Suzy and freedom is a short adventure game made for RMN’s 2013 All Hallows’ Eve Event. Theme: Non-fiction horror. It is inspired by a real life crime that happened in Brazil.

On October 31st 2002, a couple was found dead in their bed. What first appeared to be a burglary followed by murder left too many unusual traces, and the police soon figured that whoever did it was probably someone familiar with that house. Less than a week of investigation revealed that the murder was planned by the couple’s own daughter, with the help of her boyfriend and his brother.

The game tries to reenact this story from the perspective of various characters involved. Each scene is focused on a different character, and uses a different style of gameplay to represent his motivations and goals.

Suzy and freedom is NOT, however, an attempt to recreate the original story in a completely faithful and exact fashion.

Dropping a few updates on the game, if anyone is interested!

The game has been translated to Korean by a guy that goes by "casw". I don't know any Korean, and I have no idea if it's a good translation, but the game looks pretty neat with Korean characters!

It was also listed as part of IndieGames.com Top 10 indie horror games of 2013. That was pretty amazing!

I'm keeping track of pieces and reviews regarding Suzy and freedom in the "Outer walls" tab, right at the top of this page.

If you like Suzy and freedom and you think it deserves it, don't forget to give it a Misao nomination!

It was also translated to Spanish!

Haha, I think that's very true. I honestly skipped the street fight scene so I could get on with the story. As soon as this came out, I was pretty interested in knowing what really happened. And I didn't mean to be too critical about the puzzles; I just felt like they distracted the player from what was really important: the story.

I tried to make puzzles that would engage, not just distract. Even with the partially negative feedback I'm getting for the puzzles, I'm still convinced that the game is a lot better with them than becoming a non-interactive visual novel. If I want the player to feel like he's in the characters' shoes, he's gotta act, not just watch.

The sad part is that, even though you can skip minigames to the next scenes, that will also make you skip important parts of the story (that happen right after the minigames).

So I finally got off my huge ass and finally got around to playing the game – and even submitted a pending review for it. Overall, I quite immensely enjoyed it. I came into this game not knowing much about the actual crime and story behind it. But after finishing the game, I wanted to find out more about it; it was so interesting and intriguing. You did a masterful job in not only completing this game in a limited matter of time but handling something like this with the utmost of class. Even though some of the puzzles really didn’t do much to enhance the overall experience (although I do love the “find love” puzzles the most), I still thought they were implemented very well. Kudos, calunio.

(BTW, I wonder what the real Suzane Louise von Richthofen would say about this game? Maybe if she gets out of prison earlier, maybe you should guys should hook up, lol.)
Alright! Another calunio game! Let's give it a whirl!

You can't download or you can't run the downloaded file?
I just tested the download, works fine here.
If you can't extract the file, maybe you don't have winrar?
I just finished the game. It's quite a little experience! One of the most fascinating RPG Maker games I've ever played. Very well done. It also got me extremely curious about the incident it's based on. I love games that can inspire people to learn about something.
Wow. Great use of gameplay to complement the story. The don't die part was very disturbing.
Only criticism I have is that the fight scene was... unresponsive? I don't know, it didn't seem to work very well. I really liked the platform puzzles, though. Tricky, but fun.
The fighting sequence mechanism was strange because there was no actual collision detection other than RM2k3 default's. It just works on collision with hero: if the hero is attacking when it collides, you attack; if not, enemy attacks. The problem is that the engine's interpretation of "collision" is weird. :/
But it's not really that hard, you just have to hit the enemy a little before he touches you.
Juuuuuuuuuuuuuust finished playing, on the big screen, and I oughta say that you're a constant rampage of win over yourself, Calunio
I'm completely dazzled
This game is absolutely terrific in every way possible, starting by the exquisite graphical presentation and style, I'm truly moved
And I also need to say that the telling was pretty accurate and brimming with nice little touches -- My "stepfather" was arrested at the same prison as Daniel and Cristiano, and they used to talk a lot.
This is just
Oh. My. God. <3

That's very nice to hear ^_^
Especially the part you said it was accurate, because that's something I was actually aiming for.
Weren't the minigames too hard for you?
For those of you who are interested in the real story behind the game.

Suzane Von Richthofen gets the right to stay out during the day and go back to prison only to sleep (which in Brazil is called "semi-open regime"), but she refuses it.

(Google Translation below):

Suzane von Richthofen does not want to go to semi-open regime

With a legal permit to return to the semi-open regime, Suzane von Richthofen, 30, has again surprised. She refused to receive the benefit and should serve the rest of the sentence in prison in the state. Imprisoned for almost twelve years, mostly in the Women's Penitentiary Tremembé, Suzane works and has good relationship with the rest of the inmates.
On the afternoon of Monday (18th), she made a formal request to the direction of the prison stating that he wanted to stay there for feeling safe in jail. The request - a letter written by Suzane's own hands - was referred to Judge Sueli de Oliveira Zeraik Armani, the 1st Court of Criminal Executions Taubaté, which will review the case.
In semi-open regime, the prisoner goes to a center Resocialization or a penal colony. Can work on affiliated establishments with the Department of Penitentiary Administration (SAP), inside or outside the premises of the prison, but should be back to sleep in jail. With the refusal of the semi-open, Suzane also lose the right to temporary exits - she is aware of it and accepted these arrangements remain in closed conditions.

The article shows a picture of her looking pretty happy in prison.
Follow up on the real-life thing:

Suzane von Richthofen marries kidnapper in prison

The new partner's ex Elize Matsunaga, convicted of dismembering husband

Suzane von Richthofen, sentenced to 39 years and six months in prison for the murder of their parents in 2002 changed his life inside the prison Tremembé: after becoming evangelical and give up fighting for the inheritance, she married Sandra Regina Gomes, sentenced to 27 years in prison for the kidnapping of an entrepreneur from São Paulo.
She recently swapped the evangelical wing of the women's prison - where he lived until then - to occupy the special cell of married arrested with the new partner. The new couple was working in the prison garment factory along with ex Sandra, Elize Matsunaga, arrested for killing and dismembering her husband Marcos Kitano Matsunaga in June 2012. The relationship had ended due to Suzane.
The relationship is touted as one of the reason for Suzane have denied progression to the semi-open regime . In August, Judge of the Court of Criminal Executions Taubaté, Sueli de Oliveira Zeraik Armani, was granted the right to Suzanne, who declared that he would rather stay in prison.

Oh so she's a lesbian. Interesting. Perhaps you should make a sequel.

Whoa man how did I miss this. I mean seriously how did I miss this. This was clearly a crazy successful release with a bajillion exposure.

This subject matter is 100% relevant to my interests. My longstanding horror franchise plays around with very similar material.

I am totally downloading this. Unless the execution was 100% fail, it should easily be my favorite calunio game.
