. The skillbooks should say unavailable though if you don't have that party member at all (i.e. if you don't have Marisa, then you won't be able to buy anything for her). As for that fairy, that was left in as a gag of sorts, and it's worked to confuse players quite well~

And what character? Can you screenshot it for me? Because if it's the same character that I'm thinking it is...then she shouldn't be there at all!
It's done. So far this game reminds me alot of laxius force. Really strong equipment with really neat effects instead of just raw power. Usefull items hidden in plain sight and long detours that give you nothing at all, like that path at the end of the lake.

I always liked that and it's nice to see someone making moire games like it. I just hope that you avoided the unfair nonsense that game also got up to. Like making an enemy way faster than you that also had a random chance of insta-killing your entire party or hiding a secret party member by making you search for a single item in a large forest surrounded by identical items and combining it with a really easily permenately missed item.

Basically this looks like a way more refined version of a game that I really liked back in the day. Good job, we really see where your passion came through. It is far preferable to have a rough game made with passion than it is to have a pollised game made without it.

Good luck in your future endeavers.

Much obliged. It may take a bit to polish this behemoth up seeing as there's so much to it (and I haven't even done one last testrun on the final set of stuff...but most of it is optional bosses anyways so...), so hopefully people will help with finding the bugs (like Sweetd1 did up there. I still have to update those but those aren't SUPER broken bugs at least...^^; ). I'd LIKE to make another game for sure, but an original one, meaning not reusing assets from existing games and whatnot, which...well, I don't think I'll be able to do that at all sadly. T-T
Planning on writing a review when I finish, but since I'm not sure how long that will take I will share some of my thoughts so far - I just got to tengu village and am going to spend out some time grinding out money to update my scrolls.

1. Characters - Are really fun. You get to play a lot of them, all of their skills and secondary skills feel unique. The plot does a good job of introducing most of them and making you try them out. Normal physical attacks feel pretty useless a lot of the time, though it looks like a few characters (such as meiling, nitori)seem to have a much better hit rate - Sakuya for example looked like she would be a strong attacker but was having a hard time connecting.
2. The skill scroll upgrade system is fun, I think it works.
3. Equipment is sparse, but distinctive, with powerful effects that nonetheless force strategic trade-offs. Some of the effects are hard to understand - I would have liked it if the 'game info' NPC described some of the them.
4. Difficulty - Regular battles can easily wipe your party. When powerful skills fail to finish off a strong enemy (because of built-in miss rates), it can be punishing. Enemies have a fairly diverse range of skills, and tend to have useful/valuable items to drop or steal. There is sometimes some pretty good loot hidden around field maps but I'm reluctant to fully explore (non-obvious spots) due to high encounter rates - *but I have discovered the method that helps address this later*
5. Economy - Enemies don't drop a lot of gold, and field restoratives (mostly for mp) are expensive. Selling items they drop or have stolen tends to pay a lot better. Merchants and save points are rarely too far. Efficient grinding requires some planning (and investing in spell scrolls) - similarly, it may be prudent to run from enemies a lot in certain areas.
6. Main Storyline - It's easy to get confused about where to go at certain points in the plot. Sometimes a storyline event will reference multiple locations, when you are NOT supposed to visit there (until later) or assume player knowledge the player may not know (I did not realize one character I was supposed to look for was in the human village until I googled it). It would also be nice to review secondary skill mechanics/effects later - as sometime it happens between other events.
7. Side-quests: There seems to be a reasonable amount. I always like running into strong enemies on the world map that I know I won't be able to beat until later. The distribution of dolls seems a bit uneven as after finding 10 or so I have not really seen them since. I'm hoping I can figure out what's going on with the music sheets myself when I fight my way back into the mansion, I kept trying to start this quest earlier, not realizing that I was wasting my time until I got Marisa back. The item conversion / crafting system from Nitori is also a little confusing - I am assuming it will make more sense later.
8. Glitches: Mapping could be improved in a few areas, making some dungeons easier to navigate. It is possible to bypass triggers for important scripted events (such as in the Haunted Forest). I've noticed some other minor glitches and possible bugs that have not had much of an impact on gameplay, including variable walking speed. My current suspected bug: the armor that Marisa receives after traveling through a cave/tunnel and visiting a secret location does not seem to be equip-able by her, but i am not sure if any other characters may be able to wear it.

Overall I am enjoying the game and how it has been designed. I'm sure I will have more questions for you as I continue playing.
@ogswan:

1) Glad you like the characters! There's a lot of em, and making sure they all get introduced SOMEHOW was a challenge, especially with those that don't have much of an introduction to begin with in Touhou canon, like Momiji. Though some fall REAL short in that category...
2) Oh trust me, while it's not BAD, it WILL get annoying due to how you have to use each book individually to learn the next level. I wish I could think of a better method of updating that but...there isn't really a good way of handling it I think...
3) That was a thing I wanted to do was to make all of the equipment be useful, not just be straight upgrades over one another (though some are generally better than others obviously). It...wasn't easy, mind you. @_@;
4) Fun fact: Due to how big maps USED to be (trust me, some maps were far larger than they are now), I tried to set a specific encounter rate. I chose 80 (meaning 1 fight roughly every 80 steps), AND on top of that, I added a 10 step No Encounter coding so that after battles you wouldn't get into a step within 10 steps. Still...it can be a bit high even with all of that.
5) Yeah, the items that you can sell make up for that, even moreso now that the main crafting system was outright removed (excluding Nitori's skills, which require specific items). That's really the best method of doing so, and also kinda encourages exploring your options on what enemies/areas are best for getting money and the like, I think.
6) Early-game story (as in first 50%) is one of the things I WISH I could go back and redo. Sadly, that would take a loooong time to fix the story up the way I would like, and in the end, I just decided to let it go. Don't want to spend another 5 years updating the game more, ya know? Gotta let it run its course. T-T

As for the secondary skills (and overworld abilities, which the game doesn't mention that often), I was going to actually add that in the form of Suzunaan (which would've been the tutorial area), but again, that would've taken a lot of time to do so (all the data for the characters ARE actually in the ReadMe. Of course, that has spoilers because it contains all the playable characters and whatnot, but it IS there if you don't mind spoilers.
7) I tried to add what I could, though figuring out what's the "right" amount was difficult. They're more rewarding too since they tend to drop special things oftentimes. The dolls...well, after the initial 6 or so, they start becoming more and more sparse. I AM thinking I should move them to more...secret areas or something since I'm pretty sure that 10 dolls can give you some really REALLY good stuff? I forget what you can get for 10 of them.
8) The triggers in Forest of Magic can be bypassed?? How so, I could've sworn I covered all of those spots. o_O

As for walking speed, that's Sakuya's overworld passive that increases it if she's in the party. If she's NOT in the party and you're getting that issue, then...I don't know WHAT'S going on as I could've sworn I fixed that in all areas of the game. >_<

Do you know the name of the armor? It might not be for Marisa at all.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

when people complain that a battle every 80 steps is a high encounter rate. smh
the item was diviner's robe, which i now see is equipable by sanae (though its a downgrade vs her default armor so i am assuming it has some secret power to make up for it)

i did not even realize you had a folder full of readmes, that is great! answers pretty much all of my questions about the skills, statuses i did not understand

i did not realize there were so many different overworld abilities either

the speed is bugged for sure, but i am happy to have faster default speed - when i put sakuya in my party i go into overdrive and its almost too fast :) i did see the npc in tengu mountain to fix it though

for doll rewards - the sneaking suit reward is pretty nice, not broken, but very nice to steal more often - i just checked the doc and see you get that at 6 dolls, and i see there is a very nice prize at 12 for meiling
Yeah, the statuses I could probably update the document for that. It just got so troublesome to update documents and the like, I never got around to it. ^^;;

Hm...do you recall where it got bugged at all?? And didn't realize I still had a NPC around that fixed the issue, huh...thought they were all gone.
i got the bug shortly after getting sakuya and using the HRCS item

the NPC is you!! at the base of Tengu mountain - and gives the option to change to multiple speeds, including turbo
Yeah, I remember that. I could've sworn I tossed all of those though. Ah well, at least one is around, but it was a debug thing. Still...weird that it did that there...
I just realized that I missed the Yin-Yang Orb early on, is there any way to not make it permanetly missable?
I think that's the only permanently missable piece of equipment in the game (bar an accessory but that one's a special case). There's no way to get it again once you've already bypassed it.
I guess we won't be seeing a patch that makes it apear in the ruined hakurei shrine, huh.

Looking into your area list, it looks like some missed equipment can show up in kourindou. Is there any way to make the orb appear there?
Updated to have that fixed up. It honestly SHOULD have been in the shrine, hidden behind the shrine, but I guess I never put it there after all. It'll be there now if you missed it. I had to do an update patch ANYWAYS because of some other issues later in the game with getting out of a boss fight and having an empty party (!?) due to me forgetting some lines of code. That won't be for a while on your end I think, but yeah...that's a thing I forgot! Oops!
Thanks alot. It's really nice to see someone so quick to respond to the community.
I mean, if there's a problem and I'm capable of fixing it, no sense in dawdling on fixing it, ESPECIALLY if it's a really REALLY big problem like empty parties or instant game overs after unwinnable boss fights (which has happened...). That speed bug eludes me though, I'm not sure WHY that's happening at all...
One more thing, the hunter's knife that's sold in the Mansion, It is supposed to be equipable by everyone? I though knives were sakuya's thing? Well I just gave mine to meiling and made her super fast, although I could give it to cirno since her cold aura offers no stat boost whatsoever.
Yes, that's equippable by everyone, but meant to be pretty expensive due to the big Speed boost (that and it offers literally nothing BUT the speed boost, so you're basically losing out on special bonuses from most weapons. Unless you're Cirno, where that doesn't matter as much). It was originally a crafting item is why (you'll see some crafting items CAN be equipped like that, so be careful of when you sell things~).

Also a thing that I need to probably note somewhere is how dual-wielders work. The weapon in the character's FIRST SLOT will be the one that gives the effects. If it's in the SECOND slot (normally the Shield slot), then it won't kick in due to how the engine handles equipment. Or at least I think it won't handle it right??? I'm...not 100% sure even after working with the engine as long as I have how it wants to handle things.
